Tommy Fury’s camp: Jake Paul refused drug testing implementation ahead of fight

Tommy Fury’s camp: Jake Paul refused drug testing implementation ahead of fight.

Editor’s note: This article was originally published on MMAJunkie.com.

According to Tommy Fury’s camp, Jake Paul will not be tested ahead of their upcoming boxing match – and it was of his own volition.

John Fury, the brashly outspoken father of Tommy Fury and heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, claimed in a recent interview with Rob Moore that the YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul refused VADA testing be added as a stipulation into their pre-fight requirements – despite all of the other unusual clauses.

“There was all kinds of stuff in the contracts,” John Fury said. “There was all kinds of it, like, ‘You’ve got to change your name for a year. You’ve got to do this. You’ve got to do that.’ … He’s got to change his name to ‘Tommy Fumbles’ for a year. All rubbish on that. I could go into it more and more but I don’t want to bore people with politics. Do you know what I’m saying?…

“And like everything else, he wouldn’t sign up for the VADA testing either. That bothered me a little bit because I want that in the contract. But he wouldn’t do that. But I’m not even bothered about that because what they’re going to do, they’re going to do anyway.

“So yeah, we just want the fight because we know we can win it. The people that think Tommy is getting paid to lose, they’re joking.”

While it’s unclear if Paul was tested ahead of his bouts against Ali Enson Gib and Ben Askren, he was prior to his most recent fight against Tyron Woodley, MMA Junkie confirmed with an Ohio State Athletic Commission official in August.

Paul (4-0) will take on fellow undefeated professional Fury (7-0) at a weight of 192 pounds. The eight-round fight will take place Dec. 18 at Amelie Arena in Tampa, Fla., and air on Showtime pay-per-view.

Jake Paul says Tommy Fury easier fight than Tyron Woodley: ‘I’m gonna knock him the f— out’

Although Tommy Fury is the first legitimate boxer Jake Paul is going to face, he doesn’t view him as his toughest test.

YouTube sensation-turned pro boxer Paul has notched four wins since lacing up the gloves, picking up wins over YouTuber AnEsonGib, former NBA player Nate Robinson, former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Ben Askren, and former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

He faces Fury on Dec. 18 in an eight-round, 192-pound catchweight bout at Amalie Arena and although Fury has seven pro boxing wins under his belt, he doesn’t think the unbeaten Brit has ever been properly tested.

“This is an easier fight than Tyron,” Paul said at the pre-fight U.K. press conference. “This is a young kid who’s never had a real fight, and I’m gonna knock him the f*ck out because he doesn’t have a chin. He’s never even been hit hard by anybody.”

He continued, “These people think they’re gonna come in and beat me because they have amateur careers or they’re professional this or UFC that. They don’t understand what they’re getting in with. It’s funny to see each and every one of them fail in front the world.

“The same exact thing is gonna happen to Tommy and people will just come back and look at these press conferences and these interviews and say, ‘Damn, this kid really knew what he was talking about.’”

Fury, the 22-year-old half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, thinks Paul bit off more than he can chew by accepting to face someone who’s actually dedicated their life to the sport of boxing.

“When his fights aren’t rigged, he can’t win,” Fury said. “When his fights aren’t rigged and set up, he loses. Let’s be honest, I’m not a UFC fighter, I’m not a YouTuber, and I’m not a basketball player.

“I’ve been doing this my whole life and come Dec. 18, you’re gonna have a funny look at the team around you because they got you in a world of trouble.”

Former NBA guard Deron Williams, former NFL RB Frank Gore ready for boxing debuts

Former NBA guard Deron Williams, former NFL RB Frank Gore ready for boxing debuts on Jake Paul-Tommy Fury card.

Editor’s note: This story originally published at USA TODAY Sports.

NEW YORK – Deron Williams and Frank Gore insist they aren’t entering the squared circle because they need the money or any extra notoriety.

Both excelled in sports that made them household names and millions of dollars. But as they venture into a boxing ring, both say the competitive juices that most athletes need to succeed still burn inside.

The former NBA and NFL athletes will make their pro boxing debut on Dec. 18 in a four-round heavyweight match at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Williams and Gore are on the undercard of the Jake Paul-Tommy Fury main event, with undefeated seven-division world champion Amanda Serrano also on the card. Both have heard the skeptics questioning former athletes who go into different ventures – especially combat sports – after their playing careers are over.

And there are plenty of doubters to go around. Williams is 37 years old, four years removed from his last competitive professional basketball game. Gore is 38 and played last season with the New York Jets, where he finished the season ranked third on the NFL’s all-time leading rushers list.

