These 5 players will define Florida’s offensive identity

These five players are expected to be difference-makers in 2022.

The arrival of [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] in Gainesville brought the usual buzz of excitement that a new regime always carries with it. But now the rubber is about to meet the road and all the good vibes and big talk in the world won’t win the Gators’ games for them. The coaching and roster in place now will define what Florida’s identity becomes under Napier and his top assistants, [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag].

On the offensive side of the ball, Sale is spearheading the coaching and schematic decisions that have shaped the current state of the team. Whether it will pay dividends is about to be seen, but it’s already clear which players will be the pivot points for the identity of the Napier/Sale offense.

The five players we’ve singled out here aren’t necessarily who you’d call the most important, but some make more of an impact than their standing with the team and fame with fans might indicate.

This top 2024 safety recruit set his visit date for Florida’s season opener

It is going to be a packed house in the recruiting section on September 3.

The list of prep prospects planning on making their way to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for Florida football’s 2022 season-opening game against the Utah Utes continues to grow. Among the many adding their names to the roster of attendees is four-star safety [autotag]Jaylen Heyward[/autotag] out of Rockledge, Florida, who is one of the top players at his position in the 2024 class.

The 5-foot-11.5-inch, 180-pound defensive back made his second stop in Gainesville for the program’s Friday Night Lights event at the end of July, which gave him increased face time with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] — the coach most involved in his recruiting — as well as others.

“I talk with Coach Toney the most, but I also talk with Coach Jamar Chaney and Coach [William] Peagler,” he told Swamp247. “Coach Toney is a really good DC and I love the way he runs a defense. Low-key, he runs a really similar defense to my high school, so it’s really easy to buy in and understand it.”

The rising junior released his top 12 schools list back in June, with the Gators along with the Alabama Crimson TideGeorgia Bulldogs, Miami Hurricanes, Ohio State BuckeyesOregon Ducks and Tennessee Volunteers included as major players for the young student-athlete. He holds 33 total offers heading into his fall campaign.

Heyward is ranked No. 45 overall and No. 5 at his position in his class nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 42 and 3, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Florida far in front for the safety’s talents with an 89.6% chance of landing him.

Florida picks up a pair of crystal ball predictions from 247Sports

Although he’s yet to take his official visits, a pair of crystal balls have come in for safety Bryce Thornton in favor of Florida.

A pair of 247Sports recruiting insiders are convinced that three-star [autotag]Bryce Thornton[/autotag] will wind up a part of the 2023 Florida Gators recruiting class.

Both Blake Alderman and Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports logged crystal balls for Thornton on Monday, August 22, with a confidence score of six. Thornton narrowed things down to Florida, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Miami in April and is trending toward the Gators, Tide and Hurricanes. He has official visits lined up to all three programs during the fall.

Miami gets him on September 23, which is the weekend UM hosts Middle Tennessee State. Alabama is getting him for the Texas A&M game on Oct. 7, and Florida should get the last meeting with him on October 21, which is a bye week for the Gators.

“Though Miami has a visit scheduled, they seem more active with some other names on their board at this time,” Alderman wrote. “Alabama currently has three safeties committed in their 2023 recruiting class, and while they like Thornton, it doesn’t seem likely at this point for them to add a fourth. Then that leaves the Florida Gators, who have wanted to add some new blood into their safety room through the recruiting trail. Sources have also indicated to Swamp247 that Thornton is an absolute take for this coaching staff as well.”

Thornton’s last trip to the Swamp came in June, and he left extremely high on the program. Co-defensive coordinator [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] and tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag], who is Florida’s area recruiter in Alpharetta, Georgia, have continued to press since then and hope to land a second safety to the class.

Four-star safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag], the No. 200 overall recruit on the 247Sports composite, is the only other safety committed to Florida at publishing time, and Thornton would provide some depth to the class. The composite ranks him No. 502 overall and No. 45 among safeties. On3 is a little higher on Thornton, ranking him No. 28 at his position and giving him four stars.

Two Florida coaches in top 15 of 247Sports’ recruiter rankings

Florida’s coaching staff has been on a roll lately, and much of it is thanks to two men in particular. 247Sports has them in their top 15.

When [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] assembled his staff at the University of Florida, he said that he wanted to prioritize recruiting. Twenty commitments into the class of 2023 and one class of 2024 four-star verbally pledge to the Orange and Blue, it’s safe to say that Napier was successful, and the numbers back it up.

