Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott is happy to no longer just be that.

McDermott has taken over duties as defensive coordinator following the departure of Leslie Frazier earlier this offseason. He adds that to his previous job as the team’s head coach as well. But wearing two hats is something he’s enjoying.

“I love it, honestly,” McDermott said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. “It feels good to be back with the guys. As a head coach, we coach but we don’t coach. A lot of the time is spent on things outside of coaching. It feels really good to be back in the weeds.”

Sean McDermott doesn’t like new kickoff rules: ‘I like the money to stay in my pocket’

Coach McD’s take on new kickoff rule:

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

The NFL has approved new kickoff rules. Sean McDermott does not appear to be a fan.

The Buffalo Bills head coach appeared on The Pat McAfee Show. When the topic of the rule change came up, McDermott said a lot without saying anything.

The update revolves around touchbacks. Now instead of kneeling the ball inside the end zone for one, if a returner does that, or calls a fair catch inside the 25-yard the ball will just simply be placed at the 25.

McDermott isn’t into it… it appears.

“I’d like the money to stay in my pocket,” McDermott said when asked for his feelings.

Former Saints Pro Bowler Jimmy Graham injured in Miami cycling accident

Former Saints Pro Bowler Jimmy Graham was injured after being struck by a car while cycling in Miami, but he expects to make a full recovery:

What’s Jimmy Graham up to these days? The fan-favorite former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowler is becoming something of a world traveler, having earned his pilot license and taken up small-aircraft flying as a hobby when he was still wearing black and gold. His old friend A.J. Hawk shared an update on the Pat McAfee Show this week, adding that Graham expects to make a full recovery after being injured in a Miami car accident.

Since shifting his focus away from football and towards other pursuits, Graham has taken up sailing and professional cycling, and Hawk says he’s currently training to sail around the world within the year. But those plans have been interrupted by a gnarly injury after being struck by a car while out on his bike.

Hawk described a nasty muscle injury to Graham’s calf, saying of the accident, “He was riding his bike down in Miami yesterday, or two days ago, he says a car turns left, hits him, takes him out. He says he did more damage to the car than the car did to him.”

Graham commented on the accident himself after Hawk broke the news, saying on Instagram that, “My body has certainly built up a callus for punishment over the years. I’ll be fine. Stay safe out there.”

Here’s to a speedy recovery for the former Saints standout. Graham won Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition with the Saints in 2011 and 2013, though a contract dispute frayed his relationship with the team and head coach Sean Payton, prompting his trade to the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. He bounced around the league for a few years after that, spending time with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, but he’s been out of the league since 2021. From the sounds of it, he’s determined to see the world and enjoy his retirement from pro football. We’ll wish him the best.

Report: Vikings were targeting Bryce Young in NFL draft

In an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Tom Pelissero reported that the Minnesota Vikings were targeting Alabama QB Bryce Young.

It was no secret that the Minnesota Vikings have a need at the quarterback position and according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings were trying to move up for a quarterback.

In an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Pelissero reported that the Vikings were trying to trade up to get Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.

“They were making calls about moving up very high in the draft,” Pelissero said. “But my understanding is that was for one player and that was Bryce Young who ended up going No. 1, and so there went any possibility for Minnesota to go get him.”

This report is contrary to what had been floating around right before the NFL draft. Those reports all said the Vikings were trying to move up for Anthony Richardson and that has been reported since draft weekend.

Regardless of which quarterback they were actually targeting, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is being aggressive in targeting a quarterback.

Brandon Beane discusses Dalton Kincaid pick on Pat McAfee Show (video)

Candid thoughts from Brandon Beane on dealing up for Dalton Kincaid in Round 1:

Following the conclusion of the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane joined “The Pat McAfee Show” to break Round 1 down.

The day ended with the Bills trading up for tight end Dalton Kincaid. As is usually the case on the McAfee show, the conversation was very candid.

Beane openly admitted what many figured. He did not think Kincaid would make it past the Dallas Cowboys.

Originally Buffalo was on the clock at No. 27 overall. Beane moved up to the 25th position in a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars because he, like many others, thought the Cowboys would have taken Kincaid at No. 26.

“I’ve done it historically,” Beane said. “It’s just my personality, I hate myself sometimes for giving up picks but I always say, ‘How disappointed am I going to be if I lose the guy?’ And I had a strong feeling that Dallas was going to take him if we didn’t go get him.”

