Florida in the lead for this Alabama safety after making offer

Billy Napier’s staff goes way back with three-star safety Miguel Mitchell and that has Florida on top in his recruitment.

Three-star safety Miguel Mitchell finally got his offer from Billy Napier to play at the University of Florida Wednesday and was over the moon after receiving the news.

Napier has been in contact with Mitchell since he was the coach at Louisiana and has been holding off on offering the Oxford (Alabama) recruit to keep the competition away, according to On3. An offer from USC came in on Monday and Napier didn’t hesitate to get the Gators officially in the game. There’s still plenty of recruiting left to do before a decision is made, but Mitchell says UF is in the lead right now.

“It’s top of my board right now,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been waiting on this.”

Vanderbilt earned Mitchell’s pledge in June, but things changed over the season and he backed off that commitment in November. He also holds offers from West Virginia, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Memphis and Western Kentucky.

Mitchell is the No. 65 athlete on the 247Sports Composite, but the Gators are looking at him to play safety. Co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney has been Mitchell’s main contact at both Lousiana and Florida. This seems like Florida’s recruit to lose given the relationship carried over with much of Napier’s staff.

Report: Florida’s top receiver to play in Gasparilla Bowl despite transfer portal

Florida should have its top receiver against UCF despite him being in the transfer portal.

Florida’s leading receiver Jacob Copeland entered the transfer portal earlier in the month, but he’s warming up on the field ahead of the Gasparilla Bowl, according to On3’s Nick de la Torre.

Copeland entered the portal on December 9 and already has a crystal ball projection to Maryland under his name, but he’ll have one more chance to impress any potential suitors. Copeland led the Gators this season with 39 receptions, 607 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. He said that his “last game as a Gator” was coming soon in his social media announcement, but it looked like the team would be without him against UCF.

Emory Jones will be playing his last game as a Gator before entering the transfer portal as well, so the two could pair up and leave on a high note. It’s unlikely either will end up staying with the program, but it’s still a possibility.

Copeland’s best game this year came at Raymond James Stadium against USF in Week 2. He brought in five passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns. A repeat performance against UCF would be a dream scenario.

In bowl games, Copeland has just two career receptions for 23 yards. He didn’t play against Oklahoma last season in the Cotton Bowl due to multiple positive COVID tests. He was limited to just two catches for six yards against Alabama in the SEC Championship, though.

On3 ranks Notre Dame outside their preseason Top-10?!?

No respect for the Irish…

Another day, another preseason poll, but this is one is significantly different than what USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll or the AP had. On3, a newly created college sports and recruiting website recently released their preseason rankings of every team in the country.

[listicle id=31937]

What one might expect to see is that Notre Dame would be ranked in the lower portion of the top 10, not completely outside of it. Mike Huguenin ranked the Irish 13th overall, citing the offense as their main concern. “The Irish are going to miss Ian Book and the offensive line is undergoing almost a complete makeover,” explained Huguenin.

Honestly, preseason polls don’t matter much. Every year there is turnover on collegiate teams and its an educated guess as to who will be good. It would have been nice to see Notre Dame getting ranked higher than 13th, but like every other season, the Irish will have to prove their worth on the field and not in a preseason guess.

Michigan State’s Tyson Walker listed in top five returning PG rankings

Michigan State’s Tyson Walker is considered to be one of the best returning point guards in all of college basketball

Michigan State’s Tyson Walker is considered to be one of the best returning point guards in all of college basketball.

KJ Smith — who played at North Carolina and now serves as a national basketball analyst on On3 — released a top five returning point guards ranking this week, and Walker was included on his list. Walker is the lone Big Ten player on this list and is joined by Jahvon Quinerly of Alabama, Remy Martin of Kansas, Caleb Love of North Carolina and Collin Gillespie of Villanova.

Here’s what Smith had to say about Walker:

Tyson Walker is a 6-0, 162-pound guard transfer for Michigan State. Walker is one of the hardest players to guard in college basketball because of his lightning-quick speed and a dangerous step-back jump shot. This lethal combination is the reason he averaged 18.8 points and 4.8 assists for the Northeastern Huskies.

As Smith noted, Walker is new to Michigan State this season after transferring from Northeastern. He is expected to start for the Spartans and could fill a huge hole on last year’s team at the point guard position.
