Alex’s best bet: College Football Playoff – SMU at Penn State prediction

SportsbookWire.com’s Alex White likes a side in Saturday’s College Football Playoff game between SMU and Penn State.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

Alex White says Saturday is the “best football day of the year.”

It’s hard to argue when there are 3 first-round College Football Playoff games and 2 NFL games on the docket.

One of those first-round CFP games features Alex’s best bet.

She’s tabbed a side in Saturday’s first contest when the SMU Mustangs (11-2) visit the Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2). Kickoff from Happy Valley is set for noon ET and will be televised on TNT and MAX.

SMU is seeded 11th, while Penn State is seeded sixth. The winner will face No. 3 seed Boise State (12-1) in the Fiest Bowl on New Year’s Eve in Glendale, Ariz.

Saturday will mark the third all-time meeting between SMU and Penn State. The Nittany Lions won the most recent matchup 26-21 at Beaver Stadium back in 1978. The first meeting resulted in a 13-13 tie in the 1948 Cotton Bowl.

As of Saturday at 3:01 a.m. ET, BetMGM Sportsbook lists Penn State as an 8.5-point favorite with -115 juice, while it’s -105 odds for SMU +8.5.

College Football Playoff: SMU at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s SMU at Penn State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The No. 11 seed SMU Mustangs (11-2) and No. 6 seed Penn State Nittany Lions (11-2) meet in the first round of the College Football Playoff Saturday. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for noon ET (TNT/Max). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the SMU vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

SMU lost 34-31 to the Clemson Tigers in the ACC title game on Dec. 7 as a 2.5-point favorite. The Mustangs trailed by 17 points at the end of the third quarter, but stormed back to tie the game before the Tigers won on a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Penn State lost 45-37 to the Oregon Ducks in the Big Ten title game on Dec. 7 as a 3-point underdog. The Nittany Lions racked up 523 total yards and 28 first downs against Oregon, but their 2 turnovers were costly. Penn State is 1-2 against ranked opponents this year.

Penn State is ranked No. 5 and SMU is No. 12 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, conducted by the American Football Coaches Association and USA TODAY Sports

SMU at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 35, SMU 17

Moneyline

PASS.

The Nittany Lions should pick up the win as -350 favorites, but they are not worth the risk of betting on as such heavy favorites, especially not in the playoffs. Pass here and bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN PENN STATE -8.5 (-115).

The Nittany Lions’ offense will allow them to cover in this game as SMU’s defense is bad, allowing 232.7 passing yards per game and over 20 points per game. Penn State’s offense also averages 448.6 yards per game, so the Nittany Lions will be able to get whatever they want here.

Penn State is also officially treating this game as a White Out game, meaning that the crowd will be absolutely electric for the Nittany Lions, which will give them a nice advantage that will help them cover here.

This is a lean because Penn State and coach James Franklin are notorious for throwing away big games.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 53.5 (-110).

The Under has hit in 4 of Penn State’s last 5 home games and is 2-1 in SMU’s last 3 games. The Under is also 7-6 for Penn State this season.

Penn State’s defense will be pivotal to the Under hitting as the Nittany Lions hold opponents to under 285 total yards per game and 16.4 PPG.

Big Ten Championship Game: Penn State vs. Oregon odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Penn State vs. Oregon odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) and No. 1 Oregon Ducks (12-0, 9-0) meet Saturday in the Big Ten Conference Championship Game. Kickoff from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Penn State vs. Oregon odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Oregon took the Big Ten by storm in its first season in the league, running the table as the only unbeaten team in FBS — though it didn’t have to play Penn State or No. 10 Indiana (11-1, 8-1). It had its close shaves, including a 37-34 win over MWC champ Boise State back on Sept. 7. It also narrowly escaped 32-31 against then-No. 2, now-No. 8 Ohio State Oct. 12, while finding a way at Wisconsin in a 16-13 victory Nov. 16.

Penn State has appeared in the Big Ten Championship Game once before when it edged Wisconsin 38-31 in 2016 behind QB Trace McSorley. Big Ten and college football fans are just hoping for a good game, as the past 6 title games have been decided by 12 or more points, including an average margin of victory of 28.7 points per game (PPG) in the previous 3.

