Broncos OLB Jonah Elliss had shoulder surgery; made All-Rookie team

Broncos OLB Jonah Elliss underwent shoulder surgery after making the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team in 2024.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonah Elliss underwent should surgery last week, his father, Luther Elliss, confirmed to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette previously broke the news about Elliss suffering a fractured scapula bone in the team’s playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills. At the time of the initial report, it was not yet known if the pass rusher would undergo surgery.

Elliss (6-2, 246 pounds) eventually did undergo surgery, putting his status in doubt for the team’s offseason program this spring.

The Broncos picked Elliss in the third round of last year’s NFL draft out of Utah. He served as a rotational outside linebacker in his rookie season, totaling 38 tackles, six quarterback hits, five sacks and two pass breakups in 17 games (playing 38% of the defensive snaps).

Following his impressive season, Elliss made the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team. He was Denver’s only player to take home that honor following the 2024 season.

Ben Johnson named PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year

Former Lions OC Ben Johnson named PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year

The awards and honors keep coming for now-former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, now the head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Johnson oversaw the league’s No. 2-ranked offense in 2024, averaging over 400 yards of offense per game and helping the Lions reach 15 wins for the first time in franchise history. As a result, Johnson was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

From the PFWA press release:

Johnson completed his sixth season with the Lions, and his third as offensive coordinator in 2024. This season, Johnson oversaw one of the most prolific offensive attacks in the league as Detroit set franchise marks in most points scored (564; fourth-most in NFL history), touchdowns (70; tied for fourth in NFL history), first downs (410; fifth in NFL history) and total net yards (6,962). The Lions led the NFL in points, points per game (33.2), touchdowns, first downs, were second in both total offense per game (409.5) and passing offense per game (263.2) and tied for second in rushing TDs (29). Detroit had 10 30-point games, six of which produced 40 or more points and two surpassed the 50-point threshold. The Lions also led the league in point differential at +222. The Lions joined the 2000 St. Louis Rams as the only teams with at least 35 passing touchdowns (38) and 25 rushing TDs (26). The balanced attack saw seven different players producing a game with multiple touchdowns, and five players scored at least seven TDs – which tied an NFL mark.

Johnson is the first Lions assistant to receive the PFWA award established in 1993. He was named the Chicago Bears head coach on January 21.

Johnson joined executive vice president and general manager Brad Holmes as award winners from the PFWA. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell beat out Dan Campbell for Coach of the Year honors.

Johnson is also one of five finalists, along with former defensive coordinator and now Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, for AP Assistant Coach of the Year, which will be announced February 6.

Taliese Fuaga snubbed of an PFWA All-Rookie Team appearance

New Orleans Saints left tackle Taliese Fuaga was snubbed from the PFWA 2024 All-Rookie team in favor of two right tackles:

The Professional Football Writers of America completed their yearly All-Rookie teams and awards recently, and with that, we got to see who they believed were the best first-year players at each position. The New Orleans Saints did not particularly have many candidates as most of their rookies either got less than a full season of playing time or none at all, however, Taliese Fuaga and Kool-Aid McKinstry broke that mold.

Considering McKinstry played in 14 of the 17 games, it is hard to make an argument for him despite having a very solid season. His development was rapid and as he got thrown into the fire, he was able to become one of the more solid pieces from a Saints rookie class we had seen in awhile.

Taliese Fuaga on the other hand did play in all 17 games, starting every single one, and in that time frame played in 1,071 snaps (98%). His season was not perfect, allowing 6 sacks and 39 pressures which is good for a 96.3% blocking efficiency rate. In addition he had 10 penalties spread out pretty evenly across the season.

In comparison to Joe Alt and Roger Rosengarten he was relatively similar statistically, however you also have to factor in the fact that for most of the season, Fuaga played without multiple of the other starters along the line. Erik McCoy missed most of the year, Lucas Patrick missed time mid-season, as did Cesar Ruiz. The only one who didn’t miss time was Trevor Penning, who was on the complete opposite side and could not particularly help the rookie in blocking the left side.

Comparatively, Rosengarten had Ronnie Stanley for the full season across from him as a mentor, Daniel Faalele right next to him at guard all season who had an absolutely outstanding year (1 sack allowed, 33 pressures allowed, 6 penalties), Tyler Linderbaum every game at center who was even better (0 sacks allowed, 19 pressures allowed, 10 penalties) and Patrick Mekari at the opposite guard spot who despite substantial penalties (12) only gave up 1 sack and 32 pressures.

As for Joe Alt? He had Pro Bowl right tackle Rashawn Slater for 15 games and a quality season from center Bradley Bozeman (4 sacks allowed, 30 pressures allowed, 4 penalties). Credit where it is due though, both guards on his team struggled immensely, and he picked up the slack on the right side with Trey Pipkens.

The talent around you as a rookie can make or break your season, as having quality players taking some of the pressure off of you can make learning the game and processing the defense a little bit easier. Fuaga had little to none of that, which is what makes his rookie season so impressive, as much of the time he was out there with the second and third stringers, or even practice squad players at many points.