Saints veterans Bradley Roby, Tyrann Mathieu respond to Adam Jones’ criticism

Saints defensive backs Bradley Roby and Tyrann Mathieu responded to Adam Jones’ criticism, pointing out their pass defense ranked second-best, not dead-last like he claimed:

It’s been a tough week for Adam “Pacman” Jones, who caught the ire of New Orleans Saints players when he mistakenly claimed they had the worst defense in the league last year during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. Among other things, he called out the Saints cornerbacks as some of the worst in the NFL.

And some of those players responded. Cornerback Bradley Roby acknowledged Jones as a friend on Twitter (laughing to their peer Casey Heyward that “Pac the homie he ain’t about to say anything,” after being corrected) but point out that the Saints pass defense ranked second-best in the league last year. Only the Philadelphia Eagles allowed fewer passing yards per game (171.6) than New Orleans (184.4).

Veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu chimed in, too, offering his own explanation for Jones’ bizarre misinformation. He suggested that Jones, like many outside observers, saw the Saints start out slow in 2022 and assumed that they “never really got the wins geauxing that we just threw in the towel.” That wasn’t the case, and they ended the year by winning three of their last four games.

For his part, Mathieu is expecting more wins to follow in 2023. We’ll see if Jones circles back to admit he got this wrong later or if he’ll just continue to ignore reality and substitute it with his own.

Adam Jones doubles down, gets more facts wrong while ripping Saints

Former NFL cornerback Adam Jones doubled down on his Saints criticism, misreading multiple box scores to claim the Saints lost games that they actually won:

Adam Jones doesn’t know when to quit. The former NFL cornerback made a fool of himself on “The Pat McAfee Show” this week, accusing the New Orleans Saints of being, among other things, the worst pass defense in the NFL (they ranked second-best in yards per game, to be clear). And Saints fans have been letting him have it on social media.

And the noise is getting to him. Jones redoubled his efforts to ignore the facts and the stats from last season to rip on the Saints, sharing a video from his official Twitter account in which he failed to accurately read the final score and identify the winner from several games in 2022.

“Let’s just look at this, y’all allowed 27 points against the Falcons, who was a subpar team,” Jones began, misreading the score from the Saints’ season-opening 27-26 win in Atlanta. He continued down the list, continuing to get scores wrong: “The Seahawks, you allowed 39 points. The Bengals, you allowed 30 points. To Arizona, you allowed 42 points. Let’s keep going, since you want to talk (expletive) about what I’m talking about.”

The Saints were the team that scored 39 points in their 39-32 win over Seattle. 12 of the Cardinals’ points in that game were scored on defensive interception returns, not their offense. Cincinnati averaged 26 points per game and was a Super Bowl contender who made it to the AFC title game. What does he think that proves?

“Y’all beat the Raiders, good, the whole organization got (expletive) fired,” Jones scoffed, apparently confusing the organizational turnover in Las Vegas from 2022 as something that happened after that game.

Former players can offer insight that no one else is positioned to match when it comes to talking about the NFL. But that isn’t what Jones is doing here. He’s just wrong and loud and misinforming fans. It’s a shame because someone with his platform could do a lot better than this. Maybe he’ll get something right next time.

Ted Karras has his eyes on a Super Bowl in Cincinnati

Teddy says the only goal is a Super Bowl.

Cincinnati Bengals center Ted Karras went on the “PatMcAfee Show” Tuesday and he was asked about winning a Super Bowl with Joe Burrow and the current team.

“Joey B’s a killer, and we are going to win one,” Karras said. “It’s all I can think about Pat, really. They’ve never won one in Cincinnati so we want to be the guys to do it. And Joey B, he’s the guy to do it.”

After only one season in Cincinnati, Karras believes that Burrow is special and that a Super Bowl-winning Bengals team is a sure thing with him leading the way.

If anyone knows what a championship team and quarterback look like, it’s Karras, who played with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on the teams that won Super Bowl LI and LII.

McAfee said that it seems inevitable that Burrow and the Bengals will win one at some point, saying that Burrow could be the “next Tom Brady.”

After two straight AFC Championship appearances, the Bengals are as close as ever to being in the Super Bowl, but all Bengals fans can do is wait and see if Karras and McAfee are right about getting over that hump.

Recapping Aaron Rodgers’ appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’

Everything to know from Aaron Rodgers’ highly-anticipated appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared live on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday.

Here’s a quick recap of the important things coming out of his highly-anticipated appearance:

– Rodgers said Wednesday would not be decision day. “We’re days past” decision day, Rodgers confirmed.