While Oregon is 12-0, it is just 1-2 against the spread (ATS) in the past 3 games and 5-6 ATS as a favorite this season. Excluding being 3.5-point home underdogs vs. Ohio State, not only were the Ducks favored in every game, they were favored by double digits. So, this game — and line — is something new to Oregon backers. Also, the Under is 3-1 in their past 4 road games.

Penn State enters on a 4-game win streak, beating Washington, Purdue, Minnesota and Maryland. The Nittany Lions went 3-1 ATS in the stretch. Their lone loss — a 20-13 defeat — came at home to then-No. 4 Ohio State Nov. 2. The Over finished 3-0 in their final 3 games and the offense scored 35 or more points in 3 of the final 4 outings.

These two did not meet in the regular season.

Penn State vs. Oregon picks and predictions

Prediction

Oregon 29, Penn State 19

Moneyline

Oregon (-185) will cost nearly 2 times the potential return. That’s quite a bit of risk for a singular bet. If you were to back the Ducks in a multi-leg parlay, it is more than fine to include them in either an all-football parlay or cross-sport ticket.

PASS.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread

PLAY OREGON -3.5 (-105) laying the points in its first foray into the Big Ten title game.

The Ducks have an electric offense, while the Nittany Lions have a suffocating defense. It will be interesting to see if Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel can pick Penn State’s D apart. He has had a special season, and he certainly has the experience.

The Ducks have a lockdown defense, too, and they’ll throw things at Nittany Lions QB Drew Allar just like the Buckeyes did in Happy Valley earlier in the season. He has had success against the dregs of the league, but struggled against the top- and even mid-tier teams.

Over/Under

UNDER 50.5 (-110) is the lean in this battle for the Big Ten crown.

Both teams sport top-10 defensive units. Penn State has allowed 20 or fewer points in 5 of the past 6 games. Oregon has also allowed 21 or fewer points in its past 6 contests, including just 9 points in a battle with No. 21 Illinois in Eugene Oct. 26.

Purdue at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Purdue at Penn State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Purdue Boilermakers (7-1) and Penn State Nittany Lions (7-1) swing into Big Ten play with a Thursday matchup in State College. The opening tip-off at the Bryce Jordan Center will be at 6:30 p.m. ET (FS1). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Purdue vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Purdue is No. 7 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll. The Boilermakers are coming off taking the title of the Thursday-Friday Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego. A final-second Myles Colvin tip-in of a missed Purdue jumper lifted the Boilermakers to an 80-78 triumph over current-No. 20 Ole Miss in the Friday championship game.

Penn State went 1-1 in the Nov. 25-26 Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach and then returned to Happy Valley for a Sunday game against Buffalo. The Nittany Lions were tabbed as 29-point favorites against the Bulls; they won 87-64.

Purdue at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Purdue 77, Penn State 75

Moneyline

No interest. PASS.

Against the spread

The last 8 series meetings have seen Purdue go 8-0 straight up and 4-4 ATS. But those were different-level Lions the Boilermakers were facing, and many of those games in recent years had PU tabbed as double-digit favorites.

The records here are identical; the road to get here? Not so much. Purdue and Penn State have played wildly different schedules so far. PU has played just one foe ranked outside the KenPom top 200; PSU has played 5 such games. KenPom tabs the Purdue slate to date 37th in the nation; Penn State’s comes in at No. 339.

Purdue is a slow-tempo team, and its lone loss (76-58 loss Nov. 19) came against a speedy high-quality five in Marquette. But that was an off shooting game for PU, and it came on the heels of a victory and an ATS cover against lightning-fast Alabama (87-78 Nov. 15).

The Nittany Lions are a successful rim-and-3 squad. They typically leverage excellent size in getting a slew of inside looks. Figure that part of PSU’s game at least being deemphasized in this one.

The Boilermakers are the much younger squad here, and they are still putting together rotations and the finer points of half-court play. But PURDUE +1.5 (-105) is the value side of this one.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The Over did a fly-by in last year’s meeting, a 95-78 Purdue win with the 173 combo eclipsing the lined total of 151. And the Over is 3-1 in 4 series meetings since 2023.

