Freiermuth made an immediate impact as a red zone favorite for retired Steelers legend QB Ben Roethlisberger. The rookie tight end caught 60 passes and averaged 8.3 yards per reception, but 7 of his catches went for touchdowns. That’s what fantasy owners look for in the TE2 crop.

Once everyone has a starting tight end on their rosters, the need to grab a TE2 doesn’t have a big sense of urgency, but it is a necessity for everyone in a TE-mandatory league. In the area where players like Freiermuth are going (the 11th to 14th rounds), tight ends are dropping at a rate of approximately 1 per round.
As an early 13th-round pick in 10-player drafts, Freiermuth checks in behind Dawson Knox (Buffalo Bills) at 100.99 and Mike Gesicki (Miami Dolphins) art 114.65 and in front of players like Cole Kmet (Chicago Bears) at 122.12 and Hunter Henry (New England Patriots) at 136.46.

Where should you draft Freiermuth?
Freiermuth currently sits as the No. 12 tight end on draft boards and, as such is being selected to be a matchup play instead of a weekly starter. His 7 touchdowns were a sign that he is already adept at finding soft spots in defenses and catching the critical passes needed to help his offense.
Whether the regular quarterback for the Steelers turns out to be either Mitchell Trubisky or rookie Kenny Pickett, it shouldn’t impact Freiermuth’s production because a tight end is a new quarterback’s best friend. With Roethlisberger’s arm limitations in the final season of his career, Freiermuth was a safety valve target asked to move the chains. Considering a new look to the offense (and the loss of a slew of veteran receivers from last year), his chances to catch 70-80 passes look possible — ideal for a TE2 who may get pressed into service.
