UFC Fight Night 248 video: Zhang Mingyang crushes Ozzy Diaz to keep perfect finish rate

Zhang Mingyang scored a beautiful elbow knockout of Ozzy Diaz at UFC Macau.

[autotag]Zhang Mingyang[/autotag] showed once again that he is a force in the opening round when he put [autotag]Ozzy Diaz[/autotag] away in highlight-reel fashion at UFC Fight Night 248.

Mingyang (18-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) maintained his rate of finishing his opponent in the first round in all of his career wins when a perfect short left elbow dropped Diaz (9-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and led to a flurry of ground-and-pound to end the light heavyweight bout less than 3 minutes in at Galaxy Arena in Macau.

The crowd went wild for Mingyang’s handiwork, and you can check out the replay of it below (via X):

Afterward, the 26-year-old Mingyang delivered an enthusiastic post-fight interview in which he said he is looking forward to big things from his future at 205 pounds.

“This knockout is for you, for the hometown crowd,” Mingyang said through an interpreter in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “I want two bonuses – two bonuses, because I deserve it. Hey Dana (White), I want the top 15. I want the title fight. I want the money fight.”

Ozzy Diaz vs. Zhang Mingyang prediction, pick, start time for UFC Fight Night 248

Ozzy Diaz and Zhang Mingyang look to establish their names at 205 pounds. How long will the UFC Macau main card opener last?

[autotag]Ozzy Diaz[/autotag] and [autotag]Zhang Mingyang[/autotag] meet Saturday on the UFC Fight Night 248 main card at Galaxy Arena in Macau. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 4-1
UFC main cards, 2024: 99-90-3

Ozzy Diaz vs. Zhang Mingyang UFC Fight Night 248 preview

Diaz (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut in a main card opening spot. After a failed audition on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, Diaz navigated his way to the UFC by picking up two stoppage wins in 2024 under the LFA banner. … Zhang (17-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) enters on a double-digit winning streak, and will look to extend it further in his second UFC appearance. In February, Zhang debuted with a first-round finish of Brendson Ribeiro at UFC 298.

Ozzy Diaz vs. Zhang Mingyang UFC Fight Night 248 expert pick, prediction

Despite having a guaranteed lightweight action fight between Hayisaer Maheshate and Nicholas Motta stuck on the prelims, the UFC matchmakers decided to kick off the main card with a light heavyweight bout between Zhang and Diaz.

Outside of the UFC brass’ penchant for force-feeding us lower-level big guy brawls on Fight Night cards, I suspect that these two get this quietly important spot due to their do-or-die nature.

Zhang is primarily a first-round finisher and seems like the type of talent who is ripe to start stinking up the joint with slogfests as soon as he starts experiencing any sort of a step up in competition.

Whereas Diaz, who doesn’t have as many fights on paper as Zhang does, is arguably more experienced than the Chinese fighter given what he’s seen on the regional scene.

If Diaz were a bit more durable, then I’d probably take a flier on him as an underdog. But will volatility being equal, I’ll reluctantly side with the more dynamic finisher who doesn’t have to travel for a home-soil fight.

The pick is Zhang by knockout in Round 1.

Ozzy Diaz vs. Zhang Mingyang UFC Fight Night 248 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the Chinese fighter, listing Zhang -340 and Diaz +260 via FanDuel.

LFA 127 results: Ozzy Diaz wins middleweight title, gets immediate call to DWCS

LFA crowned a new middleweight champion on Friday, but the winner of the vacant title is already moving on to another promotion.

LFA has crowned a new middleweight champion, but he won’t be sticking around to defend his new title.

In the main event at LFA 127 on Friday evening, [autotag]Ozzy Diaz[/autotag] faced Bruno Assis for the vacant middleweight title. The event took place at The Commerce Casino & Hotel in Los Angeles.

The classic striker vs. grappler matchup would be determined by the man with the sharper stand-up game. Diaz (7-1) kept the pressure high from the beginning of the fight, putting together nice combinations that stung his opponent throughout the first round. Assis (12-6) was dropped twice by punches during the exchanges and was unable to bring the fight to the canvas.

As time ticked away in the opening round, Diaz found a home for a hard right hand that put Assis down for the third time. After a few follow-up punches, referee Frank Trigg saw enough and stopped the fight with just a few seconds remaining in the first frame. The official time of the knockout stoppage was 4:53.

After the bout concluded, LFA CEO Ed Soares announced Diaz has received an invitation to compete for entry into the UFC in the upcoming season of  Dana White’s Contender Series. Just moments after the promotion crowned a a new champion in a vacant title fight, it will look to hold another vacant middleweight title fight in the near future.

In addition, Soares announced four $2,500 bonus winners. Chase Gibson vs. Javier Garcia won Fight of the Night, while Wascar Cruz and Ozzy Diaz take home Performance of the Night bonuses.

Full results of LFA 127 include:
