Patrick Surtain says if another team called he would’ve stayed with Dolphins

He has an affinity for the school.

The Miami Dolphins have lost a number of coaches this offseason, but defensive assistant Patrick Surtain’s departure was the only one that they didn’t have a part in.

Surtain left Miami Gardens in January to join the Florida State Seminoles’ coaching staff as their secondary coach. In three years, Surtain has jumped from high school head coach to NFL defensive assistant and now to positional coach at the college level.

However, it’s not that he was just looking to move on from the Dolphins. Speaking on if he would’ve left his position for another job, he was quite frank.

“Probably not,” Surtain said. “ It’s still the state of Florida. Like if Minnesota called me, I would stay with the Dolphins. If Washington or Washington State would’ve called, I would’ve stayed with the Dolphins.

“But Tallahassee, what, five hours away from home? With an iconic program like Florida State that’s getting back to the glory days, that was the perfect situation. So, lightning happened in the bottle twice with the Dolphins and then Florida State. I’m ready to leave my mark on the program.”

With defensive coordinator Josh Boyer getting fired after the Surtain news was reported, it’s unclear whether or not he would’ve been kept around on Vic Fangio’s staff, but it’s great to see the legendary cornerback continuing to develop in his coaching career.

At the rate he’s going, he’ll be a defensive coordinator soon.

The Pro Bowl will be much more than just a flag football game this year. Here is the full schedule of events.

As the 2023 season winds to its conclusion, the NFL’s best will have one last chance to showcase their skills in front of fans at the 2023 Pro Bowl Games in Las Vegas this week.

The Pro Bowl’s two-day schedule will feature several events from golf to kicker tic-tac-toe, ending on Sunday with the first-ever flag football games.

Below is the event schedule, which will begin on Thursday, Feb. 2nd and continue on Sunday, Feb. 5. All Pro Bowl coverage begins on ESPN starting at 7:00 pm on Thursday.

This year, the Denver Broncos will be represented by All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain.

Thursday, February 2

  • Epic Pro Bowl Dodgeball: A multi-round tournament of classic dodgeball featuring four teams of five players that begins with the offenses and defenses from both conferences squaring off and culminates in an AFC vs. NFC showdown. In the first match, the AFC offense will face the AFC defense to determine the AFC winner. In the second game, the NFC offense squares off with the NFC defense to determine the NFC winner. In the finales, the AFC winner and NFC winner meet to determine which conference will earn three points.
  • Lightning Round: New this year, each conference will select 16 players to compete in a three-part elimination challenge that will leave one player left at the end to earn three points for his conference. In the first event, “Lightning Round – Splash Catch,” teammate pairings from each conference will toss water balloons back and forth from increasing distances. Each tandem that completes all of their tosses advances to the second phase. In part two, “Lightning Round – High Stakes,” advancing players will attempt to catch punts from a JUGS machine to earn a place representing their conference in the final round of the competition. In the final part of the challenge, “Lightning Round – Thrill of the Spill,” the remaining players from each conference will aim at targets attached to a bucket hanging above the head of an opposing conference’s coach. The first team to dump the bucket on the opposing coach wins and earns three points for his conference
  • Longest Drive: Four players from each conference will compete in a challenge to drive a golf ball the furthest distance off a tee. Each player will get three swings and the player that drives the furthest within the boundaries on each side of the fairway will win three points for his conference
  • Precision Passing presented by EA SPORTS Madden NFL 23 Mobile: Each of the conference’s three quarterbacks will battle it out in a one-minute accuracy competition, as they attempt to accumulate points by hitting as many targets as possible. The quarterback with the highest individual score among all participants is the winner and earns three points for his conference. There are a total of 10 targets that are either static or attached to robotic dummies and drones, each worth a different amount, ranging from one to five points. There is also a Long Toss Bucket 60 yards away that is worth 10 points.
  • Best Catch presented by Uber Eats (First Round): Two players from each conference will compete in a best catch competition, showing off their creativity, inventiveness and talent. In the first round on Thursday, the players will showcase their best receptions in highlight reels shot at iconic venues around Las Vegas. Fans will vote online to determine their favorite catch by a player in each conference, and the players with the highest votes will compete in the finals on Sunday.

Sunday, February 5

  • Best Catch presented by Uber Eats (Finale): On Sunday, the top vote getters from each conference will compete head-to-head, as they perform in front of panel of celebrity judges. The pass-catcher who accumulates the highest score from the judges will be determined the winner.
  • Gridiron Gauntlet: A side-by-side relay race showcasing strength, speed and agility, six players from each conference will compete to see who finishes first and wins three points for his team. The four-part Gauntlet, each segment 40-yards in length, includes a series of breakaway walls, a section of climbing over walls and under tables, a tire run and a blocking sled carrying a Legend coach across the finish line.
  • Kick Tac Toe: Each team’s kicker, punter and long snapper compete in a giant Tic-Tac-Toe competition to showcase their respective skills. The first team to complete a connecting line of three squares or hit five squares total will be declared the winner and earn three points for his conference.
  • Move The Chains: Four teams (two teams from each conference) will compete side by side in a weighted wall pull that will showcase their strength, speed and ingenuity. Each team of five players is responsible for pulling a wall, loaded up with heavy weights, 10-yards as quickly as possible using first-down chains. The winner of the best-of-three playoff will earn three points for their conference.

