Paul Felder: If Mike Perry gets Darren Till in his corner it might be the best case scenario for him

Paul Felder thinks Mike Perry would actually benefit from having Darren Till in his corner.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] thinks [autotag]Mike Perry[/autotag] would actually benefit from having [autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] in his corner.

Perry (14-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) startled the MMA community this week when he announced plans to auction off a spot in his corner for his upcoming fight against Robbie Lawler at UFC 255. Things got even crazier when Till, a longtime rival of “Platinum,” threw his name in the hat.

Till initially offered Perry $5,000, then started a GoFundMe so fans can help contribute and raise money. Although Till is known for his banter, Felder echoes fellow analyst Dan Hardy’s opinion, and thinks that Till would certainly give him better advice than a random fan.

“Ultimately it’s up to him and it’s up to the fighter,” Felder told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Wednesday. “Whoever they wanna have in there, as long as they fill out all the paperwork and do their thing, that’s his decision. He’s a guy that maybe isn’t gonna listen to them anyway. He’s just gonna do his own thing. I don’t mean that disrespectfully, some guys are gonna ride off their emotions and instincts in the octagon and Mike is definitely one of those guys.”

Perry’s biggest win to date is arguably against Felder, when he edged him out via split decision at UFC 226 in 2018. In his corner was the famed Jackson Wink MMA team, and Felder thinks Perry was able to take good advice and translate it into one of his finer performances.

So, having a fighter like Till, who actually has knowledge of technique and the overall game, wouldn’t be so crazy, Felder said. However, he doubts it comes to fruition.

“When he fought me, he had a good corner,” Felder said. “He was out at Jackson’s and Winkeljohn and had Frank Lester in his corner and that’s who he was working pads with and he listened. They were yelling out certain code words and he was following those so even though it maybe it was frustrating him to do that, he beat me and he had a good performance and he was more technical in that fight than we’ve seen him in other fights.

“So, I don’t know what’s gonna happen. If he gets Darren Till, it might be the best case scenario for him so hopefully Darren is serious and chucks out that cash, but I don’t see Mike letting that happen.”

Video: Did Israel Adesanya’s dry-hump celebration go too far?

UFC fighters-turned-commentators Paul Felder, Dan Hardy and Angela Hill offer their unique perspectives on Israel Adesanya’s celebration.

ABU DHABI – Did [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] go too far with his UFC 253 post-fight celebration?

After finishing [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] with strikes in Round 2, Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) dry-humped his downed rival who laid face down on the canvas. Moments later, Adesanya was seen exchanging words with Costa’s coach, Eric Albarracin, before pretending to ejaculate on him.

On Tuesday, three UFC fighters-turned-commentators weighed in on the topic during a series of interviews. [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag], [autotag]Dan Hardy[/autotag] and [autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] each offered a unique perspective on Adesanya’s hip-thrusting on top of Costa (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC).

UFC’s Dave Shaw: Dan Hardy-Herb Dean conflict to be investigated by promotion

UFC senior vice president Dave Shaw said conversations will be had following Dan Hardy’s heated mid-event exchange with referee Herb Dean at UFC on ESPN 14.

ABU DHABI – UFC’s senior vice president David Shaw revealed conversations would take place back home in Las Vegas following [autotag]Dan Hardy[/autotag]’s on-air outburst at referee Herb Dean and subsequent exchange between the pair after Francisco Trinaldo’s TKO win over Jai Herbert at UFC on ESPN 14.

Hardy and his co-commentary colleague [autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] were both clearly upset by Dean’s handling of the finish to Trinaldo’s stoppage win over debutant Herbert, after the fight was allowed to continue, despite Herbert appearing to be knocked stiff by a huge punch from the Brazilian.

Both men were vocal in their calls for Dean to step in and stop the fight, while even Trinaldo stopped to allow Dean to wave it off, before eventually continuing and landing four unanswered shots at the clearly scrambled Herbert before the fight the referee intervened.

Hardy was incensed, and photographs shared from cageside showed the former welterweight title challenger remonstrating with the official in the aftermath of the fight before the Englishman recomposed himself to conduct the post-fight interview with Trinaldo.

When asked about the incident at the post-fight press conference, Shaw admitted: “I wasn’t on the floor when it happened. I did hear some of the comments on the broadcast. Here’s the thing, being a ref in MMA is one of the hardest roles that you can have, and Herb Dean is one of our best, categorically. (The) bottom line is, health and safety of the athletes is of paramount importance. On the other side, you’ve got a guy like Hardy who, very successful MMA career, an excellent analyst right now, but he’s passionate and he’s fiery.

