Oklahoma Baseball loses Bedlam Series rubber match 9-4

The Oklahoma Sooners fell behind No. 4 Oklahoma State in the series finale and couldn’t catch up, dropping the rubber match 9-4.

The No. 4 Oklahoma State Cowboys jumped out to an early lead on Sunday and held on in the final game of thus weekend’s Bedlam series in Stillwater.

While the Oklahoma Sooners had a strong 3-run seventh inning, it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Cowboys.

The Cowboys started doing damage early with a three-run home run by third baseman Nolan Mclean. The Cowboys would lead for the rest of the ballgame.

It wasn’t a good day for Chazz Martinez as he allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. Martinez struck out three batters and didn’t allow a walk m before he was pulled in the fourth.

Martinez picked up the loss and now holds a 2-3 record on the season.

It was a quiet day for the Sooners through the first six innings as they struggled to get any momentum offensively. Oklahoma stranded six baserunners through the first five innings and didn’t get more than one hit in an inning until the seventh.

Aside from a ninth inning home run by shortstop Peyton Graham, it was a frustrating day for the Sooners.

Oklahoma State’s Bryce Osmond struck out eight batters for the Cowboys through six innings of work and picked up the win.

Losing the Bedlam Series isn’t ideal, but this is the number four team in the country and the Sooners showed a lot of backbone on Sunday and in the entire series.

The Sooners are staring another matchup with a top ten opponent in the Texas Tech Red Raiders on April 12 in Amarillo.

Oklahoma Sooners Baseball drops Globe Life Field rubber match to Texas Longhorns 12-8

Oklahoma Baseball lost the rubber match Sunday against the No. 8 Texas Longhorns at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Oklahoma Baseball had a less than ideal weekend against the no. 8 Longhorns at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Texas is a stiff opponent, but losing two of three to the Longhorns always stings.

Over 6000 fans came to see what was a rubber match in the final game of the three-game series between Oklahoma and Texas on Sunday. The Sooners shut out Texas for the first five innings and led 7-1 going into the top of the seventh. Things were looking good.

Then Dylan Campbell stepped up to the plate with two men on base.

It was his second home run of the series and got the Longhorns right back into the game. Murphy Stehly would follow this up with a three-run homer, and the Longhorns would finish the seventh down 7-1.

Getting one win out of the no. 8 team in the country isn’t an awful result, but the Sooners could’ve won the series if they had a better showing in the later innings.

OU is in sixth place in the Big 12, ahead of Baylor, Kansas State, and Kansas. They’re now 3-3 in conference play.

Let’s look at the positives from Sunday’s game: Redshirt Sophomore [autotag]Chazz Martinez[/autotag] struck out seven and allowed one earned run through 5.1 innings.

[autotag]Peyton Graham[/autotag] had a solid 4 RBI day headlined with a three-run homer. The young shortstop is expected to be drafted in July.

It doesn’t get any easier for OU Baseball as they have a series against No. 6 Oklahoma State starting on Friday in Stillwater. Before then, they’ll have a tune-up game against Oral Roberts on Tuesday.

Projecting Oklahoma’s starting lineup and pitching rotation for the 2021 season

Projection of Oklahoma’s 2021 starting lineup and pitching rotation with the season just two days away.

[jwplayer 1qcCMNly-er0jUifI]

Oklahoma Sooners baseball is preparing to begin the 2021 season in just a matter of a couple of days when they head south to do battle with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The matchup came together quickly and suddenly after the Sooners had to find a replacement opponent for Wichita State after weather complications canceled their series with the Shockers set to be played in Round Rock, Texas.

The games with Wichita State, of course, were also put on quickly after Oklahoma’s home series with Southern was canceled due to the winter conditions going through the region this week. But, it does appear the Sooners have found something that will work in this three-game set with the Islanders beginning on Saturday.

With the season less than two full days away from getting fired up, it seems like a great time to take a stab at what the starting lineup and pitching rotation will look like for the bulk of the season based off of last season and what we have heard from head coach Skip Johnson in the last couple of weeks.

Johnson did already reveal what this weekend’s starters will be, and that will be reflected as the plan going forward in the projections. These are not absolutes, just educated projections.

Starting Lineup

  1. RF Tanner Tredaway
  2. LF Brady Harlan
  3. 1B Tyler Hardman
  4. 3B Peyton Graham
  5. C Justin Mitchell
  6. DH Diego Muniz
  7. 2B Conor McKenna
  8. SS Brandon Zaragoza
  9. CF Connor Beichler

Most of the starting lineup from last season is back this year, which makes most of this a relatively solid projection. Where it gets murky is with the outfield and how Skip Johnson will mix in left-handed batters with his generally right-hand heavy team.

