Oregon shortstop Maddox Molony named to First Team All-Pac-12

Oregon shortstop Maddox Molony becomes just the second Duck freshman to be named as a First Team All-Pac-12 player.

For the last time, the Pac-12 has announced its regular season awards and Oregon shortstop Maddox Molony leads a group of Ducks to be honored.

Molony becomes the second Duck freshman to be named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, following Kenyon Yovan in 2017. Molony has set a program record for most home runs by a freshman (10) while leading the team in hitting with a .368 batting average. He also has 12 multiple-hit and nine multiple-RBI games in his 32 starts.

Also honored by the conference to the All-Defensive Team was center fielder Bryce Boettcher and first baseman Jacob Walsh.

Boettcher was also named honorable mention all-league. The two-sport athlete leads Oregon in stolen bases (12), runs scored (42) and outfield assists (6) while batting .290 with 11 home runs, 33 runs batted in and seven doubles.

Walsh is Oregon’s leader in both home runs (17) and RBI (55), while batting .281 with 13 doubles and 37 runs scored. Already the program’s career home run leader with 39, he needs just one home run at the Pac-12 Tournament to tie the single-season home run record set last season by Sabin Ceballos.

Oregon had several other players named as an honorable mention such as starting pitcher RJ Gordon, starter Grayson Grinsell, catcher Chase Meggers, closer Logan Mercado, reliever Bradley Mullan and outfielder Mason Neville.

Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana was the Player of the Year and Arizona’s Chip Hale was the Coach of the Year.

Oregon baseball ends regular season ranked in Top 25

D1Baseball.com includes Oregon in their last Top 25 ranking of the regular season after sweeping WSU last weekend.

As a team heads into the post-season, it wants to be playing their best.

After a five-game winning streak, including a weekend sweep over Washington State, Oregon Ducks baseball is doing just that and their getting their recognition.

D1baseball.com ranks the Ducks as the No. 23 team in the nation as they prepare for the Pac-12 tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz. where Utah awaits as Oregon’s opening opponent.

The Ducks go into the conference tournament as the 3-seed.

But Oregon (37-16) is far from the only Pac-12 ranked in the Top 25. The Beavers enter the rankings as the No. 6 team although they lost the regular-season title to Arizona on a walk-off double.

Speaking of the Wildcats, Arizona is the No. 18 team in the country and will have the top seed in the Pac-12 tourney. They are hoping for a better result this year after Oregon defeated the Cats in the 2023 tournament.

Tournament games begin on Tuesday with the Ducks opening with the Utes at 2:30 pm on Wednesday.

Ducks sweep Cougars to end baseball regular season

Oregon has a shot at the 2-seed in the Pac-12 tournament with a three-game sweep over WSU at PK Park.

Every college baseball team wants to be peaking around post-season time and like last season, Oregon Ducks baseball seems to be doing just that.

The Ducks ended the regular season on a high not as they swept Washington State in a three-game weekend series at PK Park. In the finale, Mason Neville crushed two home runs to lead Oregon to the 10-4 victory.

Starting pitcher Kevin Seitter threw 5 1/3 innings, and allowed four earned runs and six hits while striking out four. The bullpen consisting of Ryan Featherston and Bradley Mullan went the rest of the way.

Oregon broke through in the third inning on Neville’s big fly to right field to make it 2-0. But the Cougars took the lead right back in the top of the fourth with three runs to take a brief 3-2 lead.

It was brief because the Duck struck back right away in the bottom half of the fame on Maddox Molony’s home run to left and it was 4-3. Oregon wouldn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

The Ducks added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the eighth to end the scoring.

Home runs was the name of the game for the entire series. Neville hot two  bombs in the first game to lead the Ducks to a 9-2 win and in Game 2, Bryce Boettcher’s three-run homer ended a seven-run eighth inning to rally the Ducks past WSU 8-4.

Now Oregon will prepare to go down to Scottsdale, Ariz. to play in the Pac-12 tournament where it will be the defending champs. The Ducks will be the 2-seed if Oregon State defeats Arizona Saturday night. But if the Wildcats beat the Beavers, the Ducks will be the 3-seed.

The nine-team tourney begins on Tuesday, May 21.

Ducks make it a nice Mother’s Day with series win over Washington

Kevin Seitter pitches into the seventh inning and the Duck offense does just enough to down the Dawgs 5-3 in series finale.

Every Oregon Duck baseball player would have wanted to be home with their mothers on this Mother’s Day, but winning a weekend series at Washington wasn’t a bad consolation prize.