“The important thing for us to do is to try and get a handle and try to get an understanding of what actually happened. Obviously, this is not something that you address with either one of the parties during the show. These guys have a job to do and so we certainly don’t want to disrupt their efforts to do an excellent job, as we expect they always will. So we’ll go back, we’ll check it out, try to get a better understanding of what happened and really take it from there.”

[lawrence-related id=538542]

Hardy’s response drew words of support from the UFC’s lead play-by-play commentator Jon Anik, who tweeted, “Dan Hardy has always had my respect as one of the best MMA minds/analysts out there but he’s especially deserving of praise tonight. Analysts must be critical when they believe the situation calls for it. Can’t hold back. He didn’t. He’s not trying to make friends.”

But Shaw hinted that Hardy may have stepped out of line by interacting with Dean during the event, noting that officials should only be approached by regulatory staff during events.

“I guess the bottom line is there’s one group of people that are able to talk to officials during the fight night, and that’s (Marc) Ratner’s regulatory group, and no one else,” he clarified. “So we’ll see what happens next week when we get back to the office.”

Paul Felder will pause broadcast duties for one fight to corner Jared Gordon at UFC on ESPN 13

Paul Felder will be on double duty Wednesday when he steps away from the commentating booth to corner Jared Gordon at UFC on ESPN 13.

[autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] will be on double duty Wednesday.

After all of [autotag]Jared Gordon[/autotag]’s coaches failed to make the trip to Abu Dhabi after testing positive for COVID-19, Felder will step in to corner good friend and teammate Gordon at UFC on ESPN 13.

Gordon, who recently moved to Florida to train at Sanford MMA, traveled to Abu Dhabi alone and will now have Felder and Xtreme Couture head coach Eric Nicksick in his corner for his fight against Chris Fishgold on Wednesday.

SuckerPunch Entertainment head Brian Butler revealed the news of Gordon’s new corner in an Instagram post Sunday.

“Breaking: @jaredflashgordon’s coaches and team all tested positive for CV and were not able to make the trip to corner him. With no corners or coaches Jared was determined to fight and pressed through set back after setback and still made his way to Fight Island. In an unprecedented move, long time friend, training partner and fellow SP teammate, @felderpaul is scheduled to commentate the remaining events on Fight Island and has gotten clearance to come off the desk to help his friend through the fight during the event. Also long time SP friend @eric_xcmma who is there with fellow SP client @dynamitedan808 will step up and help Jared in his fight. #1team1dream #represented”

Felder, a longtime training partner of Gordon’s at Roufusport in Milwaukee, took to Instagram to comment on his cornering duties.

Paul Felder thinks the ‘Felder Curse’ is ‘blown out of proportion’

Paul Felder was propelled into a unique storyline ahead of the UFC on ESPN 12 main event between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker.

[autotag]Paul Felder[/autotag] was propelled into a unique storyline heading into June’s UFC on ESPN 12 main event between Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker.

Ahead of the fight, it was noted by Twitter user @UFC_Sasuke that every person who has beaten Felder (17-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) in MMA competition has gone on to lose their next fight. Hooker, of course, was coming off a unanimous decision win over “The Irish Dragon” in February, which set him up for the clash with Poirier.

Poirier went on to beat Hooker by unanimous decision in a “Fight of the Year” candidate, and the curse continued.

“It’s crazy bro,” Felder told MMA Junkie. “You can’t make this (expletive) up sometimes. I saw this guy. I can’t think of his Twitter handle now. A random Twitter handle. Not a huge profile but then he posted this stat and I retweeted it then Ariel Helwani got ahold of it then they’re asking (Hooker) about it, then ESPN is posting about it. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I never expected this thing to (blow up).'”

Felder said he doesn’t quite understand why this particular piece of information got so much traction, but he doesn’t buy into the narrative he’s some sort of jinx.

[lawrence-related id=530978,530715]

The fact remains the five men to have beaten Felder – Hooker, Mike Perry, Francisco Trinaldo, Ross Pearson and Edson Barboza – have not been able to win the fight after facing him. He just hopes this doesn’t become such a big point that it seeps into his reality.

“It’s just all coincidental,” Felder said. “It has nothing to do with me. It was just a completely random thing. It got completely blown out of proportion. Hopefully it doesn’t backfire on me and now guys are like, ‘I’m not beating you and then losing my next fight.’ It could be a big fight for them.”
