Packers activate DL Dean Lowry, RB Patrick Taylor off PUP list ahead of training camp

The Packers are getting back DL Dean Lowry and RB Patrick Taylor from the PUP list to start training camp on Wednesday.

Defensive lineman Dean Lowry and running back Patrick Taylor enjoyed short stays on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp for the Green Bay Packers.

General manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed that both Lowry and Taylor would be activated from the PUP list and be available for Wednesday’s opening practice of camp.

Lowry sat out for most of the offseason workout program with an injury. It’s unclear what injury Taylor was dealing with to start camp.

Lowry enjoyed a career season in 2021, tallying a career-high 42 pressures, per Pro Football Focus. He will be an important part of a deep and talented defensive line featuring Pro Bowler Kenny Clark, veteran addition Jarran Reed and first-round pick Devonte Wyatt.

Taylor, who scored his first career touchdown in the season finale against Detroit in January, is a leading candidate to be the No. 3 running back while Kylin Hill (ACL) remains on the PUP list to start training camp. He is competing with undrafted rookies BJ Baylor and Tyler Goodson.

The Packers are also bringing back rookie linebacker Caliph Brice and offensive tackle Caleb Jones, who were both put on the non-football injury list last week.

Packers want three things out of RB Patrick Taylor entering Year 3

RBs coach Ben Sirmans wants more physicality, urgency and authority out of Patrick Taylor entering his third season with the Packers.

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Ben Sirmans wants three things from Patrick Taylor entering his third season: More physicality, more urgency and more authority as a runner.

Sirmans said he saw flashes of all three when Taylor rushed for 53 yards, caught two passes and scored his first career NFL touchdown during the second half of the Packers’ Week 18 loss to the Lions in Detroit in January.

“He was running with more authority, and that’s something we talked about in previous games,” Sirmans said in May. “I think you saw glimpses of that (in Detroit).”

Taylor will enter training camp competing to be the No. 3 running back behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. Kylin Hill, last year’s seventh-round pick, is still recovering from a torn ACL and may start camp on the PUP list.

If Hill isn’t ready, the job is Taylor’s to lose.

Sirmans believes Taylor’s strong end to the 2021 season will provide some momentum entering training camp, which kicks off in late July.

“That’s the biggest thing I saw that he does have the ability to play more physical, play with more urgency and play with more authority, and I think he’s going to piggyback on that going into this season,” Sirmans said.

Taylor is 6-2 and almost 220 pounds, giving him the size of a physically imposing runner. In games against the Lions and Minnesota Vikings to end last season, Taylor created six missed tackles and averaged over 3.5 yards after first contact, per Pro Football Focus. His 17 carries created only 71 total yards, but 61 of the yards came after contact, and he created two runs over 10 yards.

On one play against the Lions, Taylor put his foot in the ground and lowered his shoulder near the sideline at the end of the run. Sirmans said the ensuing collision created an eruption on the Packers sideline. It’s that type of physicality, urgency and authority that the Packers want more of in 2022.

Getting healthy should also help.

Taylor signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. He missed his entire rookie season while recovering from a foot injury, but he’s now entering his second full season being healthy in Green Bay.

“He looks like he’s moving around a lot better during OTAs and in Phase 2,” Sirmans said. “For him, just getting his feet wet last year, coming off the injuries from the first year, so I think he’s got a better feel for what’s going on, and that’s going to help him.”

Packers RB Patrick Taylor scores first career NFL touchdown

Patrick Taylor’s first career touchdown in the NFL brought the Packers to within 24-22 of the Lions on Sunday in the season finale.

Green Bay Packers running back Patrick Taylor scored his first career touchdown on Sunday against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Taylor, now in his second season, plunged in from 1-yard out to bring the Packers to within two points of the Lions in the fourth quarter. The Packers failed on the two-point conversion, making the score 24-22.

Taylor has rushed 10 times for 49 yards in the contest.

On the score, Taylor followed the blocks of Dominique Dafney and Equanimeous St. Brown off the right side to find the end zone.

The Packers signed Taylor as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. He missed his entire rookie season while recovering from a foot injury suffered during his final collegiate season.

Taylor began the season on the practice squad but was elevated to the active roster on Nov. 4 after rookie Kylin Hill suffered a season-ending injury. He is playing in his ninth career game on Sunday. He came into the contest with 10 career carries for 36 yards.

Packers sign RB Patrick Taylor to roster, QB Blake Bortles to practice squad

The Green Bay Packers added necessary depth at quarterback and running back on Thursday.

The Green Bay Packers added necessary depth at quarterback and running back on Thursday. The team signed running back Patrick Taylor from the practice squad to the active roster and signed quarterback Blake Bortles to replace Taylor on the practice squad.

Taylor, who has been in Green Bay since the start of the 2020 season, will take over for Kylin Hill as the No. 3 running back behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon and could be the primary kickoff returner. He carried 23 times for 89 yards over three preseason games and has been on the practice squad all year.

Bortles, who was signed in May and cut in late July, returns to the Packers to provide Jordan Love with a backup on Sunday in Kansas City. Both Aaron Rodgers and Kurt Benkert are on the COVID-19 reserve list, which forced the Packers to add a quarterback. Bortles’ experience in the offense made the decision an easy one. He’ll be elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster on Sunday.

The Packers did not add any player to the COVID-19 reserve list on Thursday. Receiver Davante Adams was removed from the list and returned to the team.

Packers RB Patrick Taylor passes physical, comes off PUP list

Patrick Taylor can finally re-join the running back competition at Green Bay Packers training camp.

Patrick Taylor can finally re-join the running back competition at Green Bay Packers training camp.

Taylor, a first-year player from Memphis, passed his physical and came off the PUP list on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

Taylor began training camp on the PUP list. Monday was his first practice with the team. He must now make up for lost time in a roster battle with Dexter Williams and rookie Kylin Hill. The Packers are trying to find a third running back to team with Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon, meaning a spot on the 53-man roster is open.

Taylor, 23, went undrafted last year. He spent all of last season on the non-football injury list while recovering from a foot injury sustained during his final collegiate season.

Taylor is a big back at 6-2 and 217 pounds with a well-rounded game. Finally healthy, he’ll be an intriguing young player to watch this summer as he attempts to win a position battle and secure a roster spot during camp and the preseason.

Packers place RB Patrick Taylor on PUP list to start training camp

The Packers running back will begin his second season in Green Bay on the physically unable to perform list.

The long road back to the field for Green Bay Packers running back Patrick Taylor has hit another bump in the road.

The team placed Taylor on the physically unable to perform list on Saturday.

Taylor, an undrafted free agent from Memphis who signed with the Packers last year, spent the entire 2020 season on the non-football injury list while recovering from a foot injury suffered during his final collegiate season.

It’s unclear if Taylor’s injury now is related to the foot injury. He participated with the team during the offseason workout program.

The Packers only have five running backs on the roster including Taylor. Without him, the team would be left with Aaron Jones, A.J. Dillon, Dexter Williams and rookie Kylin Hill as the four running backs to start training camp.

It’s possible the Packers will add another running back to the roster in the coming days to make sure they have enough numbers at the position for practices.

Taylor joins tight end Josiah Deguara (PUP), linebacker Isaiah McDuffie (non-football injury) and linebacker Ray Wilborn (COVID-19 reserve) among the Packers players unable to participate during the start of camp.

Taylor (6-2, 217) rushed for 2,884 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns over 45 games at Memphis.
