Twitter reaction to Kyle Whittingham’s fashion choice at Pac-12 media day

The new-look Kyle Whittingham drew plenty of comments in Las Vegas. #Utah #Pac12

Everyone who follows Pac-12 football was blown away by Kyle Whittingham at Pac-12 media day on Friday. Whittingham, among all the Pac-12 coaches, was the star of the show. Both in his appearance and in his comments, Whittingham made the biggest splash and made the most news at this one-day event in Las Vegas.

We noted in a separate article that Whittingham’s views of the relationship between offense and defense have evolved.

““I believe you’ve got to have a quality defense to compete for a championship, but if you look at the analytics, offense has really taken the forefront for what is more conducive to winning football games. I think it was, offense is responsible for 50 percent of your outcome, defense 35 percent and special teams 15 percent. In that regard, in order to win a championship, you better be pretty good on offense,” Whittingham said.

This is a new-look Whittingham, and that new look manifested itself with a choice of wardrobe which had everyone talking, as you’ll see below:

The 2023 Pac-12 football media day is officially in the books.

This year’s event was held on Friday and featured coaches and players from across the conference sharing their thoughts on what should be an entertaining upcoming season.

For Colorado, defensive coordinator Charles Kelly attended in place of head coach Deion Sanders, who on Thursday underwent a successful follow-up surgery to remove blood clots in his legs. The Buffs were also represented by quarterback Shedeur Sanders and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter.

Mason Cobb calls USC teammate Bear Alexander a ‘freak’ at Pac-12 media day

Mason Cobb is impressed by Bear Alexander’s physical prowess. Cobb likes what he sees on #USC’s defense.

USC linebacker Mason Cobb wanted to be a Trojan. He was an Oklahoma State Cowboy, but he wanted to play for Lincoln Riley, whom Oklahoma State defeated in Riley’s very last game as OU’s head coach before he went to USC.

Cobb and Riley have both left an Oklahoma-based college football program to join USC. It’s not a surprise that Riley wanted Cobb to represent the Trojans and their defense at Pac-12 media day in Las Vegas on Friday.

As reported by 247Sports and USC writer Chris Trevino, Mason Cobb called USC teammate Bear Alexander a “freak” at Pac-12 media day.

“That guy’s a freak, man,” Cobb told USCFootball.com. “He’s quick, explosive, works hard. Quiet kid. I can’t wait to see him in pads.”

Caleb Williams praises USC offensive line at Pac-12 media day

Voters refused to put a #USC O-lineman on the All- #Pac12 First Team. Caleb Williams noticed. He spoke at Pac-12 media day.

It was, and still is, very conspicuous: Not one USC offensive lineman was named a preseason All-Pac-12 first-team selection for 2023.

Not Justin Dedich. Not Jarrett Kingston. Not Jonah Monheim. Not the other high-end incoming transfers on the roster for the coming season.

We wrote: “There is undeniably prime offensive line talent throughout the Pac-12. Oregon State has a high-quality offensive line, as does Utah. The Beavers and Utes certainly deserve to have representation there, and we’re not going to suggest or imply they don’t. The idea that OSU and Utah deserve more first-team selections than USC does is not particularly objectionable or controversial. Oregon State won 10 games last year with basically no quarterback because its offensive line was truly elite. If the Beavers had an above-average quarterback in 2022, they probably would have made the Pac-12 Championship game.”

Our problem was — and is — with the idea that zero USC offensive linemen merited first-team status. How is Justin Dedich not on the first team?

Caleb Williams noticed. He spoke about his offensive linemen and many other topics in his appearance for USC at Pac-12 media day on Friday in Las Vegas. Here are his main remarks as relayed by on-site reporters and writers:

Follow-up surgery to force Deion Sanders to miss Pac-12 media day

Due to a follow-up surgery that he’ll soon be undergoing, Deion Sanders will not attend Pac-12 media day

This year’s Pac-12 media day has been highly anticipated, especially with Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders expected to be there. Unfortunately, Coach Prime will be undergoing a pair of follow-up surgeries on Thursday and won’t be in attendance on Friday, per multiple reports.

Sanders recently underwent a successful procedure to fix blood clots in his legs and all signs point to him making a full recovery in time for the season to begin.

With him missing Pac-12 media day in Las Vegas, defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, who came from Alabama, will be there in his place. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way player Travis Hunter, a pair of high-profile Jackson State transfers, will also be in attendance as CU’s player reps.

Coach Prime apologized for not being able to attend but made a bold promise for the Buffs’ 2023 opener against TCU (h/t BuffZone):

“I apologize that I’m not gonna be at the Pac-12 media day due to I have to have another surgery tomorrow — a couple of surgeries — one in my leg, as well as to remove other clots,” Sanders said in a video on Instagram. “I promise you when we go to TCU (for the season opener on Sept. 2), I’m running out in front of our team. I promise you that.”
