Top 21 players for the Oklahoma Sooners entering 2021

As the Oklahoma Sooners get set to continue their reign atop the Big 12 and contend for a national title, here are the top 21 players for 2021.

Heading into the 2021 season, the Oklahoma Sooners have one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the country. On both sides of the ball, the Sooners have great players throughout the lineup that will make big impacts on Saturdays this fall.

On offense, the Sooners are led by Heisman Trophy front-runner Spencer Rattler and a high-powered passing attack. On defense, the Sooners have four guys that can create havoc in both the running game and rushing the passer.

This is a team that should be one of the more exciting teams to watch with their blend of big-play offense and suffocating defense. With just 15 days until kickoff, let’s take a look at the top 21 Oklahoma Sooners heading into 2021.

As the season approaches, where do the Sooners stand at safety?

Strong play in the secondary could be the tipping point in OU’s title hunt. Here’s how the Sooners stand at safety.

Defensive backs with position flexibility are a hot commodity with the roof of what is possible on offense repeatedly blown off in today’s college football. Modern offenses eagerly await opportunities to go up-tempo, dictating when and how defenses can make substitutions.

Coaches covet defenders who feel comfortable backpedaling from either side of the field. But the truth is most defenders have a preference. Rarer still is the DB with the body of a linebacker and the fluidity of a receiver.

Most of the “do it all” defensive backs are specialized when they land on an NFL roster. That’s why the difference between a safety and a corner is still relevant in today’s game.

With that said, let’s zoom in on the Sooners’ secondary and focus specifically on the safeties.

Oklahoma Sooners’ Safety Pat Fields named to Wuerffel Trophy watch list

Oklahoma Sooners Safety Pat Fields named to Wuerffel Trophy watch list.

Watch list season continues. Another Oklahoma Sooner was recognized. Senior safety Pat Fields was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list earlier this week and was honored for his contributions not only on the field but off it. He is one of 93 players in the running for the Wuerffel Trophy entering 2021. The winner will be announced on Dec. 9.

Fields would become the third Sooner to win the award, following Gabe Ikard (2013) and Ty Darlington (2015).

The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player that best combines outstanding community service with achievements both on and off the field. The inclusion in the compilation list is a testament to Fields’ leadership and character.

As a captain and cornerstone player on OU’s defense, Fields is often praised by both teammates and coaches for the standard of excellence that he sets. Seen as a role model by his peers, it is not a surprise to see his name on the list of players making an impact across college football.

On the field, Fields has accumulated 122 tackles donning Crimson and Cream in 30 career games. In 2020, he notched an interception and five passes defensed in Alex Grinch’s secondary.

Last season, Fields earned the Cotton Bowl’s Dan S. Petty Scholarship Award for exemplary academics, athletics, and character. He strives to make a difference between the hash marks on Saturdays and in the community. Well deserved placement on the watch list and a guy that is easy to root for.

Sooners safety Pat Fields named 2nd team Academic All-American

Pat Fields racked up another academic all-American award from the College Sports Information Directors of America’s preseason awards.

The Oklahoma Sooners continue to rack up preseason awards. This time it was on the academic side of things as Sooners’ safety Pat Fields was named a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America All-American second-team

Fields, a junior on the 2020 OU football squad, has compiled a 3.81 GPA while simultaneously pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting and a master’s degree in accounting. He is projected to complete both in December 2021. He was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 Team last month. -OU Athletics Dept press release

Pat Fields was selected to the Big 12 Academic first-team in 2019 and 2020 and is set to complete both his Bachelor’s in Business Administration in Accounting and Masters in Accounting degrees in December per SoonerSports.com

Fields is projected to start again at safety for the Sooners after playing in 10 games last year for Oklahoma.

One of the leaders in the secondary, Pat Fields has been a steady part of Alex Grinch’s defensive alignment. Playing solid coverage and being tremendous in run support.

Going into his fourth season with the team, the redshirt Junior looks to build upon a season that saw him collect his first career interception and post the best passer rating against (74.4) and completion percentage when targeted (53.3%) of his Sooners career per Pro Football Focus.

If Pat Fields is able to build off his impressive 2020, that would be a huge boon for and Oklahoma Sooners’ defense that is a key to the team’s national championship hopes.

