Broncos officially announce first 8 roster cuts

The Broncos officially announced their first eight roster cuts as the team approaches a 53-man roster.

The Denver Broncos took their first eight steps toward finalizing a 53-man roster on Monday.

First, the Broncos released three veterans: defensive lineman Angelo Blackson, wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and inside linebacker Andre Smith. Those players will not be subject to the NFL’s waiver wire.

Second, the team waived five young players: safety Omar Brown, cornerback Art Green, defensive back Kaleb Hayes, offensive lineman Oliver Jervis and inside linebacker Alec Mock.

Those are the first eight official cuts among 38 moves on deck in Denver. The Broncos confirmed those cuts on Monday.

It was not announced by the club, but the team also informed punter Trenton Gill that he will be waived. The fact that the Gill cut is not yet official suggests Denver might be looking to trade the punter ahead of the roster cuts deadline.

The Broncos also made decisions on wide receiver Tim Patrick and running back Samaje Perine on Monday. Denver will look to trade both Patrick and Perine. If they are unable to find trade partners, the Broncos will release those veterans before submitting a 53-man roster on Tuesday.

We are tracking all of the team’s roster moves on Broncos Wire.

Safety Omar Brown selected by DC in 2024 UFL Draft

Former Husker safety Omar Brown was selected in the 10th round of the UFL draft by the DC Defenders.

The UFL held its 2024 Draft on Wednesday, providing numerous players an opportunity to play football professionally. The Nebraska football team sat back and witnessed one of its own selected.

The DC Defenders selected former Husker safety Omar Brown in the tenth round of the UFL draft. He joins a Defenders team that put together a 4-6 record in 2024 and lost the 2023 XFL Championship game.

In his collegiate career, Brown racked up 196 total tackles across five seasons, delivered 11 tackles for loss, forced three fumbles, and snatched nine interceptions.

He spent his final two seasons of collegiate action at Nebraska. Before Lincoln, he played at Northern Iowa for three seasons.

Last season, he played in all 12 games and started in eight. Brown tied for second on the team with 51 tackles. He also produced three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one interception.

His performance helped him receive an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention while also contributing to Nebraska’s best-rushing defense (92.9 yards per game), total defense (303.5 yards per game), and scoring defense (18.3 points per game) since the Huskers joined the Big Ten in 2011.

Broncos roster series: No. 45 DB Omar Brown

Broncos rookie defensive back Omar Brown spent time at cornerback and safety in college, totaling 16 PBUs and 9 INTs in five seasons.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie safety Omar Brown, No. 45.

During the offseason, teammates can share jersey numbers if they play on opposite sides of the ball. This summer, Brown will share No. 45 with tight end Nate Adkins.

Before the Broncos: Brown (6-1, 200 pounds) spent three years at Northern Iowa, totaling 140 tackles, 13 pass breakups and eight interceptions in 29 games with college football’s Panthers. He then transferred to Nebraska ahead of the 2022 season. After a limited role in his first season, Brown emerged as a key player in 2023, recording 51 tackles, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery in 12 games.

A versatile defensive back, Brown received honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in 2023. He spent time at both safety and cornerback in college.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Brown as an undrafted free agent this spring. He was one of the top UDFAs available following the 2024 NFL draft.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Longshot. The Broncos have a crowded safety depth chart, so Brown will likely be competing for a spot on the practice squad this summer.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos DB Omar Brown

The Broncos have a crowded safety depth chart, but undrafted rookie Omar Brown will get a chance to compete for a spot this summer.

The Denver Broncos signed college free agent Omar Brown out of Nebraska following the 2024 NFL draft. Brown, who comes in with measurements of 6 feet and weighing 201 pounds, has the chance to perhaps make the roster or the practice squad with a productive summer.

His stats from Nebraska appear solid: he finished his final season with 12 appearances and eight starts. During that time, he totaled 51 tackles while adding three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception. His production allowed him to become an honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection.

Check out his highlights:

Competing at a crowded position, Brown will face an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster this summer. Brandon Jones, Caden Sterns and P.J. Locke top the safety depth chart with JL Skinner, Delarrin Turner-Yell and Brown behind them. If there’s not room on the active roster, Brown should be a strong candidate for the practice squad in 2024.

Broncos’ UDFA contracts give hints about odds to make 53-man roster

Based on their contracts, Omar Brown, Blake Watson and Frank Crum appear to be Broncos’ early favorites to make the 53-man roster as UDFAs.

Following the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos have started filling out their 90-man offseason roster by signing undrafted free agents.

The guaranteed salaries for these UDFAs can give insights into which players were most coveted by the Broncos (and other teams).

We don’t yet know the contract details for wide receiver BJ West or tight end Dylan Leonard, but the 11 deals have been reported. Three players — defensive back Omar Brown, running back Blake Watson and offensive tackle Frank Crum — received $250,000 in guarantees, seemingly making them the early favorites to make the 53-man roster as UDFAs.

Four other players received guarantees north of $100,000. Four others were under $48,000. Here are the totals that have been reported so far:

Teams are allowed to host up to 30 prospects on visits ahead of the draft. Packers Wire is tracking all the reported visits here.

Brown, a Minneapolis native, spent three seasons at Northern Iowa before transferring to Nebraska. He was a three-time All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection while at Northern Iowa and a one-time All-Big Ten selection at Nebraska.

Brown has experience playing cornerback, safety and slot corner.

Over 52 career games and 37 starts, Brown produced 192 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, nine interceptions and 25 pass breakups.

