Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wins PFWA’s 2022 MVP Award

The PFWA has announced that #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has received their MVP Award for the 2022 NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has been honored by the Pro Football Writers of America, becoming the 49th player to win their MVP Award. The PFWA on-field awards are recognized equally with the Associated Press and Sporting News by the NFL, though the AP MVP Award is the one that everyone awaits at the NFL Honors ceremony in February.

This is the second time that Mahomes has won the PFWA MVP Award during the course of his professional career. Mahomes is now the eighth player in NFL history with multiple PFWA MVP Awards under his belt. He also became the 10th consecutive and 33rd quarterback to win the PFWA’s MVP Award.

Here’s a look at what the PFWA had to say about Mahomes and his 2022 campaign in their press release:

“Mahomes, in his sixth NFL season, started all 17 games, completed 435 of 648 passes for a league-leading 5,250 yards with an NFL-best 41 touchdowns and a 105.2 passer rating (second in the NFL). He rushed 61 times for 358 yards and four touchdowns, and he also caught one pass for six yards. Combined, Mahomes accounted for an NFL-record 5,614 total offense yards. He threw for 300 or more yards a Chiefs-record 10 times, including a season-high 446 yards against Tennessee in Week 9. He led the league in completions of 20+ yards (73) and 40+ yards (13). Mahomes was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Weeks 1 and 4 and the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for November. He was selected to the FPWA’s 2022 All-NFL and All-AFC teams.”

When Mahomes won his first PFWA MVP Award in 2018, he became the first Chiefs player to ever win the honor. He also went on to win the AP MVP Award that year. It’s a good indicator that he could do it again in 2022.

Chiefs DE George Karlaftis named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team

#Chiefs rookie DE George Karlaftis earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors.

The Kansas City Chiefs did a tremendous job in the 2022 NFL draft, finding contributors on both sides of the ball, both early and late in the draft. They’re now being recognized for one of their two first-round draft picks.

Chiefs rookie DE George Karlaftis is one of two defensive ends selected for the 2022 PFWA All-Rookie Team. Karlaftis joined former No. 2 overall pick by the Lions, Michigan DE Aidan Hutchinson, as the two defensive ends selected for this year’s All-Rookie Team. Karlaftis, of course, was drafted by Kansas City at No. 30 overall.

This comes after Karlaftis managed a hot finish to the 2022 NFL season, recording six sacks in the last seven games of the year. According to PFF, Karlaftis finished the year with the second-most pressures (48) among all rookie edge rushers behind only Hutchinson. Karlaftis also led all rookie defensive linemen in passes batted at the line of scrimmage (7). He ranked fifth among all rookie defensive linemen in defensive stops (21).

Last season, Chiefs C Creed Humphrey, RG Trey Smith, and LB Nick Bolton were all selected for the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Kansas City has a long-standing history of players being selected by the PFWA for the All-Rookie Team. The last year that at least one rookie wasn’t selected for the team was the 2013 NFL season — Andy Reid’s first year with the Chiefs.

Falcons’ Chris Lindstrom, Tyler Allgeier recognized by PFWA

#Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier was named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team and OL Chris Lindstrom made the All-NFC Team

The awards keep rolling in for Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom as the former first-round pick was voted onto the Professional Football Writers of America‘s 2022 All-NFC team.

Lindstrom was also selected for the Pro Bowl and named to the AP All-Pro second team for his stellar 2022 campaign.

The fourth-year lineman is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the team could look to sign him to a long-term extension this offseason. Lindstrom wasn’t the only Falcons player recognized by the PFWA, though.

Rookie running back Tyler Allgeier was named to the PFWA’s All-Rookie team, along with Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker.

Allgeier rushed for 1,035 yards on 4.9 yards per carry with three touchdowns this season. The former BYU star broke the team’s rookie rushing record and appears to be the future at the running back position. This is even more impressive when you consider Allgeier was a healthy scratch for Week 1.

While the jury is still out on the team’s 2022 NFL draft class, Allgeier has proven to be an absolute steal as a fifth-round draft pick.

Chris Olave earns PFWA All-Rookie recognition with college teammate Garrett Wilson

Saints standout Chris Olave earned PFWA All-Rookie recognition along with his college teammate Garrett Wilson:

The awards keep rolling in for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave, who was selected for the PFWA All-Rookie team after an impressive 2022 debut. And he’s joining his college teammate Garrett Wilson as the top first-year receivers on PFWA’s list. Olave is the lone Saints rookie to make the cut, however, with fellow first-year pros Trevor Penning, Alontae Taylor, and Rashid Shaheed having been limited during the season with injuries.

Those two former Ohio State Buckeyes dueled throughout the year for the league lead in rookie receiving totals, so it makes sense they would wind up here together at the end of the season. They’re both finalists for the Rookie of the Year award, too.

