PFF College ranks the top WR prospects since 2020

Four of the top seven WR prospects since 2020 are former members of the Crimson Tide.

Over the past few years, we have seen football shift much more toward an offensive style. No positional group has benefitted more from the adjustments than the wide receivers.

The receiver position has become such a crucial commodity in the NFL that teams are drafting receivers earlier than ever before. There have been some outstanding young receivers in the NFL draft since 2020 and PFF College ranks some of the best.

Four of the top seven receiver prospects since 2020 have come from the Alabama Crimson Tide (DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Jameson Williams and Jerry Jeudy).

Who will be the next great Crimson Tide receiver? Malik Benson? Isaiah Bond? The upcoming 2023 college football season will let us know.

Updated NFL mock draft has Will Anderson nearly slipping out of top five

Bryce Young and Will Anderson both mocked as top five picks prior to 2023 NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft class has been headlined by four very intriguing quarterback prospects, but Will Anderson Jr. of the Alabama Crimson Tide might be one of the best defensive players to enter the draft in recent years.

Heading into the 2022 college football season, many thought that Anderson would wind up being the first pick in this draft, but the positional need for a quarterback is just too strong this year.

In an updated NFL mock draft by PFF College, Bryce Young will be the second quarterback off the board to the Houston Texans as the Carolina Panthers select C.J. Stroud first overall. Houston would be an outstanding fit for Young as they have a very manageable division and a solid foundation.

Things get interesting later though as the Detroit Lions trade up to No. 3 to land Florida’s Anthony Richardson, another QB off the board. Surprisingly, this mock has the Colts taking a defensive back at No. 4 which allows Anderson to slide to the Seattle Seahawks at pick No. 5. The Seahawks have had some of the strongest defenses in the NFL over the past decade, so this would be a great spot for the Nagurski Trophy winner to end up.

LOOK: Trio of Alabama players land in PFF College’s top 10 prospects ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Three former Alabama stars land inside the top 10 of PFF College’s 2023 NFL draft big board.

As January quickly begins to fade and the Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs and Bengals have reached the NFL’s conference championships, it is a reminder that the football season is almost over and then we will quickly move into NFL draft mode.

Although Alabama’s football season did not end with a championship, plenty of star power from Tuscaloosa is still heading into the 2023 NFL draft.

Recently, PFF College released its updated list of the top 10 prospects in this year’s draft, and three former members of the Crimson Tide landed on the list.

Quarterback [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] landed in the top spot while outside linebacker [autotag]Will Anderson Jr.[/autotag] came in at No. 4, and safety prospect [autotag]Brian Branch[/autotag] rounded out the list at No. 10.

Jardin Gilbert selected to PFF College defensive team of the week

Jardin Gilbert selected to PFF College defensive team of the week

Sophomore defensive back (safety), Jardin Gilbert, was selected to the Week 6 PFF College Defensive Team of the Week following the Aggies’ 24-20 defeat at, now, No. 3 Alabama (No. 1 in the AFCA Coaches Poll).

Throughout the Aggies’ gutsy effort – fueled by four takeaways, two Crimson Tide missed field goals, and a tough performance by Haynes King – Gilbert totaled a career-high 9 tackles (7 solo), one tackle for loss, one pass defense and a second quarter interception of Jalen Milroe. Gilbert’s interception was the Aggies’ third take-away of the night and took place on the ensuing drive after the Aggies knotted up the score 14-14. The many Crimson Tide miscues gave the Aggies a shot at their second consecutive upset of, then, No. 1 Alabama on the final play, at the Alabama two-yard line, with triple zeros on the clock.

Expect more dominant performances from Gilbert moving forward.

Gilbert’s 2022 season statistics include 41 tackles (24 solo), two interceptions and three passes defended.

Is any Notre Dame quarterback on Pro Football Focus’ top 50 list?

Which quarterback would you choose?

Heading into the 2022 season, the biggest question mark for the Fighting Irish is who will be the starting quarterback. Gone from last year’s team is graduate transfer [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag], who toward the end of the year really found his stride and made the Irish offense look much more capable.

During the season, both of his backups, [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] and [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag], had considerable looks behind center. Each had bright moments. Although [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has not yet named his starter for the season opener against Ohio State, the presumption is Buchner will take the first snaps against the Buckeyes.