– Rodgers went through the full timeline with the Packers since 2020.

– Rodgers said the Packers told him he could return to play in Green Bay in 2023 but “something changed” following his darkness retreat. Coming out, he heard from players informing him he was being shopped in a trade.

– Rodgers said he went into the darkness at “90 percent retiring, 10 percent playing.”

– “Rodgers said “it was clear” the Packers were ready to move on coming out of the darkness.

– Rodgers said he wished there had been direct conversations from the team about wanting to move on right after the season.

– “No malice, no bitterness” for Packers. Says the last 10 days have been bittersweet.

– Said he had a “nice conversation” with the Jets during meeting in California.

– Rodgers confirmed he wants to keep playing in 2023, and he wants to do so for the Jets. “My intention is to play, and my intention is to play for the New York Jets.”

– “I have nothing but love in my heart for every Packer fan and everyone in the organization. My life is better because of my time in Green Bay”

– “They want to move on, they don’t want me to come back, that’s they’re ready to move on with Jordan. Jordan is going to be a great player…he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

– Answering a hypothetical question from A.J. Hawk, Rodgers said he felt everyone was ready to move on during the 2022 season. “Pretty obvious.”

– “No one wants to be the bad guy in this situation. Honestly, there isn’t a bad guy in this situation as long as everything gets resolved the right way.”

– Rodgers said he couldn’t envision a scenario where a trade with the Jets falls through and he returns to the Packers.

– Rodgers said he told Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini to lose his phone number when both texted him recently. He also dismissed his “wishlist” for the Jets.

– “I love you, Green Bay. Thank you. I’m as sad as some of you are, but we’ll meet again.”

– Rodgers didn’t say whether he would wear No. 12 with the Jets. He’s seen Joe Namath’s approval of him wearing the numbers. It’s a conversation for a different time.

– Rodgers said “quite a few other teams” besides the Jets were interested in trading for him. Strongly hints at the Raiders.

– Rodgers pointed to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as a big reason why he’s picking the Jets.

Daniel Jeremiah singles out the Saints as a good fit for Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah singles out the New Orleans Saints as a good fit for Tennessee quarterback prospect Hendon Hooker:

It didn’t take long for the New Orleans Saints to be linked to one of the most fascinating college prospects in the 2023 NFL draft. The Saints were one of a few teams reported to have had extensive contact with Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker, and he has a big fan in NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah.

“I don’t feel like there’s been enough talk about Hendon Hooker,” Jeremiah said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. “He’s a good player. I think with all the age and the injury, look, you should be thinking about things in terms of four and five years in the NFL. Everything can change. If you tell me right now I’m going to get four, five, six years of really above-average, borderline, close to elite quarterback play, take it. Who cares if the guy is older? Take it man.”

Jeremiah outlined Hooker’s positive attributes: “To me his tape was really, really good. He’s accurate, he’s big, he can move around. We’ll see where he ends up going. To me I think if he didn’t get hurt we’re talking about him as a first-round pick.”

Hooker transferred to Tennessee after three years of sporadic appearances in Virginia Tech’s lineup, and he lit up Rocky Top with the Vols’ high-flying passing attack. He threw for 6,080 yards and scored 58 touchdown passes against just 5 interceptions across 24 games, completing 68.8% of his pass attempts (and averaging an impressive 9.6 yards per completion). He also added 1,033 rushing yards and 15 touchdown runs before a non-contact knee injury cut him down on the road against South Carolina in mid-November.

He’s on track to receive medical clearance by training camp, though Hooker won’t be able to throw and work out at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. Still, as Jeremiah pointed out, he wouldn’t be picked for his immediate impact in 2023. This is a farsighted move.

“I feel great about him, I’m curious to see (where he goes), he’s an intriguing guy,” Jeremiah continued. “I put him in my top-50, I think he’s probably in that second-round range. But I’m looking at a team, the Saints, right? You’re picking in there and he’s better than anybody you’ve got in there. I’d take him over Andy Dalton at this point in time. We already know what Jameis Winston is, good or bad or whatever. I’d take a shot on (Hooker).”

We’ll see whether that’s a popular opinion come April, but there’s already plenty of eyes on Hooker and New Orleans. He’s a common pick in the second or third round for the Saints in the latest round of media mock drafts, which makes sense given the gulf between this year’s top prospects and where New Orleans is slotted to pick in the first round (at No. 29 overall). If the second round is a realistic range for Hooker to be picked, he could be someone to watch closely when the Saints are on the board again at No. 40.