Here’s the full All-Rookie team from the PFWA:

Aidan Hutchinson and Malcolm Rodriguez earn PFWA All-Rookie honors

Lions defenders Aidan Hutchinson and Malcolm Rodriguez earn PFWA All-Rookie honors

The honors keep coming for the Detroit Lions rookie class of 2022. Two Detroit defensive rookies, DE Aidan Hutchinson and LB Malcolm Rodriguez, were voted onto the PFWA All-Rookie team.

Both Rodriguez and Hutchinson won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Week honors during the season. So did safety Kerby Joseph, who missed making the PFWA team over Kyle Hamilton of the Ravens and Jalen Pitre of the Texans.

Hutchinson has a great case to be defensive rookie of the year, but here he lost out to Jets CB Sauce Gardner.

The full All-Rookie team from the PFWA:

As a disclaimer, I am a PFWA voter and I voted for Hutchinson, Joseph, Rodriguez and DE James Houston from the Lions.

Daron Payne, Jeremy Reaves honored by PFWA

More accolades for Jeremy Reaves and Daron Payne.

It’s been a good two months for Washington Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves.

Not only did Reaves earn his first trip to the Pro Bowl for his outstanding work on special teams, but he was also named AP first-team All-Pro and the NFLPA’s player’s All-Pro team.

On Monday, Reaves added another as the Pro Football Writers of America named Reaves to its All-NFL team as the special-team player. In addition, Reaves made the All-NFC team.

Joining Reaves on the PFWA All-NFC team is defensive tackle Daron Payne.

The 2018 first-round pick from Alabama enjoyed a breakout season in 2022, just as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. Payne tied the legendary Dave Butz for the franchise single-season record for sacks by an interior defensive lineman.

Payne also established new career highs in tackles [64] and tackles for loss [18]. Payne was fourth in the NFL in TFLs.

Congratulations to Reaves and Payne on the well-deserved honors.

Chiefs players lead the way in PFWA All-NFL, All-AFC teams

The #Chiefs had the most players selected to PFWA’s All-AFC team and tied for the most selected to their All-NFL team.

The Pro Football Writers of America have revealed the first of their annual on-field awards. Accredited writers covering all 32 NFL teams have voted on the PFWA’s All-NFL, All-AFC and All-NFC Teams following the conclusion of the 2022 NFL regular season.

A total of four Kansas City Chiefs players made the All-NFL team, which is tied with the San Francisco 49ers for the most by a single team. This comes a season after they had no players make the All-NFL team. They were also well-represented on the All-AFC team, with a total of six players selected, the most by any single AFC team.

Here’s a look at the players who landed on each All-Pro team:

Kalif Raymond earns PFWA All-NFC nod as punt returner

Raymond was the only NFC player to return a punt for a touchdown all season

The Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) released the voting results for the All-NFL and All-Conference teams.

No Lions players made All-NFL, as was the case with the Associated Press voting earlier this month. One Detroit player did earn first-team All-NFC honors: punt returner Kalif Raymond.

Raymond was buoyed by his early touchdown return against the New York Jets. He was the only NFC player to return a punt for a touchdown all season, and his 13.2 yards per return was the most of any player with at least 20 return attempts.

The full All-NFC team:

In the spirit of disclosure, I am a PFWA voter and I did vote for Raymond.

Patrick Peterson name Korey Stringer Good Guy Award recipient

Peterson has been tremendous all year

Each local chapter of the Pro Football Writers Association awards a good guy award to one player from the team they cover. The Minnesota Vikings have theirs named after former right tackle Korey Stringer.

On Friday, the PFWA branch of Minnesota awarded cornerback Patrick Peterson the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award.

The Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling described Peterson as “cooperative, candid and insightful with reporters every week, offering valuable insight on the defense and the state of the team.” That isn’t always the case with players and the media, and

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert covered Stringer during his time with the Vikings and uses some of the things that made him special in how he votes for the award.

Peterson joins Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook as past winners.

Lions PR team nominated for the Pete Rozelle Award from the PFWA

The Detroit Lions PR team is nominated for the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Writers of America

Congratulations are in order for the Detroit Lions public relations and media relations staff. The Lions group, headed by director of football communications Eamonn Reynolds, is one of the nominees for the Pete Rozelle Award from the Pro Football Writers of America, or PFWA.

The Rozelle award is voted on by media members. As a disclaimer, I am a voting member and did cast my ballot for the Lions crew. They deserve it. Managing media spread out all over the country and numerous requests for interviews and information has not been an easy job during the pandemic, but the Lions staff did a fantastic job.

From the press release announcing the honors,

Detroit Lions — The Lions’ PR team, led by Eamonn Reynolds, received multiple nominations for the proactive way they worked to provide access to new head coach Dan Campbell and new general manager Brad Holmes in 2021. The Lions facilitated one-on-one interviews and were receptive to unique story angles during a difficult season on the field.

The Ravens, Broncos, Commanders and Patriots staffs are the other nominees. The winner will be announced after the 2022 NFL draft.
