Twitter reacts to Michael Mayer touchdown to put Notre Dame on board

Nice first touchdown.

To put it lightly, Notre Dame had a bad first quarter against North Carolina. The defense allowed a 12-play, 76-yard drive that culminated in a fourth-down touchdown for the Tar Heels. The offense barely could gain any yardage to save itself. The result was a 7-0 Heels lead after the first 15 minutes.

Once the second quarter began, the offense finally showed signs of life. The first play saw [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] connect with [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] for a 34-yard completion to get into Heels territory. After three straight runs from [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag], Pyne completed a pass beneath the Heels’ secondary to [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], who ran for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game:

Mayer entered the week with fewer receiving yards than [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag]. Hopefully, this is the game that gives him the team lead for good. Until we can find that out, look at how Twitter users expressed themselves after Mayer’s latest touchdown:

Notre Dame has hung with Ohio State well so far to this point. Early in the second quarter, the Irish had their first touchdown drive of the season. And boy, were there some impressive plays to make it happen.

First, you had this amazing catch from [autotag]Tyler Salerno[/autotag]:

That was followed by an equally nice catch from [autotag]Kevin Bauman[/autotag]. Ultimately, the Irish found themselves on the Buckeyes’ 1-yard line, and [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] did his best Walter Payton impression to put the Irish back in the lead after they squandered it during the first quarter:

Here’s what people had to say about this play that capped an 87-yard drive:

One Foot Down writer: Time for Notre Dame to join Big Ten

Would the Irish actually do this?

With Texas and Oklahoma officially set to join the SEC in a few years, the discussion about the topic finally look to be dying down. However, the argument that Notre Dame needs to join a conference permanently refuses to go away. One such call has come from within the Notre Dame writing community.

Jake Lynch of One Foot Down, Notre Dame’s SB Nation site, has written a piece calling for the Irish to join the Big Ten for football. Among the arguments Lynch makes are the apparent inevitability of four super conferences taking hold of college football and just about every other program looking to avoid a typically quality opponent like the Irish for their nonconference games. To Lynch, the Big Ten makes the most sense because the Irish having more traditional rivals with those programs than ACC programs.

They’re good arguments, but it leaves out the reality that a conference needs Notre Dame more than the other way around. Also, if it was mandated that the Irish join a conference, why would it join a conference that one of its members actively blocked its path to entry? Plus, it’s doubtful the Irish would break their deal with all of the ACC schools that goes well into the next decade. Simply put, it most likely would take a direct order from God for the Irish to give up their independence.