PSU plays fast, but this is a rabbit-turtle clash with Purdue being at the other end of the spectrum. Still, the number here would mark the lowest total in a Lions game since Nov. 4. The point-spiral factors in this one are distance proficiency (both sides are ranked in the top 50 in 3-point percentage) and high frequency of visits to the charity stripe. Purdue has not been anything special on the boards, but its offensive rebounding percentages the last couple games are noteworthy. The Boilermakers are solid in turning second-chance opportunities into buckets.

TAKE THE OVER 149.5 (-110).

Maryland at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Maryland at Penn State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Maryland Terrapins (4-7, 1-7 Big Ten) pay a visit to the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions (10-1, 7-1) Saturday. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Maryland vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Maryland lost 29-13 as 4.5-point home underdogs to the Iowa Hawkeyes last Saturday with the Over (41) hitting. Maryland was held scoreless up until the 5:57 mark of the third quarter. The Terrapins have lost 4 straight, going 1-3 against the spread (ATS) and haven’t scored more than 18 points in each of their last 3 games.

Penn State scraped by the Minnesota Golden Gophers 26-25 Saturday and wasn’t even close to covering as an 11.5-point road favorite with the Over (45) cashing. The Golden Gophers possessed the ball for 8-plus more minutes than the Nittany Lions, but Minnesota was unable to capitalize on 2 PSU turnovers. Penn State QB Drew Allar finished with 244 passing yards and 2 TDs (1 by air, 1 on the ground). He also steered a key 12-play, 72-yard drive — including 2 fourth-down conversions — on the final possession to run the clock out.

Penn State is 2-1 ATS in its last 3 games, while Maryland has failed to cover in each of its last 2 games and is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games.

The Nittany Lions have won and covered the spread in the last 3 meetings in this series, and is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 head-to-head matchups.

After allowing Minnesota to keep things close in their last outing, the Nittany Lions will be extra motivated to make sure they blow out the Terrapins.

Penn State at Purdue odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Penn State at Purdue odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) travel to face the Purdue Boilermakers (1-8, 0-6) Saturday. Kickoff from Ross-Ade Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Purdue was shut out 45-0 by the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday while failing to cover as a 37-point underdog. Purdue turned the ball over 2 times in the loss while forcing none from the Buckeyes. The Boilermakers have lost 8 straight and have been held scoreless in 2 of their last 3 games.

Penn State at Purdue picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 41, Purdue 3

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State will pick up the win here as a -10000 favorite, but this heavy of a favorite is never worth the risk of betting on. Pass here and bet on the spread and/or Over/Under instead.

Against the spread

BET PENN STATE -29.5 (-110).

Penn State is the much better team on both sides of the ball and is going against a Purdue team that was blown out 52-6 by Wisconsin, a team that Penn State beat by 2 TDs. The Boilermakers are also just 2-7 ATS this season  and have dropped 3 straight ATS.

Be aware that the Nittany Lions are only 4-5 ATS this season.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 50.5 (-110).

The Under has hit in each of Penn State’s last 3 overall and is 7-2 for the Nittany Lions this season. With Purdue being shut out by Ohio State, a team whose defense is of a similar caliber to Penn State’s, the Nittany Lions’ defense will have no trouble holding this Purdue squad to single-digit points.

This is a lean both because 3 of the last 4 matchups between these squads hit the Over and because Purdue’s defense is so bad that Penn State could put up 50 points by itself in this matchup.

Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Washington vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Washington at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 24, Washington 14

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State needs this win and will pick get it as a -550 favorite, but the Nittany Lions are not worth the risk of betting on as such heavy favorites. Bet the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN WASHINGTON +13.5 (-110).

Washington has been solid competition for some good Big Ten squads, and with Penn State’s morale being lower now than at any point of the season, the Huskies have the perfect opportunity to make this a close game. Look for Penn State to be sluggish coming out the gate, allowing Washington to stay in this game.

This is a lean because both teams have been bad ATS this season and because Penn State has won by bigger margins vs. better teams, like its 21-7 win over Illinois.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 46.5 (-110).

These are 2 of the best defenses in the Big Ten. Penn State allows just 278.9 yards per game (YPG) and 15 points per game (PPG), eighth-best in the nation. Washington allows 292.8 YPG and 19 PPG (ranking 21st). Combine that with the way that Penn State’s offense struggled vs. Ohio State and you’ve got the perfect equation for the Under to hit here.

