Oregon State vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Why is this all going so right for Oregon State? How did the team go from being the preseason predicted also-ran in the Pac-12 to a real, live contender?

The running game has been devastating.

It didn’t work all that well in the opener against Purdue, but since the loss the Beavers have ripped off over 240 rushing yards per game as they’ve been able to dominate teams like USC and Washington with grinding gashes.

BJ Baylor has blown up – 532 yards and nine scores in five games – 230-pound Deshaun Fenwick has grown into a bigger role, and it’s all combining with a defense that’s relatively rested throughout games and holds up well against the run.

Washington State’s offense is having problems, but …

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougar run defense hasn’t been awful.

It got ripped through by Utah State and Utah, but he managed to keep USC to under 50 yards – partly because the Trojan passing game went off – for a defense that’s not all that bad at getting off the field.

There’s a shot Wazzu could beat Oregon State at its own game. It’s not going to run, but it’s great at controlling the time of possession battle and it could make the OSU O press a bit more than usual.

For all of the good things the Beavers are doing, the defense is awful on third downs. Washington State has to combine its controlling style with actual movement down the field, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State is miserable on third downs … usually.

A 21-6 win over Cal was a huge step for a program that can’t get going so far under head coach Nick Rolovich.

How did it happen? The defense was strong, but the offense did its part by converting 47% of it its third down chances. It also helped that Cal couldn’t run the ball – that’s not going to happen on the other side in this.

Oregon State’s offensive line it playing too well. Washington State won’t generate enough consistent pressure into the backfield, the Beaver runners will grind out a few good scoring drives in the second half to set the tone, and the Cougar offense won’t have enough pop to keep up.

Why Washington State Will Win

The machine isn’t going to stop.

It appears that Mike Leach left his high-powered offense at Wazzu when he left for Mississippi State, and in steps former Hawaii head coach Nick Rolovich to make the passing game rock again.

The Oregon State secondary should be a bit better, but it got whacked around last year and should take a little bit to be strong against what’s coming.

The quarterback situation might still be kept under wraps – Cammon Cooper is the most likely option to run the show – but Max Borghi is a do-it-all running back to work around a fantastic offensive line that’s going to be among the Pac-12’s best. However …

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Washington State defense is going to be a concern.

The defensive front doesn’t have a good enough pass rush, the run D is about to have a problem with Jermar Jefferson a strong back to work a good-looking offense around.

There’s enough talent to keep up the pace. Oregon State’s defense improved in a big way last year, has one of the nation’s best all-around pass rushers in Hamilcar Rashed ready to be turned loose, and there’s enough size up front to hold up against Borghi and plug up the lanes in a hurry.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State hasn’t been even close to stopping Washington State over the last few years.

Last year was a 54-53 Cougar win coming off a 56-37 victory in 2018. Wazzu put 52 up on the board in 2017 and 2015, and every game has been either close or wildly fun since the Oregon State 19-6 win in 2012.

Expect a lot of scoring.

These two will trade haymakers all game long – just like last year – with the Beavers finally getting over the hump and win for the first time since 2013.

Why Oregon State Will Win

On a terrific run of three wins in the last four games, the Beavers are a win away from going bowling – seemingly unthinkable two months ago.

How is this all happening?

The defense is cranking up one of the Pac-12’s best pass rushes – it leads the league in tackles for loss – and the offense has found something in each of the recent wins that worked.

It was the D that took over in the win over Cal a month ago that started this run, and it was the passing game that rocked Arizona in a stunning blowout in Tucson a week later.

When Jake Luton and the air show works, this becomes a balanced, effective team that can do a little of everything right.

The key is the ability to work the passing attack down the field and spring big things to the targets on the move. If that works, everything else falls into place. It’s what OSU is 3-1 – only losing in a fun battle with Stanford – when it averaged eight yards or more per pass.

The Washington State secondary allowed 8.6 yards per throw, including getting bombed on by Stanford for over 500 yards and ten yards per pass in last week’s game. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Washington State Will Win

Wazzu is used to getting into battles with lots and lots and lots of passing.

Yeah, Davis Mills of Stanford threw for 504 yards and three touchdowns last week.

And Anthony Gordon threw for 520 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-22 Cougar win.

For all the good things the Oregon State defense does to get into the backfield and hit the quarterback, it’s not helping out the pass D enough. There are way too many big plays allowed, there aren’t enough big plays from the secondary, and the defense is a rumor most of the time on third downs.

Washington State tends to lose when it stops itself. It lost in a wild firefight with Arizona State, but other than that, the other four losses came in the only four games when it lost the turnover battle.

Those losses were the only times all season when the Cougars turned it over two times or more – 12 of the 16 turnovers on the season were in those games – and Oregon State doesn’t do much to force mistakes.

The Beavers are brilliant at not screwing up – they lead the nation in fewest turnovers with a mere four – but they’ve only picked off five passes on the season.

What’s Going To Happen

The winner of this game goes bowling, and the loser will have a rough time getting to six wins with Wazzu playing Washington next week and Oregon State finishing up with Oregon.

Washington State is a different team at home.

There was the meltdown over the final 19 minutes against UCLA. That’s the only blemish in a 4-1 season in Pullman. In the final home game of the season, the Cougars go out with a win in a terrific game with more than 700 yards or passing and a whole lot of big plays from both sides.

Like it was last week against Stanford, Wazzu’s passing game will be a wee bit better.
