Robert Downey Jr. delivered an unforgettable speech after winning Best Supporting Actor

Robert Downey Jr. finally won his Oscar, and his speech rocked.

After years of working in the business, veteran actor Robert Downey Jr. has finally won his Academy Award.

The veteran actor, best known for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar on Sunday night at the 96th Oscars for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Downey Jr. gave predictably charismatic speech where he honored his wife Susan Downey, Nolan and everyone he worked with on the blockbuster film.

It was the perfect speech for such a beloved actor, as so many in the room looked very happy to see the Hollywood legend finally get his due.

It’s been a long time coming for Downey Jr., who was last nominated in the same category for Tropic Thunder back in 2008. Now, he’ll have his first Oscar to put on the shelf at home for an illustrious career stretching back decades.

It’s such a cool moment for Downey Jr. and all movie fans that he finally got his Academy Award, and his speech reflected just how special that moment was.

Robert Downey Jr.’s awards history at the Oscars

Has Robert Downey Jr. ever won an Academy Award?

As we get closer to the 96th Academy Awards, it’s worth looking at this year’s nominees and how they’ve fared at previous ceremonies.

Veteran actor Robert Downey Jr. has been working in show business for four decades now, spanning from the 1980s teen dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and last summer’s blockbuster epic Oppenheimer.

Has Downey Jr. ever won an Oscar in his prolific career? Not yet, but it might not be long until he wins his first. He’s now been nominated three times, his first nomination coming in 1993.

Downey Jr. was nominated for Best Actor that year for his portrayal of silent film legend Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s biopic Chaplin, but he lost to Al Pacino and his performance in Scent of a Woman.

He’s wait until the 2009 Oscars for his next nomination for the Hollywood satire Tropic Thunder, where his performance of the imbecilic fictional character actor Kirk Lazarus earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

However, the late, great Heath Ledger won that year posthumously in the category for playing the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Downey Jr. now looks poised to win his first Oscar for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Nolan’s Oppenheimer in this year’s Best Supporting Actor category.

Downey Jr. has already won the SAG Award, the BAFTA, the Critics’ Choice Award and the Golden Globe in those supporting actor categories this awards season. An Oscar looks to be in short order.

Sterling K. Brown endearingly predicted he’s going to lose the Oscar to Robert Downey Jr.

Sterling K. Brown is just awesome, even if he doesn’t think he’s going to win the Oscar.

Actor Sterling K. Brown did something incredibly rare after being nominated for an Academy Award. He predicted that he’s not going to win one.

The American Fiction co-star earned his first Oscar nomination Best Supporting Actor last month, but he recently admitted on The Graham Norton Show that he does not think he’s going to win in the category.

Brown readily predicted that Oppenheimer actor and screen veteran Robert Downey Jr. will ultimately take home the gold and that he’s just happy to be part of the process.

Downey Jr. is the heavy favorite to win Best Supporting Actor, but Brown’s incredibly classy humility and appreciation for the nomination in general will earn him plenty of respect from his peers.

“Robert Downey Jr.’s going to win, and he’s incredibly deserving,” Brown predicted on the show. “He’s an incredible actor. Like, you should give him love, and the fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with him, and Mr. [Robert] De Niro, and Ryan Gosling and [Mark] Ruffalo. I’m just happy to be in the room.”

Brown is one of the most reliable people in his profession, and it’s really endearing to hear him so gregariously talk about the awards race and his place in it.

While this might not be his year (at absolutely no fault of his own), we could see him hoisting the Oscar one of these days.
