5 Oscar takeaways from the 2024 SAG Awards, including why Oppenheimer has all the momentum

Here are five Oscar takeaways from Saturday night’s SAG Awards.

Saturday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards recognized plenty of talented and deserving actors with honors, but it also helped us get as definitive a look at the 2024 Oscar race as we’ve gotten so far.

The Academy Awards are in two weeks, and everything points to Christopher Nolan’s historical epic Oppenheimer winning plenty of trophies for the evening.

The film won three of the five major film awards, including best cast, best lead actor for Cillian Murphy and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. It’s feeling more and more like it’s the film to beat at the moment in multiple categories.

We’ve gathered five key takeaways for the 2024 Oscars, including where we really don’t have a clear winner settled in the acting categories.

2024 BAFTAs: Oppenheimer, Emma Stone headline award winners

Oppenheimer nearly swept the major categories at the BAFTAs on Sunday night.

The 2024 British Academy Film Awards (also known as the BAFTAs) took place Sunday, February 18. Unsurprisingly, Oppenheimer did well in the win column, taking home victories in four of the top six categories.

With the Oscars coming up on March 10, it’s interesting to see which movies and actors are garnering the most attention. It’s certainly no guarantee that the results will be the same, however, as last year’s BAFTAs and Oscars shared no common winners across the top six categories (film, director, acting).

Here are the major award winners.

Sterling K. Brown endearingly predicted he’s going to lose the Oscar to Robert Downey Jr.

Sterling K. Brown is just awesome, even if he doesn’t think he’s going to win the Oscar.

Actor Sterling K. Brown did something incredibly rare after being nominated for an Academy Award. He predicted that he’s not going to win one.

The American Fiction co-star earned his first Oscar nomination Best Supporting Actor last month, but he recently admitted on The Graham Norton Show that he does not think he’s going to win in the category.

Brown readily predicted that Oppenheimer actor and screen veteran Robert Downey Jr. will ultimately take home the gold and that he’s just happy to be part of the process.

Downey Jr. is the heavy favorite to win Best Supporting Actor, but Brown’s incredibly classy humility and appreciation for the nomination in general will earn him plenty of respect from his peers.

“Robert Downey Jr.’s going to win, and he’s incredibly deserving,” Brown predicted on the show. “He’s an incredible actor. Like, you should give him love, and the fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with him, and Mr. [Robert] De Niro, and Ryan Gosling and [Mark] Ruffalo. I’m just happy to be in the room.”

Brown is one of the most reliable people in his profession, and it’s really endearing to hear him so gregariously talk about the awards race and his place in it.

While this might not be his year (at absolutely no fault of his own), we could see him hoisting the Oscar one of these days.

Of course, both films did get in Best Picture, as did plenty of other deserving titles. We’ve got takeaways from the full list of nominees, including some thoughts on why Oppenheimer is the favorite, why Barbie might’ve stumbled a bit and why you should pay attention to Poor Things.

We’re not sure how right we’ll be, but we feel pretty good about most of these predictions.

5 Oscar takeaways from the 2024 Golden Globes, including Oppenheimer’s huge night

Oppenheimer had a heck of a night at the Golden Globes.

The 2024 Golden Globes have come and gone, with Christopher Nolan’s stellar epic Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ mind-bending dramedy Poor Things taking home the night’s top prizes for movies.

While comedian Jo Koy got poor notices for his opening monologue (including one from Taylor Swift), this year’s Globes ceremony did help us understand the pulse in the industry for this year’s Academy Awards just a bit better than we did before.

The night’s wins helped confirm some of our gut feelings and gave us a few other things to consider for the annual Oscar ceremony.

Let’s go through five big takeaways from the Globes, including which movie might deserve more attention than it’s been getting and which movie should be considered the Best Picture front-runner right now.

The Oscar shortlists are out for 10 categories, and we’ve got thoughts.

The latest Oscars shortlists have been revealed, giving 10 of the latest Academy Award categories much more of an idea of how nominations will look next month.

Some of these categories featured shortlists for short films, while seven other categories spanned across different competitions for feature films.

We’ve got five central takeaways for this latest shortlist reveal, including a notable snub and thoughts on how the Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature categories are shaping up.

Why copies of Oppenheimer on 4K Ultra HD have been sold out

If you’re looking for a 4K Ultra HD copy of Oppenheimer, you might have to wait a bit.

If you’re looking to purchase a new copy of this summer’s blockbuster historical epic Oppenheimer on the best format possible, you might have to wait a little while.

There has been a shortage of 4K Ultra HD copies of the film, which hit home video this past Tuesday after a lengthy theatrical run.

Per Deadline, stores like Best Buy and Amazon have been sold out of the film in the past week. Online pre-orders had also been pushed out past the expected Nov. 21 release date at Amazon.

Universal, the studio that distributed the film, explained in a statement to Deadline that they’re working to restock copies of the film on 4K Ultra HD nationwide.

“We are happy so many consumers are embracing Oppenheimer in 4K Ultra HD and understand that some retailers may currently be out of stock,” the studio’s home entertainment division said in a statement provided to Deadline. “Universal is working to replenish those retailers quickly so fans can watch the film at home in the best picture quality possible.”

While there might be copies near you at your local retailers or available online, you might also have to wait to watch the Christopher Nolan film if you wish to do so with your very own 4K Ultra HD disc.

However, those who don’t mind renting it or owning a digital copy can watch the film without needing a disc to do so through premium video on demand.