Oregon’s Kevin Seitter pitched into the seven inning and the Duck offense did just enough to defeat the Huskies 5-3 and take the weekend series two game to one on Sunday afternoon in Seattle.

Seitter went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs in the second, on six hits and striking out nine to earn his sixth victory of the season.

After the Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the second, Washington grabbed the lead back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Fortunately for Seitter and the Ducks, that would be the only runs the Dawgs could muster. It gave the Oregon offense plenty of time to overtake the home team.

They tied the game quickly in the third on Bennett Thompson’s single to center that scored Mason Neville. The game remained knotted at three apiece until the fifth when Justin Cassella singled home Neville to take the 4-3 lead.

Oregon added a much-needed insurance run in the seventh on Jacob Walsh’s sacrifice fly to center that scored Ryan Cooney.

Seitter and the bullpen took it from there.

Bradley Mullan finished off the seventh and the eighth and then closer Logan Mercado pitched a scoreless ninth to earn save No. 8 on the season.

Oregon will now come back to PK Park for the last three regular season games, a weekend set with Washington State beginning on Friday night.

Ducks homer four times to even weekend series in Seattle

After a disappointing series opening loss where they gave up a 6-0 lead, the Ducks left no doubt in Game 2 with a 13-6 win over Washington.

The mark of a good team is how they rebound off of a disappointing loss and if Saturday night in Seattle is any indication, the Oregon Ducks baseball team is in good shape.

Oregon gave away a 6-0 lead in the series opener to Washington to eventually lose 7-6, but the Ducks showed some mettle in Game 2 with a convincing 13-6 victory over the Huskies.

The Ducks hit four home runs to propel them to the big win. Ironically, the team’s leader in dingers, Jacob Walsh, wasn’t among those who hit a deep ball. Mason Neville, Maddox Molony, Carter Garate, and Chase Meggers all hit homers. Meggers also hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning to give him five runs batted in for the night.

Oregon scored in every inning except for the fifth and eighth. Even though the Ducks were lighting up the scoreboard early on, they still couldn’t shake the Dawgs. It was 7-4 after four innings.

But then Brock Moore came out of the bullpen and threw five scoreless innings to bring things back to order. He also struck out eight in the 90-plus-pitch effort out of the pen.

Oregon goes for the series win Sunday afternoon as the regular season winds down. After the Ducks finish their trip to Seattle, they come home to finish the Pac-12 season with a three-game series with Washington State at PK Park. That will be the last regular season series in the Pac-12 for the Ducks as the conference tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz. will be on the horizon.

Washington and Oregon conclude their series Sunday at noon.

Duck baseball projected as a 2-seed and play in Clemson Regional

D1Baseball has Oregon projected as a 2-seed in the Clemson Regional where the national 4-seeded Tigers would await.

Clemson might have to call Vandiaerbilt to see what the Oregon Ducks baseball team has to offer when it comes to NCAA regional action.

In their latest Field of 64 projection, D1Baseball.com has Oregon going to Clemson, South Carolina and playing in that regional along with the Tigers, Coastal Carolina, and Sacred Heart.

Going across the country and playing in a regional on the road is nothing new for coach Mark Wasikowski and his Duck team. Just last season, Oregon traveled to Nashville and won the four-team, double-elimination tournament on Vanderbilt’s home field.

If this projection is accurate, the Ducks would have a chance to do something very similar. According to the website, Clemson would be a national 4-seed and would host a Super Regional should the Tigers advance. Currently, Clemson is ranked No. 2 in D1baseball’s Top 25. The Tigers are currently 37-10 and 17-7 in the ACC.

Coastal Carolina, a traditional good baseball program, is having a down season, at least for them. The Chanticleers are currently 28-20 overall and just 11-13 in the Sun Belt Conference.

As for Sacred Heart out of the Northeast Conference, the Pioneers are 27-20 overall, but a whopping 20-7 in league action.

Other notable projections are Oregon State as a 2-seed in the Columbia, SC regional, Utah as a 3-seed in the Norman, Okla. regional and Arizona as a 2-seed in the Santa Barbara regional.

Ducks use the long ball to capture one game in Corvallis

Mason Neville hit two home runs and Kevin Seitter shut down the Beavers offense to salvage one game in Corvallis 7-1.

After the offense was shut down in Games 1 and 2, the Ducks got their bats going in the series finale to defeat the Beavers in Corvallis 7-1.

Mason Neville crushed two homers and Bryce Boettcher added another solo shot.

Those long balls were more than enough for starting pitcher Kevin Seitter, who had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. But Oregon State broke it up in the biggest way possible, a deep homer to center from Brady Kasper.