Peyton Manning (AFC) and Eli Manning (NFC) will serve as coaches for the Pro Bowl, and their funny commercials have fans excited for the upcoming week of activities.

Justin Simmons, Patrick Surtain make ESPN’s list of NFL’s most valuable players in 2022

Broncos DBs Justin Simmons and Patrick Surtain made ESPN’s list of the NFL’s 100 most valuable players in 2022.

A recent article written by ESPN’s Seth Walder ranked the top 100 most valuable players of the 2022 NFL season, and two Denver Broncos joined the list.

Unsurprisingly, both players were on the defensive side of the ball. Safety Justin Simmons and cornerback Patrick Surtain both made Walder’s list.

Surtain was ranked the 28th most valuable player, while Simmons came in at 64.

Surtain may not have had spectacular numbers, but that was for a good reason. “Measuring defensive backs partly requires evaluating the absence of action because deterring targets is a skill,” Walder said. “That’s exactly what Surtain did. With a 12.5% target rate that was a league-low among corners, no one forced opposing QB’s to look another direction more than Surtain.”

With that being said, Surtain has quickly become the player the Broncos hoped he would become when he was drafted with the ninth overall pick in 2021. Surtain is typically tapped to cover the opponent’s best receiver game in and game out.

Simmons also continued to be a mainstay in the Denver defense. Simmons led all Broncos with six interceptions and three forced fumbles. In 12 games, Simmons also totaled 69 tackles and broke up seven passes.

Denver’s secondary is in good hands.

NFL AP All-Pro First and Second Teams feature six former Crimson Tide players

Alabama is well-represented! Check out which former Crimson Tide stars made it.

If you sit down on any given Sunday to watch NFL football, the odds are you will see a former Alabama Crimson Tide player making an impact.

As well as recruiting the right players, Nick Saban has proved that his player development is second to none and he has turned Tuscaloosa into an NFL factory. The Tide has sent 41 players to the NFL via the first round of the draft in that time, including a first-round selection in 14 straight years, with no end in sight.

Year after year the Tide funnels stars into the NFL, and in 2022 they shined the brightest they ever have. Six different players were recognized on the NFL AP All-Pro First and Second Teams, out of 44 eligible spots.

Joe Burrow calls Pat Surtain II the best CB in the league

22-year-old Pat Surtain is the best corner in the NFL according to Joe Burrow

Despite being only 22-years old, [autotag]Patrick Surtain[/autotag] II has quickly proved himself to be one, if not the best corners in the NFL. When the Denver Broncos used the No. 9 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft on Surtain, I am not sure even they knew how good he was going to be.

After earning All-Rookie accolades in 2021, Surtain has stepped his game up in 2022 with a Pro Bowl appearance as well as being selected to the First Team All-Pro by both the AP voters as well as players.

Through his first two years in the league, the former Crimson Tide star has only given up 1,015 yards as the primary defender. He has also only given up seven touchdowns while forcing six interceptions.

Other players in the league are starting to notice the lockdown corner as well. Bengals and former LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow had high praise for Surtain on Colin Cowherd‘s podcast saying, “I think he’s the best..he’s tough.”

After leading the Bengals to a Super Bowl in only his second year, Joey B has become one of the most beloved players in the league, so his praise comes in high regards.

Three former Crimson Tide players named to inaugural NFL Players’ All-Pro Team

NFL players voted All-Pro team recognized three former Crimson Tide members

After years of being decided by the media and everyone else, the NFL players wanted some say in recognizing players on All-Pro teams. So, this year, the NFL players voted on their own All-Pro team for the first time ever.

Three former members of the Crimson Tide made the inaugural list including Josh Jacobs, Patrick Surtain and Minkah Fitzpatrick.

In a contract year with the Las Vegas Raiders, Jacobs did himself a massive favor by leading the NFL in rushing yards with 1,653. To be recognized as the lone running back is a massive honor and recognition for Jacobs.

Although the year in Denver was a massive disappointment, the Broncos defense was arguably the best in the league. A large reason for that is lock down corner Patrick Surtain who essentially eliminates one side of the field.

Finally, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Minkah Fitzpatrick, always seems to find himself on these types of lists as the best free safety in football. He is a complete X factor for the Steelers defense and they don’t even look like the same team without him.

It is very cool to see that the NFL piers think so highly of former Bama players as well and it will be fun to see if they can get four onto the list next year.

Dolphins assistant coach Patrick Surtain to leave for Florida State job

He spent just one season with Miami, as a coach.

This past offseason, the Miami Dolphins brought in former NFL players Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison as a defensive assistant and cornerbacks coach/pass-game specialist, respectively, on Josh Boyer’s crew.

However, ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Surtain is leaving the team after just one season to become Florida State’s new secondary coach. He’ll replace defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson, who recently became the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas.

Surtain will likely continue coaching with Miami throughout their playoff run, which begins with a wild-card matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon.