Co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag] is ranked No. 7 on the 247Sports 2023 football recruiter rankings, and [autotag]Keary Colbert[/autotag] is ranked No. 11, which is good for the second-highest placement of any wide receivers coach on the list.

Spencer has been the primary recruiter on five of Florida’s commitments and has played a secondary role in the recruitment of two others. He’s directly responsible for the additions of No. 70 [autotag]Kelby Collins[/autotag], No. 145 [autotag]Will Norman[/autotag], No. 205 [autotag]Isaiah Nixon[/autotag], No. 218 [autotag]Kamran James[/autotag] and four-star [autotag]Gavin Hill[/autotag]. Despite the battery of four-stars committed to Florida thanks to Spencer, he ranks fourth among defensive line recruiters in the country. Clemson‘s Nick Eason, Notre Dame‘s Al Washington and Alabama‘s Freddie Roach are all ranked above Spencer in ascending order.

Still, it’s clear that coach Chaos’ stint in the NFL paid off, and he’s once again at the top of the recruiting game. Florida has the potential to bring in the strongest defensive line classes in the upcoming cycle, assuming all commitments put pen to paper during one of the signing periods.

Colbert has been the primary on five recruits as well, all of whom will play receiver for UF. No. 78 [autotag]Aidan Mizell[/autotag] leads the group and should be paired with No. 142 [autotag]Eugene Wilson III[/autotag] to do some damage. Four-stars [autotag]Andy Jean[/autotag] and [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag] round out the blue-chip names in the class and three-star [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag] adds some depth to the class. And there’s potential to add more receivers to the group.

The only other receivers coach ranked higher by 247Sports is Ohio State‘s Brian Hartline, who has brought in four recruits that average a 96.48 grade. The next receivers coach on the list is Texas’ Brennan Marion at No. 20 and three commits under his belt.

Florida’s other co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] is ranked No. 31 and the only other Gator inside the top 100. Cornerbacks coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag] should be next to break that threshold if he can add one of his high-profile targets. Currently ranked No. 101, adding either four-star [autotag]Dijon Johnson[/autotag] or five-star [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] should do the trick for Raymond.

Outside linebackers coach [autotag]Mike Peterson[/autotag] is ranked No. 111, offensive coordinator and offense line coach [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] is ranked No. 188, inside linebacker coach [autotag]Jay Bateman[/autotag] is No. 190, tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag] is No. 240 and running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] rounds out the group at No. 338 on the list. Assistant offensive line coach [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] received secondary credits for four commitments and ranks No. 259 as well.

Florida football on top for this 4-star in-state 2024 safety

The Gators are doing everything right so far in the recruitment of 2024 four-star safety Brayshon Williams.

Heading into the fall, the Florida Gators sit atop the recruitment of 2024 four-star safety [autotag]Brayshon Williams[/autotag].

The Lakeland High defensive back has already been to campus three times, and he’s planning his next trip to the Swamp, according to Gators Online. Williams will be in town for Florida’s season opener against the Utah Utes on Sept. 3.

Transferring from Lake Gibson to Lakeland has only helped Florida’s chances with Williams. Former Gators defensive back Ahmad Black is his position coach, and the school has served as a bit of a pipeline to UF recently.

“For starters, it’s kind of like tradition now because I got to Lakeland High School (laughter),” Williams said to Gators Online. “Coach P-Toney ([autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag]) in my eyes is one of the best coaches in college football. I see a better person in me getting coached by P-Toney. Lastly, the home vibe I get there in Gainesville. It feels like I belong.”

While the Gators are leading right now, that won’t stop other Power Five programs from pursuing a recruit ranked inside the top 100 nationally by On3. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has focused on keeping in-state talent at home, and On3 ranks Williams No. 16 overall among Florida recruits.

He has offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M among others. Florida currently leads the pack with a 40.9% chance on On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, followed by the Hurricanes with 12.7%, the Bulldogs with 10.9% and the Aggies with 9.1%.

Florida looks to snag this 2024 defensive back recruit from FSU

Can the Gators flip this 2024 FSU commit? Billy Napier is certainly giving it a shot.

Florida football’s recruiting efforts have been the topic of attention of late after a late July push that saw the team rise meteorically in the rankings thanks to the commitment of a few of the best that the prep level has to offer. While the Gators are mostly focused on players who are still looking for their collegiate destination, [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. are not shying away from plundering their opponents as well.