Despite that bomb, Seitter was dominating, going seven innings of one-run, one-hit ball, striking out nine while walking four.

Oregon jumped on Beaver starter Eric Segura with two runs in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring single from Jacob Walsh and then a fielding error. It was then 3-0 after two innings off of Neville’s first homer that went over the scoreboard in right-center field.

That was all Seitter needed as he cruised through the Beaver lineup.

It was then 6-0 Ducks after four with three more runs. Chase Meggers hit a sacrifice fly before Neville hit a ball that sailed over the right field bleachers.

Oregon is now 29-14 overall and 12-9 in Pac-12 action. The Ducks will now host the Beavers at PK Park for a non-conference game on Tuesday before Utah comes to town for a three-game Pac-12 weekend series beginning Friday.

Oregon prevails over Portland for fifth straight victory

The Ducks got off to an early good start and avenged an earlier loss with a 7-4 win over the Pilots.

In a matchup that likely could occur in an NCAA regional, the Oregon Ducks baseball team went on the road and managed to avenge an earlier loss to Portland with a 7-4 victory.

The win was the Ducks’ fifth straight and 20th on the season to improve to 20-7 overall. The Pilots, 3-0 in the West Coast Conference, fell to 17-9 overall.

These two teams met three weeks ago at PK Park with the Pilots stomping Oregon 15-5. It was a different story in the rematch as the Ducks were up 3-0 after two innings of play. Portland was able to cut the lead to 3-2 after three, but Jeffrey Heard’s RBI single extended the Ducks’ advantage.

The Ducks made it 6-3 in the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, a hit batsman and a walk. That would be more than enough for Oregon starter Michael Freund who went six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out seven.

A trio of relievers, Logan Mercado, Ryan Featherston and Bradley Mullan, held the Pilots to just one run. Mullan earned his third save of the year.

Oregon goes back to Pac-12 action on Friday with a three-game weekend series at UCLA and Jackie Robinson Field. The Bruins are having their difficulties as they are just 10-15 overall and 4-8 in league play.

Oregon baseball appears in Top 25 for the first time this season

For the first time this year, the Ducks are being ranked inside the top-25, according to Baseball America.

The Oregon Ducks baseball team is meeting expectations and now it is finally being recognized for its efforts.

Oregon is 19-7 overall and 6-3 in Pac-12 play as the season is almost half over and now the Ducks have appeared in the Baseball America Top 25 for the first time this year.

The Ducks, who are in first place in the Pac-12, come into this week’s ranking as the No. 20 team in the country. Baseball America says the recent schedule has and will play in Oregon’s favor to rack up the wins.

Oregon swept Seattle and moves into the Top 25 for the first time this season. While the Ducks were on their conference bye, they moved into first place in the Pac-12 and have won eight of their last nine games. They’ll look to stay hot as they hit the road this week, first at Portland, which stands atop the West Coast Conference standings, and then UCLA, which sits in the Pac-12 cellar. — Baseball America

Traditionally a strong baseball conference, the Pac-12 has just one other team ranked and that is Oregon State, who dropped several spots due to its series loss to USC over the last weekend.

Oregon looks to get the brooms out with big win over Seattle

Oregon wins its third straight game over Seattle and will look to sweep the Redhawks Saturday afternoon at PK Park.

PK Park is becoming a House of Horrors for Seattle University.

Oregon is planning to get its broom out Saturday afternoon after defeating the Redhawks 9-2. It’s the third straight win for the Ducks over the opponent up north and Oregon will be going for a rare four-game sweep.

The Ducks improved to 18-7 overall while Seattle fell to 7-19.

Again, it was an even game 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, but Oregon exploded for four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Maddox Molony gave the Ducks the lead for good with a solo homer, his first of his career. Anson Aroz extended the lead with a double that scored Bennett Thompson and later Drew Smith knocked in two more to increase the advantage.

That was more than enough for starter Grayson Grinsell. He threw six innings, allowing just one run and three hits while striking out nine, but walked five. His lack of control got Grinsell in trouble in the fifth as the Redhawks managed to have runners on second and third with one out.

Fortunately, Grinsell was able to whiff both Sam Kane and Derek Gellos to end the threat.

After seven innings of play, the contest sat at 5-2 and it was still a game Seattle was still in. But the Ducks scored four more in the eighth to put it away. The big hit in the inning came from Thompson with a two-run triple to right-center.

The Ducks go for the sweep over the Redhawks as the game is scheduled for a 12:05 first pitch.