Although this doesn’t confirm the fact that Buchner is the most likely candidate, Pro Football Focus named its top 50 quarterbacks heading into the season and the rising sophomore was ranked 46th.

Buchner is ranked behind former Irish quarterback [autotag]Phil Jurkovec[/autotag], who transferred to Boston College, making everyone wonder what if he had stuck around for his opportunity this season. Either way, Buchner has plenty of room to rise on this list by season end. He was a top-100 prospect coming out of high school.

A big part of Notre Dame’s season will hinge on his play, or potentially Pyne’s or even true freshman [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag], depending on injuries and effectiveness. The most important position in football, and arguably all of sports, will need to step up for the Irish this fall.

Where are Bresee, Murphy ranked on this 2023 Big Board?

Pro Football Focus this week released its first 2023 PFF Big Board, ranking some of the best players in college football who figure to be top prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Two Clemson defensive linemen are ranked among the top 10 players on PFF’s Big Board, with defensive tackle Bryan Bresee checking in at No. 6 and defensive end Myles Murphy coming in at No. 10.

Bresee, a redshirt sophomore, and Murphy, a junior, could be battling it out to be the first Clemson player taken in next year’s draft.

Bresee was a third-team All-ACC selection in 2021 despite being limited to four games due to a season-ending torn ACL. He was credited with 15 tackles (3.0 for loss), 1.5 sacks and an interception over 154 snaps in four games (all starts).

The former No. 1 recruit in the country burst onto the scene as a Freshman All-American in 2020, posting 33 tackles (6.5 for loss), 4.0 sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a safety in 432 snaps over 12 games (10 starts). He became the second ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in Clemson history, joining Dexter Lawrence (2016).

Murphy, meanwhile, was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2021. He also collected first-team all-conference honors from the PFF and Phil Steele and second-team honors from the AP, while he was a fourth-team All-American according to Steele.

Last season, the former five-star prospect was credited with 43 tackles, a team-high 14.0 tackles for loss, team-best 7.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups in 549 snaps over 13 games (10 starts).

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Crimson Tide edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and LSU defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy comprise the top five players on PFF’s 2023 Big Board, in that order.

Clemson and Georgia take the field in less than two months in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Sept. 4 and all eyes will be on the renewal of the historic rivalry.

The game carries significant College Football Playoff implications for both teams that hope to compete for a national championship this season.

PFF College released their rankings for the best defenses in college football on Thursday and put both the Tigers and Bulldogs in the top five. And while both teams possess offensive firepower, the season opener will likely be won on the defensive side of the ball.

PFF ranked Alabama at the top with Georgia at No. 2 and Clemson at No. 3.

The Tigers return essentially their entire defense for the 2021 season with the exception of cornerback Derion Kendrick who was ushered off the team this spring and transferred to Georgia where he hopes to make an instant impact in the secondary.

Georgia boasts possibly the toughest defensive line in the nation behind nose guard Jordan Davis and defensive end Travon Walker. Kendrick will help fill a hole at corner alongside redshirt freshman Kelee Ringo.

The unit will have its work cut out against the D.J. Uiagalelei, Justin Ross, E.J. Williams and the Tigers’ offense but is more than talented enough to hold its own.

There are a lot of reasons to get excited for the matchup between the Tigers and Bulldogs but two of the best defenses in the nation squaring up gives plenty of reason for intrigue.

Pro Football Focus hands out multiple awards to Michigan State wide receiver Ricky White

Ricky White already received Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, but now he’s garnered two more awards from PFF College.

[jwplayer sMv4otrW-PROpJzTY]

Ricky White already received Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, but now he’s garnered two more awards from Pro Football Focus College. His record setting performance was enough to earn him True Freshman of the Week with a 90.6 grade as he had eight catches for 196 receiving yards and one touchdown. He was also named to the PFF College pass catchers Team of the Week.

White set a record for most receiving yards by a Spartan freshman in a game. What made it that much better was that it came against the rivals down in Ann Arbor. He joined Alabama WR Devonta Smith, Ole Miss WR Elijah Moore, and Texas A&M TE Jalen Wydermyer on the team. This is the second straight week a Spartan made PFF College’s Team of the Week as Drew Beesley made it last week.

Can White compile another impressive game next week against Iowa as they kickoff at noon on Saturday.
