Ranking the most likely Big 12 championship scenarios

Texas can solidify Big 12 championship contention on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns (5-2) travel to Stillwater to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-1) this weekend. The game has significant implications for the Big 12 title race.

In most seasons, the title game features teams with two losses or less. Although chaos could result in a three-loss title game participant this year, no two-loss team is a lock for a spot in the championship game.

Since both teams have already dropped a game in conference play, Saturday’s bout could be the deciding factor in who plays in the final game. The two biggest competitors for a title bid face each other on the same day.

Kansas State (5-1) travels to Fort Worth to face the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs (6-0). Neither team has dropped a conference game this season.

Let’s look at the most likely championship scenarios.

Texas football looks to get selective with 2023 recruiting class

With around seven spots left in the 2023 recruiting class, Texas can and should swing for the fence.

The Texas Longhorns head into the 2022 season with a strong foundation for their upcoming recruiting class. Presently, they sit at No. 5 in the On3 consensus class rankings with 21 commits.

With an already impressive class, Steve Sarkisian’s staff will look to add the most impactful players available.

Three Texas targets have decision dates set over the next four weeks. Cedric Baxter Jr will announce his commitment August 10, while Jordan Matthews will decide on August 15.

Texas also awaits the commitment of Jalen Hale, as they battle Alabama and Texas A&M for the elite wide receiver.

Outside of those three, there are recruitments with less certainty for Texas.

Elite corner Javien Toviano and game-changing edges Tausili Akana and Damon Wilson are a couple long-shots that could decide in Sarkisian’s favor.

Let’s look at a few players to which Texas will allocate time.

LOOK: The Longhorns’ 2022 offensive line class has some maulers

You have to respect any edge player signing up to face these linemen.

Texas signed a whopping 14 offensive and defensive linemen in the 2022 class. Included in that number were four great edge rushers, which puts into perspective how overemphasized edge losses have been for this cycle.

Elsewhere in that line haul, Texas won seven recruits on the offensive side of the trenches.

Offensive line coach Kyle Flood will look to showcase this collection of freight trains in the offense this year.

Among them, Texas brought in arguably the nation’s top guard and tackle, depending on the recruiting publication. Devon Campbell and Kelvin Banks should be able to make an immediate impact in the run game.

Cameron Williams and Cole Hutson have impressed this offseason and others could also compete for playing time.

Here’s a glimpse at what opposing edge rushers have to look forward to when forced to defend the run.