Oklahoma football notebook: Pat Fields, Creed Humphrey, Ronnie Perkins, Rhamondre Stevenson talk Wednesday

Ahead of Oklahoma’s matchup with Kansas, Pat Fields, Creed Humphrey, Ronnie Perkins, and Rhamondre Stevenson met with the media on Wednesday

No. 19 Oklahoma is in as good of shape as they could have hoped for after their 1-2 start to the year.

The Sooners have racked up three straight wins and are playing their best ball at the right time. This coincides with the return of two extremely key players in DE Ronnie Perkins and RB Rhamondre Stevenson.

Their impact was obvious against Texas Tech with the Oklahoma defense offering up it’s best performance of the season and Stevenson punching in three touchdowns to pick up the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Along with the lift they brought on the field, they also provided a huge emotional lift to a team that has missed them as leaders.

On Wednesday, Perkins and Stevenson met with the media for the first time this season alongside S Pat Fields and C Creed Humphrey. Here is what they had to say.

Creed Humphrey, Pat Fields named captains for Oklahoma in 2020

Redshirt junior center Creed Humphrey will lead the offense, while junior safety Pat Fields has been named the captain for the defense.

Just two days ahead of OU’s season opener, the captains are locked in.

Redshirt junior center Creed Humphrey will lead the offense, while junior safety Pat Fields has been named the captain for the defensive side.

Per SoonerStats, this is the first time OU has only named two captains since 1972. Most seasons feature four or even five different captains.

Humphrey was already OU’s leader in terms of experience, so he’ll carry this mantle well. He’s played 1,735 snaps during his career at OU, by far the most of any player on the roster (second is senior cornerback Tre Brown with 1,486).

Both players are expected to be major impacts on their respective side of the field.

Humphrey has anchored the offensive line for two years now, and is expected to finish his Sooner career strong ahead of next year’s NFL Draft. His experience will be much-needed for an offense that’s breaking in new starters at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.

Fields is set to lead a talented secondary, joined by safety Delarrin Turner-Yell and cornerbacks Tre Brown, Jaden Davis and Brendan Radley-Hiles. OU’s secondary will be a point of strength for a defense with some depth issues.

Oklahoma 2020 player card: No. 10 Pat Fields

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster. Here is the defensive No. 10 on Oklahoma’s roster

There is a ton of momentum to having a 2020 college football season these days. No definite signs, yet, but the season would start three and a half months from now.

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster.

Here is the defensive No. 10 on Oklahoma’s roster.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Name: Pat Fields

Number: No. 10

Year: Junior

Position: Safety

Hometown: Tulsa, Oklahoma

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 196 pounds

With Patrick Fields, consistency is key.

Nothing about what the Junior safety does is flashy, but he was one of the most consistent defenders on the Sooners’ defense last season. This is certainly something defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will appreciate next season.

An in-state three star recruit, Fields played in all 14 games for Oklahoma last season. He finished his sophomore campaign with 44 solo tackles, good for third best on the team. He also had five pass deflections and six tackles for loss.

With a second-year defensive coordinator and three defensive starters gone, consistency in the secondary will be refreshing for Sooners fans. If Fields stays solid or improves, he could firmly earn a place in the NFL Draft.

Oklahoma claims 12 all-Big 12 first, second-team members

12 Sooners were honored on the all-Big 12 first and second-teams. First team members include CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Hurts, Creed Humphrey…

Once again, the Sooners dominate the all-Big 12 teams.

12 Sooners were honored on the all-Big 12 first and second-teams. First team members include CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Hurts, Creed Humphrey and Kenneth Murray. Both Lamb and Muray landed on the first-team for their first time in their Oklahoma careers.

Kennedy Brooks, Jeremiah Hall, Adrian Ealy, Gabe Brkic, Neville Gallimore, Ronnie Perkins and Parnell Motley were all-Big 12 second-team honorees.

Other Sooners that picked up honorable mentions include Pat Fields, Reeves Mundschau, Jalen Redmond, Delarrin Turner-Yell and DaShaun White.

Oklahoma led the league in honorees followed by Baylor with 10, TCU (9), Iowa State (8), Oklahoma State (6), Kansas State, Texas Tech, West Virginia (5), Texas (4) and Kansas (2).

With not much surprise, both teams with the most Big 12 honorees are the teams playing for the Big 12 Championship and a possible College Football Playoff birth.

Oklahoma and Baylor will face off in a rematch following their thrilling 34-31 bout in November. Kickoff is set for 11a.m. CT on FOX.