With that said, here is the full PWFA All-Rookie team selections for each position:

Ravens’ right tackle Roger Rosengarten named to PFWA All-Rookie team

Ravens’ right tackle Roger Rosengarten named to PFWA All-Rookie team

Roger Rosengarten saw elite pass rushers from Day 1 when he joined the Ravens, but the former Washington Huskies offensive tackle improved, battled, and finished the year as one of the best players on a solid offensive line.

Rosengarten was the ninth tackle selected in last April’s NFL draft, and on Tuesday, he earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team.

Rosengarten and No. 5-overall pick Joe Alt of the Los Angeles Chargers were the all-rookie offensive tackles.

After alternating snaps in the first three weeks, Rosengarten took over as the Ravens’ starting right tackle in Week 4 and never looked back, starting 16 games (including the playoffs).

Among offensive tackles who played at least 50% of the snaps, Rosengarten ranked No. 39 at his position, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). He was credited with four sacks allowed in 488 pass-blocking snaps.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels captures his first Rookie of the Year award

The first of many awards for Jayden Daniels.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has picked up his first postseason awards, and he isn’t even done playing. The Pro Football Writers Association of America named Daniels the 2024 Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year.

In the regular season, Daniels completed 69% of his passes for 3,568 yards, with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Daniels also broke the NFL rookie rushing record by a quarterback with 891 yards and six touchdowns. Daniels also rushed for 55 first downs.

The No. 2 overall pick from the 2024 NFL draft led Washington to a 12-5 record — the franchise’s best record since 1991. Daniels also led the Commanders to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, their first playoff win since 2005, and their first NFC championship game appearance since 1991.

Daniels has led Washington to road playoff wins over No. 3 Tampa Bay and No. 1 Detroit and will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in the NFC championship game.

Daniels is the second player in Washington’s franchise history to win the Rookie of the Year award, joining Mike Thomas, who won in 1975. He’s also the second Washington player to win the PFWA Offensive Rookie of the Year award, joining Robert Griffin III, who won in 2012.

Eagles have two players make the PFWA 2024 All-Rookie Team

Eagles cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell make the PFWA 2024 All-Rookie Team

The Eagles added cornerbacks with their first two draft picks in last April’s selection process and it was a significant reason for the dramatic turnaround on defense.

The Pro Football Writers of America revealed their 2024 All-Rookie team and Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell were the first team cornerbacks.

Mitchell ranked 3rd among NFL CBs with 16 forced incompletions, trailing only Zyon McCollum (17) and Denzel Ward (17). He was 3rd among CBs in yards allowed per coverage snap (0.8), behind Pat
Surtain (0.6) and Derek Stingley (0.7) (min. 600 coverage snaps).

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, who broke the NFL rookie quarterback single season rushing record in leading the Commanders to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, was named 2024 Rookie of the Year and the Offensive Rookie of the Year, chosen in voting conducted by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA).

Rams linebacker Jared Verse, who led NFL rookies in quarterback hits, pressures and hurries, is the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo wins PFWA’s 2024 Paul ‘Dr. Z’ Zimmerman Award

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo won the PFWA’s 2024 Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award. | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been honored by the Pro Football Writers of America, becoming the 25th assistant coach to win their Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman.

The Dr. Z Award is given for lifetime achievement as an NFL assistant coach. Spagnuolo shares the award with Tennessee Titans offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

Here’s a look at what the PFWA had to say about Spagnuolo and his career in their press release:

Spagnuolo completed his fifth season as the Chiefs defensive coordinator and 24th in the NFL in 2023. He has coordinated four Super Bowl champion teams, and he is the only coordinator in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises (N.Y. Giants 2007; Kansas City 2019, 2022, 2023). His 2023 defensive unit ranked second in both points and yards allowed and held San Francisco’s offense down late in the Chiefs’ OT victory in Super Bowl LVIII. He was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants (2015-17) and the Giants’ interim head coach for the final four weeks of the 2017 season. Spagnuolo began his NFL career with Philadelphia (1999-2006), followed by stints with the Giants (2007-08), St. Louis Rams (2009-11), New Orleans (2012) and Baltimore (2013-14) before returning to the Giants.

The Chiefs defense has emerged as one of the best units in the league since Spagnuolo was hired in 2019. He hopes to accomplish another milestone in 2024 as the Chiefs seek to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls.

Brad Holmes wins Executive of the Year from PFWA

Holmes is the first Lions exec to ever win the PFWA award

The latest set of awards for the 2023 NFL season from the Pro Football Writers of America are now out, and the Lions brought a big one home. Detroit GM Brad Holmes won the PFWA voting for NFL Executive of the Year.

Holmes earned the award for guiding the Lions to the team’s first NFC North title and the most road victories in a season, as well as the most wins by 10 or more points in any season in Detroit history. He is the first Lions exec to win the honor since its creation in 1993.

Head coach Dan Campbell was a prime candidate to win the Coach of the Year honor, but that instead went to Texans rookie head coach Demeco Ryans. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson lost out on the Assistant Coach of the Year to Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.