Last season, Brady Lindsly was often up in the two-hole as someone with good lefty pop. Without him, figuring out who makes logical sense there is a challenge. Brady Harlan gets put there in this projection for two main reasons: experience and the fact he is a left-handed hitter. A senior who Johnson can likely trust to give him solid at-bats early in the season, he seems to make some sense there at least to start the year.

Tredaway should be leadoff again and the 3-5 spots can stay the same from what used a lot last season. McKenna and Zaragoza should be somewhere in 7-9, but finding out just where is a little tricky as well. Connor Beichler is such an interesting player, it is a bit of a shot in the dark to project him as a starter, but his switch-hitting ability and his speed in the outfield seem to make him as good of a choice as anybody.

Kendall Pettis and Trent Brown could both easily work themselves into this lineup as well, but I would have them just on the outside looking in from this group. Again, these are just projections. Practice each and every day could be changing things, this is largely based off of what was used a year ago.

Starting Rotation

  1. Friday – Wyatt Olds
  2. Saturday – Dalton Fowler
  3. Sunday – Jake Bennett
  4. Tuesday – Luke Taggart
  5. Wednesday – Ben Abram

We have all known for the entire offseason that Wyatt Olds is going to be the No. 1 option and the guy getting the ball on Friday nights. That was confirmed by Skip Johnson earlier this week on the Big 12 teleconference.

He also revealed that JUCO transfer Dalton Fowler would be the No. 2 starter to begin the year. The 6-6 lefty will get a chance to be a big part of this team right out of the gate, and it will be incredibly big for the team if he has a successful year.

Another left-hander rounding out the weekend is Jake Bennett who did some really nice things in his limited time a year ago. He started three times, throwing 12 total innings allowing just one run and six hits while striking out 19. He gets a weekend spot as expected.

I assume graduate transfer Luke Taggart will be getting the ball the bulk of the time on Tuesday nights. He is a guy who has thrown a lot of innings at the collegiate level and should be a reliable option to at the very least eat up some innings for Johnson in the middle of the week to keep the bullpen fresh for the weekend.

Ben Abram should pretty much pick up whatever other starts are available in a given week. After a solid 2019 season, he was another one who really sparkled in his limited time a year ago. He only made one start, but came out of the bullpen three other times to throw 10 total innings allowing just one run and striking out 13. Still just a redshirt sophomore, he has plenty of time to still develop into a weekend pitcher in the years to come.

The Sooners will open their season on the road against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma’s Jason Ruffcorn, Peyton Graham named to preseason All-Big 12 team

Oklahoma relief pitcher Jason Ruffcorn and third baseman Peyton Graham were named to the preseason All-Big 12 team on Wednesday.

It has been a good week for Oklahoma relief pitcher Jason Ruffcorn and third baseman Peyton Graham.

Just two days after they were both named preseason All-Americans by D1Baseball, Ruffcorn and Graham were both selected to the preseason all-Big 12 team on Wednesday.

Ruffcorn looks to be absolutely set up to have a fantastic season for Skip Johnson and company. After showcasing himself well last season, there is a lot of reasonable buzz around what he could be in 2021 as the expected anchor of the Sooners bullpen.

On the offensive side of things, Graham is a quickly rising star for Oklahoma. He burst onto the scene as a freshman a year ago, making an immediate impact and being one of the team’s best offensive players in the short amount of time they were able to play before the season cancellation.

The season is set to start just a hair over three weeks from now, with the Sooners hosting Southern at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Feb. 19th.

Oklahoma’s Jason Ruffcorn, Peyton Graham named preseason All-Americans by D1Baseball

Oklahoma’s Jason Ruffcorn and Peyton Graham were named preseason All-Americans on Monday by D1Baseball.

College baseball is set to begin its season in just over three weeks, and the preseason selections are starting to pour in. On Monday, D1Baseball released their preseason All-American teams with two Oklahoma players making the cut.

Relief pitcher Jason Ruffcorn was named to the first team with third baseman Peyton Graham getting a third-team selection.

Ruffcorn was simply dominant in his time with the Sooners last year before the season was shut down. In eight innings, he struck out 12 batters while only allowing three hits and no runs. Getting five saves in the process, he will slide right back into the closer role for the team in 2021.

Graham is coming off of a freshman season where he certainly turned heads in the games that they got in before the shutdown. In 18 games played, Graham hit .358 with an on-base percentage of .457. He also hit three home runs with 10 runs batted in while playing a very solid third base as well. He has all the makings of a potential star for Skip Johnson in the years to come.

Oklahoma opens their season at home against Southern on Feb. 19th.