In 2023, Brown allowed 35 catches on 59 targets and didn’t give up a touchdown pass in coverage, per PFF. He spent most of his time in the slot for Nebraska last season.

Brown earned strong grades as both a perimeter cornerback at Northern Iowa in 2021 and as a slot corner for Nebraska in 2023.

Brown (6-0, 205) wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds, per Eric Galko of the East-West Shrine Bowl. He also had a 1.53-second 10-yard split and 6.97-second three-cone drill time.

Brown is the No. 213 overall prospect on PFF’s big board.

The Packers have five picks on Day 3 of the 2024 NFL draft and could use one on a developmental safety prospect like Brown.

247Sports’ Nick Kosko predicts Nebraska to upset Iowa in the 2022 season finale

247Sports’ Nick Kosko likes the Nebraska Cornhuskers to upset the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2022 regular season finale.

Iowa has owned the series against Nebraska, winning the past seven contests against the Cornhuskers. It looked like the Hawkeyes’ dominance over Nebraska was set to come to a close last year in Lincoln, Neb., but a fourth-quarter Iowa rally was jumpstarted by Henry Marchese’s blocked punt that Kyler Fisher returned 14 yards for a touchdown.

That sliced Iowa’s deficit from 21-9 to 21-16. The Hawkeyes followed that special teams game-changer up by forcing Huskers backup quarterback Logan Smothers into an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone for a safety. Iowa’s Caleb Shudak added a 44-yard field goal on the ensuing possession and suddenly the game was tied.

Then, Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras capped off a six-play, 76-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge to give the Hawkeyes its first lead with 2:58 remaining. Hawkeyes cornerback Jermari Harris sealed the victory, intercepting Smothers to end any final threat from the Huskers.

In the process, Iowa registered its fifth consecutive victory in Lincoln, captured the Big Ten West crown and notched a 10-win season. 247Sports’ Nick Kosko isn’t buying into any of the recent series history in his game-by-game predictions for Nebraska’s 2022 season, though.

Kosko likes Nebraska to upset Iowa, 24-21, to end the 2022 regular season.

Yes, we’re picking an upset here. Nebraska puts a stamp on its bowl game date, whenever and wherever it might be. The upset over the Hawkeyes on the road will be the defining game of the 2022 season for Scott Frost. There’s gotta be one in there somewhere, and why not the final regular season game of the upcoming fall? Let’s do it. A late field goal puts Nebraska up by 10 (24-14) and the defense holds on as Iowa fails a late comeback. With the 7-5 record, Frost ensures a 2023 campaign and has a chance to win an eighth game in the postseason. – Kosko, 247Sports.

Obviously, this would be a reversal of what fans have seen in recent years. There’s a good chance that it has serious division implications for the Hawkeyes, too. The West feels like it’s wide open, and Iowa just might be hosting Nebraska for a return trip to Indianapolis in the 2022 edition to determine the fate of the Heroes Trophy.

If that’s the circumstances going in for Iowa’s Senior Day game, then the Huskers will have earned a difficult to come by victory, and it would further signal that Nebraska has made progress as a football program in 2022.

While Iowa is an interesting team heading into next season given the disparity between the team’s offensive and defensive production in 2021, Nebraska might have been the most intriguing, hardest to figure out team in all of the Big Ten last season. The Huskers finished 3-9, which is by definition bad. Still, Nebraska lost eight one-score games, which could indicate that the Huskers are ripe for a quick turnaround.

Time will tell on that front. One thing is for certain: Scott Frost needs 2022 to show tangible results if he’s to remain the Huskers’ head football coach. Frost brought in offensive coordinator Mark Whipple from Pittsburgh to help try and rejuvenate Nebraska’s offense. Last season’s backup quarterback in Smothers returns for Nebraska, but longtime starter Adrian Martinez is off to Kansas State.

Nebraska went ahead and brought former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson in to be the likely starter, and the Huskers added Florida State transfer signal-caller Chubba Purdy as well. The wide receiving corps features a series of transfers as well with Trey Palmer arriving from LSU, Marcus Washington from Texas and Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda from New Mexico State.

Palmer had 30 grabs for 344 yards and three scores in 2021, Washington registered 18 receptions for 277 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Garcia-Castaneda hauled in 37 passes for 578 yards and four scores. Add that in with Omar Manning’s returning 26 grabs for 380 yards and two touchdowns.

In the backfield, Nebraska will be looking for Rahmir Johnson, Gabe Ervin Jr. and Jaquez Yant to combine for the Huskers’ rushing attack. Last season, Johnson carried 112 times for 495 yards and four scores, Ervin Jr. rushed 37 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Yant tallied 47 totes for 294 yards and one trip to the end zone.

Defensively, Nebraska added two-time All-Big 12 second-team selection Ochaun Mathis at defensive end. Mathis has 135 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks over the course of his college career. He’ll team with Garrett Nelson, Ty Robinson and Alabama transfer Stephon Wynn Jr. At the second level, Nebraska linebackers Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich combined for 189 tackles last season.

The Huskers’ defensive backfield has its fair share of transfer additions as well, featuring Tommi Hill from Arizona State, DeShon Singleton from Hutchinson Community College and Omar Brown from Northern Iowa. That trio will join safety Myles Farmer and cornerback Quinton Newsome.

For a head coach in Frost that frankly is desperate for success heading into 2022, it makes sense to replenish the roster with a series of transfer portal additions and see if it works. While Iowa hopes to be fighting for the Big Ten West in the season finale, Frost just might be coaching for his job.
