Video: Will Bellator 301 be the promotion’s curtain call?

Will there be a Bellator 302? Our “Spinning Back Clique” breaks down what could be the final event in Bellator 301.

If Bellator 301 is the final event for the promotion, there are some solid matchups to go out on.

The event taking place at Wintrust Arena in Chicago brings a pair of title fights along with a few other intriguing matchups. In the main event, [autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] puts his welterweight title on the line against [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag]. In the co-feature, [autotag]Sergio Pettis[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] in a bantamweight title unification bout.

Also on the card is a heated rivalry matchup between [autotag]Danny Sabatello[/autotag] and former interim bantamweight champ [autotag]Raufeon Stots[/autotag]. Former featherweight champion A.J. McKee also is in action against Sidney Outlaw. Rounding out the main card is a lightweight grand prix semifinal bout between Patricky Freire and Alexander Shabliy.

These are solid matchups on paper, but the event doesn’t seem to have the same buzz around it as the promotion’s previous event. Is it because the promotion’s future beyond this event is uncertain? Will there be a Bellator 302?

Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and Brian “Goze” Garcia answered those questions with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

Patchy Mix laser-focused on Sergio Pettis at Bellator 301, not resting on million-dollar laurels

Interim bantamweight champ Patchy Mix has just enough confidence to be dangerous against Sergio Pettis.

CHICAGO – When he knocked out Raufeon Stots to win $1 million and Bellator’s bantamweight grand prix, [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] should have exploded in the confidence department.

And maybe he did. But if that’s the case, he’s certainly not falling back on it heading into the next most important fight of his career. Mix, Bellator’s interim 135-pound champion said he has to look at his fight against the champ, Sergio Pettis, as if it’s from scratch.

“After the past three performances, I go back and always evolve and add new things to my game,” Mix told MMA Junkie and other media members at the pre-fight media day for Bellator 301. “I’m more confident now than ever. Ever since I knocked out Stots, I’ve been in the gym training nonstop. … This is a big name and a big opportunity, so I’m only thinking about this fight. As far as I’m concerned, I’m 0-0. After Friday, I’ll be 1-0.”

Mix (18-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) talked abouthis bantamweight title unification fight against champ Pettis (23-5 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) and more at the pre-fight media day for Bellator 301.

Check out Mix’s full interview in the video above ahead of the event, which takes place Friday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Bellator 301’s Patchy Mix: Sergio Pettis ‘most dangerous opponent I’ve ever fought’

Patchy Mix is taking Sergio Pettis very seriously ahead of their bantamweight title unification bout at Bellator 301 in Chicago.

[autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] is taking [autotag]Sergio Pettis[/autotag] very seriously.

Interim bantamweight champion Mix (18-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) faces undisputed champ Pettis (23-5 MMA, 9-5 BMMA) in a title unification bout that co-headlines Bellator 301 on Nov. 17 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

This will mark Mix’s second undisputed title opportunity after falling short to Juan Archuleta in 2020. Mix has since won five straight en route to winning the bantamweight grand prix with a knockout of Raufeon Stots. Although his streak includes wins over Kyoji Horiguchi, Magomed Magomedov, and Stots, he views Pettis as his toughest test to date.

“I fought for this belt before. I lost it against Juan Archuleta (on) Sept. 12, 2020, and I’m here with vengeance,” Mix told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m here fully prepared this time. It’s my fourth 25-minute fight in a row and I’m going to make it count.

“I’m fighting the most dangerous opponent I’ve ever fought in Sergio Pettis. He’s coming off a win over Patricio ”Pitbull’ (Freire), the guy that knocked out Michael Chandler. He’s dangerous as hell right now. He’s just entering in his prime, just turned 30 years old – it’s such a dangerous fight.”

Pettis has also racked up an impressive resume with wins over Archuleta, a knockout of Horiguchi, and most recently a title defense against arguably the promotion’s best fighter Patricio Freire. Mix has finished four of his past five opponents, and hopes he can add Pettis to that list.

“I’m searching for that high,” Mix said. “I really want to finish this guy and I really want to feel what it feels like to take out someone the calibre of Sergio Pettis.”

Patchy Mix compares finishing ability to UFC’s Charles Oliveira: ‘I’m not a point fighter’

Patchy Mix views himself as one of the most prolific finishers in the sport.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] views himself as one of the most prolific finishers in the sport.

Mix (18-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) has finished 14 of his 18 professional wins – most recently knocking out Raufeon Stots to capture the interim bantamweight title and win the grand prix at Bellator 295 in April.

Most of Mix’s finishes have come by submission, and the 29-year-old is confident he would pose a serious threat to any bantamweight. He compared his finishing game to Charles Oliveira, the UFC’s all-time leader in stoppage wins.

“With me, I think I can dominate and finish anyone in the world,” Mix told MMA Junkie and others backstage. “So, I do what I do best. I think I could take anyone down, I think I could put anyone away on the floor. I’m a submission king. The only one that has similar finishes to me is Charles Oliveira in the last five years, and I have more than him.

“I’m a finisher on the ground, and I just showed I could knock people out. On the feet, on the mat, anywhere, I feel like I could finish either one. I would really like to test myself and when I do fight either one (Pettis or Freire), what I can promise is that I’m going out there to hunt them, and I’m going to go out there to finish them. I’m not a point fighter.”

Mix was in attendance for bantamweight champion Sergio Pettis’ (23-5 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) successful title defense against Patricio Freire this past Friday in the Bellator 297 headliner. The pair faced off after the fight, and Mix is now slated to unify his belt with undisputed champ Pettis in a date to be announced.

Ali Abdelaziz: ‘Gifted’ Patchy Mix arguably the best bantamweight in the world

Ali Abdelaziz agrees with Bellator champ Patchy Mix’s claim to being the No. 1 bantamweight.

Ali Abdelaziz agrees with [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] claiming stake as the No. 1 bantamweight in the world.

Abdelaziz, of Dominance MMA, represents Mix (18-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA), who captured the interim title by knocking out Raufeon Stots with a vicious knee in Round 1 at Bellator 295, winning the bantamweight grand prix and $1 million prize.

After the win, Mix declared himself as the best bantamweight in the sport –and Abdelaziz agrees.

“Right now, before Henry is competing (and he’s) back in the competition, I believe (Mix) is the best bantamweight on the planet,” Abdelaziz told The Schmo. “I see him training with guys. I seen what he do with guys. To welterweight, middleweight, featherweight, to flyweight. This guy, he’s so gifted. And he does one thing so well, you can’t stop it. He’s one of my hardest grapplers around and I grapple with many world champions. He’s just something special.

“And I think Bellator can claim now that they have the best 135-pounder in the world. They can. Because I think Patrick Mix is dangerous everywhere. And we seen what he did to Stots. Stots is one of the guys that’s hard to do things on and he knocked him out with a knee. This thing went viral and people finally realized that Patrick Mix arguably is the best bantamweight in the world.”

[lawrence-related id=2637667,2636619,2637223]

Mix will face the winner of the bantamweight title fight on June 16 at Bellator 297 between champion Sergio Pettis and featherweight champ Patricio Freire, who will look to win a title in a third division when he drops to 135 pounds.