Chris DeBlasio, SVP of Showtime Sports Communications, said the network had to think twice before entering into the world of celebrity boxing.

“We had to ask ourselves are they serious about boxing. Was this going to be a circus? Is this serious boxing, and can we show the respect for the sport and with that, a celebrity fight,” DeBlasio said. “These guys have trained for months and sometimes years and we want to make a legitimate competition, just like any other fight.”

Both fighters will be contractually limited to weighing 215 pounds or below for the fight, which will be broadcast on Showtime PPV.

“I have always been drawn to contact sports, it has always in the back of my mind,” Williams said.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been training for six years leading up to this fight and said he had an MMA match in the works before the global pandemic hit. “If I didn’t take this opportunity, I would be kicking myself for the rest of my life.”

Gore is a decided underdog, mainly because of six-inch height disadvantage.

“I have been an underdog all of my life. From living in a one-bedroom apartment with 12 people, to making it the NFL and with the knee injuries and I overcame that. Nobody thought I would make it,” Gore said. “But anyone who is willing to get in the ring has to be tough, so Dec. 18 we will find out.”

NFL’s Frank Gore, NBA’s Deron Williams to square off on Jake Paul-Tommy Fury card

Frank Gore and Deron Williams have agreed to fight one another on the Jake Paul-Tommy Fury pay-per-view card on Dec. 18.

More former athletes are choosing to get punched in the face.

Former NFL running back Frank Gore and retired NBA player Deron Williams have agreed to exchange blows with one another on the Jake Paul-Tommy Fury pay-per-view card on Dec. 18 in Tampa, Florida, Showtime announced.

They are making their professional boxer debuts in the scheduled four-round bout, with an agreed-upon limit of 215 pounds.

Williams, 37, is 6-foot-3 and played at around 200 pounds. The three-time all-star last played in the 2016-217 season. Gore, 38, is 5-9 and weighed about 215 as a player. He retired after last season.

“Combat sports have been a part of my life since my youngest days,” said Williams, who grew up in Texas. “Before I was a basketball player, I was a wrestler. Since 2015, I have had the privilege of owning an MMA gym, and through that I have trained in various martial arts to stay active.

“Over the last year, I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to translate my training into a professional debut. I’m making that happen on December 18 against Frank, one of the physically strongest NFL players in history.”

Said Gore, a future NFL Hall of Famer from Miami: “I’m excited to be fighting on this card and can’t wait to show the world what I’ve been working on. Boxing has me excited, and on December 18 expect fireworks!”

Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) and Fury (7-0, 4 KOs) will fight one another in a scheduled eight-round cruiserweight bout. Fury is the half-brother of heavyweight champ Tyson Fury.

Jake Paul to face Tommy Fury in PPV bout on Dec. 18

Jake Paul will face Tommy Fury in a pay-per-view bout on Dec. 18 in Tampa, Florida.

Jake Paul’s next fight is set. And it could be his toughest to date.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer will face Tommy Fury, the half brother of heavyweight champ Tyson Fury, in a pay-per-view bout on Dec. 18 in Tampa, Florida.

Fury (7-0, 4 KOs) is the first genuine boxer Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) will have faced in his young career.

“I’m looking forward to my toughest challenge yet and continuing to prove the critics wrong,” Paul said. “’Fight a real boxer,’ they’ve said, and that is exactly what I’m doing. An undefeated boxer from the legendary Fury bloodline.

“However, this one is more than just boxing for me. It’s for America and showing the world there is no other country that gives you the opportunity to achieve whatever you set your mind to. It’s for every young person who has a dream and dedicates their life to achieving it. ”

Fury is a reality TV star in the U.K. but has more of a boxing background than Paul, with a reported 12 amateur fights and seven pro fights.

The native of Manchester is much smaller than his more famous 6-foot-9 sibling. Tommy Fury is 6-feet and weighs around 180 pounds. Paul is 6-1 and round 190.

“Jake Paul is about to learn a serious life lesson,” . This is my world, and he doesn’t belong here. I’m not one of these MMA men or basketball players. I have been boxing my whole life. On December 18th I will show the world the difference between a YouTuber and a real fighting man.

“Thanks to my promoter Frank Warren, Most Valuable Promotions and Showtime for giving me the opportunity to shut this clown up once and for all.”

Paul has defeated fellow YouTuber Ali Eson Gib, former NBA player Nate Robinson and former MMA fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley, the last fighting taking place in August.

Fury has been busy this year. This will be his fourth fight of 2021.