Ohio State at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Ohio State at Penn State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The 4th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) and 3rd-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (7-0, 4-0) meet Saturday at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET (FOX). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Ohio State vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Ohio State edged Nebraska 21-17 last week despite being a 25-point favorite as the Under (48.5) cashed. The Buckeyes might have been caught looking ahead to this titanic matchup, the 2nd top-5 battle since Oct. 12 for Ohio State.

Penn State picked up a 28-13 win on the road against Wisconsin, cashing as a 6.5-point favorite as the Under (46.5) connected. The Nittany Lions have won all 7 games, but Penn State is just 1-3 against the spread (ATS) in the past 4 games and 2-4 ATS across the previous 6 outings. The Under is 4-1 in the previous 5 contests.

Ohio State has won 7 straight meetings in this series since a 24-21 win by Penn State Oct. 22, 2016. Despite the win streak, the Nittany Lions are an impressive 6-2 ATS in the past 8 in the series, with the Under going 5-1 in the past 6 and 7-2 across the past 9 meetings.

Ohio State at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Ohio State 26, Penn State 20

Moneyline

If you’re a bit on the conservative side, OHIO STATE (-160) isn’t priced out of line if you simply want to pick a winner and not fool around with the points.

Penn State (+135) heads into this game with no blemishes on the record, but it has no real marquee games on the schedule so far. The team’s best wins are against Illinois at home, as well as road games against USC and Wisconsin. USC is a .500 team with 4 losses, and the Nittany Lions needed OT to win 33-30 Oct. 12.

Against the spread

Back OHIO STATE -3 (-115) at Happy Valley in this noon time kickoff.

The Buckeyes have already been tested in a road game at Oregon, falling 32-31 in a narrow setback in a marquee battle in Eugene 3 weeks ago. Ohio State was sleepwalking through last week’s Nebraska game, perhaps sneaking a peek ahead at this road trip.

Over/Under

UNDER 47.5 (-115) is the lean, but only go with a half-unit play at most.

The Under has cashed in 3 of the past 4 games for Ohio State, and it has allowed 17 or fewer points in 6 of 7 games to date.

For the Nittany Lions, the Under has cashed in 4 of the past 5 outings, while going a perfect 3-0 in the past 3 home contests.

Penn State at Wisconsin odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Penn State at Wisconsin odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) travel to take on the Wisconsin Badgers (5-2, 3-1) Saturday. Kickoff from Camp Randall Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Penn State vs. Wisconsin odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Penn State, who had a bye last week, escaped with a 33-30 OT victory over USC in its last outing. The Nittany Lions put up 518 total yards in the game and scored 27 2nd-half points to overcome a 20-6 deficit and 3 turnover outing vs. USC. Penn State is No. 3 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Wisconsin picked up a 23-3 win over the Northwestern Wildcats Saturday while covering as a 9.5-point favorite. Wisconsin’s 359 total yards, 19 first downs and just under 33 minutes of possession, all out-doing the Wildcats,  helped the Badgers overcome a 2-turnover game vs. Northwestern. The Badgers have won 3 straight and have not allowed more than 7 points in any of those 3 wins.

Penn State at Wisconsin picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 27, Wisconsin 14

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State will pick up the win as a -250 favorite, but the Nittany Lions are not worth the risk of betting on as such heavy favorites. Bet on the spread and/or O/U instead.

Against the spread

BET PENN STATE -6.5 (-110).

Penn State will need a game to get its confidence up before going against the juggernaut Ohio State Buckeyes in its next outing, so expect the Nittany Lions to come out firing here. The Nittany Lions also can’t afford another close game vs. an underdog like they had vs. USC, giving Penn State even more motivation to pick up this win by a comfortable margin.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 47.5 (-110).

Both squads are very good defensively, with Penn State allowing only 262.5 yards per game and 14.5 points per game and Wisconsin allowing 295.7 yards and 17.6 points per game.

The Under has also hit in 3 of Penn State’s last 4 games.

This is a lean because both squads average over 29 points per game and because the Over is 4-1 in Wisconsin’s last 5.
