A new era of college basketball at Penn State under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry features a roster of returning vets and a handful of transfers to build with in 2021-22. Among those who are returning to Penn State this season as the transition begins is forward Seth Lundy, who made the decision to run it back with the Nittany Lions after stepping into the NCAA transfer portal during the offseason.

2020 statistics

GP FG% REB AST STL PTS
25 .385 104 19 18 252

Lundy has been one of Penn State’s best players to rely on during his time in Happy Valley, and that will continue to be the case in 2021-22. Although he can be kind of streaky, Micah Shrewsberry will hope to find some more consistency out of Lundy in the offense. After an offseason of some roster turnover, Lundy is Penn State’s leading scorer back for this season.

Lundy’s biggest flaw when it came with inconsistency was not performing at his most productive state against the strength of the Penn State basketball schedule. And considering some of the obstacles facing the Nittany Lions in Big Ten play and on the non-conference schedule, Lundy has to find a way to be more reliable in the biggest moments for the Nittany Lions if the NCAA Tournament drought is going to end this season.

If Penn State is going to be going dancing this season, Lundy will be a big reason why.

2021-2022 Penn state Nittany Lions Profile Card: Irekefe Oweh

Penn State Men’s Basketball Profile Card: Irekefe “Don’t call me Odafe’s younger brother” Oweh

Name: Irekefe Oweh

Number: 0

Position: Guard

Class: Sophomore

Weight: 188

Hometown: North Brunswick, NJ

High School: Rutgers Prep

Previous School: St. Thomas Aquinas College

Twitter: @kayoweh

If Penn State basketball can get the kind of basketball player out of the Oweh family that James Franklin and the football program did with Odafe Oweh, then the Nittany Lions basketball program could be scary good in due time. Irekefe Oweh, the younger brother of current Baltimore Ravens defensive rookie of the year candidate Odafe Oweh, is in his sophomore season with the Nittany Lions and is looking to develop into a key role with the program the way his older brother did on the football field.

Oweh came to Penn State by way as a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas College, where he played in 12 games as a freshman in 2020-21. Prior to his first season of college basketball, Oweh was a high school star for Rutgers Prep in New Jersey, earning All-League honors and accumulating 700 career points and 250 rebounds.

Oweh will be a deep bench option in the 2021-22 season for Micah Shrewsberry as Penn State is pretty heavy on guards this season, and a few others will be likely to be the first off the bench before getting to Oweh.

But as his older brother showed, sometimes good things will come to those who wait. Odafe Oweh was a bit of a late bloomer for Penn State on the football field, eventually proving himself worthy of a first-round draft pick in the NFL. We won’t go so far as to suggest Irekefe Oweh will develop into a first-round NBA talent, but Penn State hopes Oweh has similar athleticism that can translate to some big moments on the court in the years to come.

Micah Shrewsberry says blowout loss to UMass is learning opportunity for Penn State

What Penn State basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry said after a blowout loss to UMass

The new era of Penn State basketball got off to a good start in a season-opening win at home, but a road trip to UMass for the second game of the season was not particularly kind to the Nittany Lions. Penn State was blown away by the Minutemen, 81-52, thanks to a big second half by former Penn State player Trent Buttrick to help lead his new team to a big win on Monday evening.

After the game, Penn State men’s head coach Micah Shrewsberry took responsibility for the way his program lost on the road after suffering his first loss as a head coach.

ā€œItā€™s all a learning experience,” Shrewsberry said in his postgame media availability (via Blue White Illustrated). “Early in the year, these games are hard.”

Even though this was the first road game of the season & this is a learning experience for Penn State as there is plenty of time to make whatever changes needed to get back to their winning ways.

Penn State is a program in a state of transition with a blend of returning players and a batch of transfers brought in by Shrewsberry during the offseason. As such, it could easily take some time to form an identity as a team, and Shrewsberry knows that expecting all of the pieces to fall into place in the second game of the season, and the first on the road, is misguided. Instead, Shrewsberry stressed that this loss on the road is a great opportunity to learn on the go for the Nittany Lions.

ā€œWinning is hard at any level, but for a new team, this is something we have to use this as a learning experience,” Shrewsberry said Monday night. “If we donā€™t come out playing with our hair on fire on Thursday, then this game is for naught.ā€

Penn State returns to the Bryce Jordan Center on Thursday when they take on St. Francis Brooklyn as part of the Emerald Coast Classic. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will stream live on B1G+.

Ex-Penn State player torches Nittany Lions as UMass wins blowout

Penn State basketball burned by former Nittany Lion Trent Buttrick as UMass wins a blowout in Amherst

The second game of the Micah Shrewsberry era at Penn State hit a speedbump in Amherst, Massachusetts on Monday night. Then it got stuck in a pothole that turned into a sinkhole and swallowed the entire program in the process. Penn State was drubbed by UMass on the road on Monday night with the Nittany Lions slumping their way back to State College with an 81-56 loss.

Turnovers and hot shooting by the Minutemen teamed up to spell Penn State’s doom in the second half of the game. After trailing by four at halftime, Penn State just could not keep up the pace against UMass, who got a big night from Trent Buttrick, who transferred to UMass in the offseason from Penn State. Buttrick was the leading scorer for UMass with 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Penn State was outscored by UMass in the second half, 44-23, after starting the second half on a 20-4 run.

Penn State was led by Seth Lundy in the scoring department with 14 points. Sam Sessoms had 12 points and John Harrar was Penn State’s rebound leader with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Penn State looks to bounce back into the win column on Thursday night when they return to the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State is scheduled to host St. Francis Brooklyn in the first game of the Emerald Coast Classic.