Among those the program is looking to poach is four-star safety [autotag]Jordan Pride[/autotag] out of the renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, who is currently committed to the Florida State Seminoles. The multi-sport athlete gave his word to FSU back on July 3 but nothing is set in stone quite yet.

The 6-foot-1.5-inch, 175-pound defensive back joined in on Florida’s big recruiting weekend and came away intrigued by what Napier has cooking in the Swamp. “They always treat me like I’m a king,” Pride told Gators Online. “They like my length and how fast I move at my height. Also, my ball skills. They said I’m a ball hawk on the field.”

Florida’s head coach has taken the lead in the rising junior’s recruitment with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] also carrying a load in the efforts to flip the young student-athlete. After a courtship that dates back to his visit for the Tennessee Volunteers game last season, he finally received an offer from the Gators on June 6 but UF’s Tallahassee rivals won out. For now.

It comes as no surprise that the in-state safety’s talents are a coveted asset, with Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, Miami Hurricanes, Kentucky Wildcats, Michigan State Spartans and Mississippi State Bulldogs among many vying for his commitment. No official visits have been made nor have any dates been set as of yet, but the highly-sought recruit will get his chance to sample the college football platter this upcoming season.

Pride is ranked No. 74 overall and No. 8 at his position in his class nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 107 and 11, respectively.

2024 4-star safety receives ‘dream’ offer from Florida

Jarvis Boatwright Jr. recently received a dream offer from his childhood team, the Florida Gators.

A highly regarded in-state 2024 prospect finally got the offer he wanted since he was a child.

[autotag]Jarvis Boatwright Jr[/autotag]. told On3’s Corey Bender that his recent Florida offer was his childhood dream. The 6-foot-2-inch, 175-pound safety out of Clearwater, Florida, received his offer while on an unofficial visit to Gainesville at the end of July. When talking to Bender about why UF meant so much to him, Boatwright mentioned how Florida felt like a family. Seeing high-level players come out of Gainesville — so close to home as well — played a big factor in why the Gators’ offer meant so much to him.

Boatwright didn’t work out for Florida’s coaching staff, but rather spent his time getting to know the personnel. He even got one-on-one time with Gators co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag], someone Boatwright will spend a lot of time with if he suits up for the Orange and Blue.

In addition to Florida, Boatwright has taken visits to UCF, FSU and South Carolina. The list of programs that will be fighting for his services is long, including top programs such as Georgia, LSU, Miami, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and many more.

Boatwright expects to be back on Florida’s campus — the school he says is at the top of his recruitment — for some games this fall. Along with his football reasons, Boatwright says that the university’s physical therapy program is another reason why the Gators are at the top of his shortlist, a program that UF claims has a 100% success rate in landing a job after graduation.

Boatwright is considered the No. 21 Safety in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Consensus.

2024 top-100 recruit enjoys first participating in Friday Night Lights

Getting a chance to work hands-on with the Florida coaching staff could help the Gators’ chances at landing 4-star defensive back Jaylen Lawrence.

The Florida Gators coaching staff got a chance to work with plenty of the top recruits in the class of 2024 at the team’s Friday Night Lights camp, and one of the more prominent names to stop by the Swamp was four-star safety [autotag]Jaylen Heyward[/autotag].

The Gators offered Heyward a scholarship following his first unofficial visit to the school in March, but a big part of his decision will be which coaching staff he believes can develop him the best and prepare him for a hopeful NFL career. Heyward received the coaching he desired on Friday, according to his interview with 247Sports, and it almost had him staying in town an extra day.

“They (Florida) showed me a good time,” Heyward said. “I wanted to stay for the cookout but I had to go to FSU the next day. A big part of my visit there was camping at Friday Night Lights. It was good to see what Coach PT ([autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag]) and Coach (Corey) Raymond had to show me in just the little bit of time I had with them.”

Toney has been Heyward’s main contact at UF but defensive analyst [autotag]Jamar Chaney[/autotag] and tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag] are also helping recruit him. Those efforts are paying off, and Billy Napier‘s obvious mission to keep the best in the state of Florida at home sits well with Heyward.

“I love the way they are recruiting me. I feel like the last staff didn’t do a good job recruiting in-state, but the way Coach Napier is recruiting everything now, he wants to make sure everyone stays home at Florida. I think he’s doing an amazing job with that and I like it. He’s trying to bring the culture back to The Swamp.”

