UFC on ESPN 53 video: Payton Talbott throttles Cameron Saaiman with strikes for TKO

Payton Talbott kept his undefeated record in tact by stopping Cameron Saaiman with strikes at UFC on ESPN 53.

[autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag] maintained his undefeated record with a beautiful performance against Cameron Saaiman at UFC on ESPN 53.

The bantamweight main card bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas nearly didn’t see a second round, but Talbott (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) ensured it ended there after dropping Saaiman (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) with a hard left hook. The follow-up strikes on led to a TKO finish at 0:21 in Round 2.

The fight was Talbott’s from the moment it began.

In the first round, the Las Vegas native Talbott patiently picked off Saaiman with accurate strikes throughout. Anything he threw landed effectively, and after a flurry of strikes in Round 1, he nearly ended the fight. Somehow, Saaiman did just enough to keep the referee away.

However, early in Round 2, Talbott connected with a sharp left hand to drop the South African, ultimately leading to the finish soon after.

Talbott has been very impressive early in his UFC career. The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran has finished both of his opponents: Nick Aguirre by third-round submission and Saaiman by second-round TKO.

Think fortune and glory won’t make Payton Talbott change a bit? Think again

Ahead of UFC on ESPN 53, Payton Talbott says if he gets to superstar status, expect the fame to change him … at least a little.

LAS VEGAS – Is fortune and glory going to change [autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag]?

The diplomatic answer for the 25-year-old bantamweight, of course, is to say he’ll stay the same. After all, that’s how it’s been so far.

“Not too much (has changed since I got into the UFC),” Talbott said at Wednesday’s media day for UFC on ESPN 53 (ESPN/ESPN+). “I feel like I prioritize my career more. I’ve definitely put a lot more time into that, as well as expression of what I want to put out on the internet and everything. But everything else has pretty much been the same.

“It was after my first (UFC) win is when there’s just been more people that notice me.”

Talbott (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on Saturday meets Cameron Saaiman (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) on the UFC on ESPN 53 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. He’ll be looking to stay unbeaten against what arguably will be his toughest opponent yet, at least on paper.

For Talbott, a win like that will keep him on a path toward prospect status, and then he can start thinking about what will happen if he becomes a star.

Honesty is a great thing.

“I mean, the money is going to change me. Like – I’ll just tell you right now,” Talbott said. “But I’ll still be myself and I’ll have my core values and try to compete as much as possible. I’m not worried about it. I don’t think I’m going to change into a terrible person.”

UFC Fight Night 232 video: Payton Talbott punishes Nick Aguirre for first career submission

25-year-old Payton Talbott delivered his first career submission in his octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 232.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Payton Talbott[/autotag] earned the first submission win of his MMA career on Saturday – and did it on the biggest stage thus far against [autotag]Nick Aguirre[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 232.

With Aguirre (7-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) determined to grapple, he landed a big takedown early and drained the clock over the first round. Talbott (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) wouldn’t let that happen again, because in the second he turned the tables and controlled position in the second. Then in the final frame, he hurt his opponent with a big kick, got mount position and locked in the fight-ending rear-naked choke at the 0:58 mark of Round 3 at the UFC Apex.

Check out the replay of Talbott’s effort below (via X):

At just 25, Talbott lived up to his prospect status in the bantamweight division with the win. He said he wasn’t thrilled with his overall performance, but ultimately got the result he needed.

“I think I learned kind of sloppy in the first round, but I woke up,” Talbott told Paul Felder during his post-fight interview. “I’m my worst critic at the end of the day and no one is harder on me than myself.”