Heyward cut his list down to 12 schools back in June and a few are beginning to separate themselves from the pack. Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee and UCF have done well so far, but he says the real test will be who reaches out on September 1 when coaches can contact him. He hopes to make his decision by next summer.

Heyward is ranked No. 44 in the class of 2024 on the 247Sports composite and is No. 5 among safeties in the class. He’s being recruited as a defensive back and worked on the outside more during FNL, so he could become a cornerback for UF if he chooses to commit.

This blue-chip defensive lineman close to making his decision

Billy Napier and Co. should know soon whether they won out for this blue-chipper’s talents or not.

Florida football is coming off its biggest recruiting event of the summer having conducted its Friday Night Lights and team cookout events last weekend. The affairs brought many of the top prep prospects across three classes to the Swamp as [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and Co. rolled out the red carpet for the burgeoning teenagers.

Among those in attendance was four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Kelby Collins[/autotag] out of Gardendale (Alabama), who got a second taste of the new staff’s cooking after an official visit back in June. According to Swamp247’s Blake Alderman, the Gators made a solid impression upon the 6-foot-5-inch, 280-pound trench warrior during his recent stop.

“It was real good,” Collins said. “I got a chance to get close with some of the other recruits there. I was glad I got down there. Really the biggest highlight for me was getting down and hanging with the recruits. I got to see the new facility they have. They should be moving into it in the next couple of weeks, but it looks crazy.”

Co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag] has spearheaded the recruitment of the rising senior, while assistant for college personnel and on-campus recruiting [autotag]Chase Clark[/autotag], along with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag], and defensive line graduate assistant [autotag]Kali James[/autotag] have also made significant contributions to the effort. Together, they have constructed a vision for how Collins’ talents would be best utilized in Gainesville.

“They want me to be a defensive end for them, but they also want to move me around. They said I can move inside on the defensive line or even move outside and stand up. They want me to play all over. I am feeling like a priority for them. I like the fact they want me to be versatile like that. I feel like it makes it better for me in the long run. They tell me they need me there. They just stress it bad how they need me.”

Despite the positivity conveyed in the young recruit’s words, he still has a tough choice ahead of him and has not yet set a firm decision date. Florida is also fighting against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks and Oklahoma Sooners for the defensive lineman’s commitment. However, he does expect that decision to be made sometime soon.

“Hopefully in the next few weeks,” he predicted. “I just am looking at these relationships, how early I can play, and just the place I feel at home the most.”

Collins is ranked No. 70 overall and No. 6 at his position in his class nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 60 and 7, respectively. The Tide are out in front of the other schools on On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine with an 89.9% chance of landing him, while the ‘Dawgs are second at 3.3% and Gators third at 2.4%.

Florida hosted this top-100 DB during a busy recruiting weekend

Could Billy Napier be looking to flip another blue-chip recruit? Dijon Johnson, a four-star defensive back committed to Ohio State, was in town for Friday Night Lights.

The Florida Gators are in the middle of their busiest recruiting weekend of the summer right now as Friday Night Lights and the team cookout take place. The visitors’ list heading into the weekend was long and filled with blue-chip talent, but there were a few names that showed up unexpectedly.

One of those names is four-star defensive back [autotag]Dijon Johnson[/autotag] out of Wharton High (Tampa, Florida). Johnson, or “Mustard” as he’s affectionately called, committed to Ohio State in April, but he’s clearly still taking a look at other programs. The expectation was for him to pop up at the Miami recruiting cookout on Saturday, but Johnson told 247Sports that he was staying in town for Florida’s cookout instead.

This is the second trip Johnson has made to UF within the week. He and his dad were on campus to meet with cornerback coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag]. He could be seen spending most of his time with Raymond or co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag]. The dead period ended on Monday and starts back up in August.

There’s no guarantee that Johnson backs off his pledge to OSU, but things look shaky at best right now with that commitment and Florida is primed to swoop in if he does change his mind. It also seems like this is one of the recruits Florida will have a leg up on against Miami, but that could (and has) changed in a heartbeat with other players this cycle.

The Gators already have a trio of in-state four-star defensive backs in the class, Osceola cornerback [autotag]Ja’Keem Jackson[/autotag] (Kissimmee), West Orange (Winter Garden) safety [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag] and Bartram Trail (Jacksonville)cornerback [autotag]Sharif Denson[/autotag].

Johnson would be the highest ranked of the bunch at No. 93 overall on the 247Sports composite. He’s also ranked No. 10 among cornerbacks in the class of 2023.
