College Football Playoff Committee reveals second rankings

See how the playoff picture has changed in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

The College Football Playoff Committee has revealed its second Top 25 rankings of the season, which means time is that much more limited for certain teams to boost their resume and rise up the rankings.

Despite there being only a few weeks in the playoff field is set, there doesn’t seem to be a clear picture as to which teams are certainly in, and which ones are most definitely out.

It appears as if it will come down to the final week of the regular season, and possibly conference championships, to determine the top four teams.

Here are the top 10 teams in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Texas A&M defensive lineman ejected for punching an Ole Miss offensive lineman in the groin

Okay, well, this could’ve easily been avoided.

If you’re looking for the most embarrassing ejection of the day, look no further than the Texas A&M – Ole Miss game.

While the Aggies were playing in Oxford, defensive lineman Shemar Turner got tangled up with Ole Miss offensive lineman Micah Pettus and didn’t express his frustration of the encounter in the right way … at all.

Turner’s head got caught underneath Pettus’ legs for a brief moment, which caused Turner to give Pettus a swift punch in the groin.

The defensive lineman was understandably ejected from the contest, which just does not help when you’re playing a quality opponent like Ole Miss on the road.

Punching someone below the belt is just never an acceptable way to react, even in such an awkward encounter like the two lineman had.

For Texas A&M, you’ve got to, at the very least, not have your players punch other players in the groin. That’s an easy thing to do to avoid ejections.

If you’re Jimbo Fisher, you’re likely banging your head on the clipboard for how stupid this sequence of events ended for your team.

Aided by special teams and late offense, Texas A&M trails Ole Miss 20-14 at halftime

A blocked field goal return and a Le’Von Moss touchdown have brought the Aggies back to life on the road against Ole Miss.

Texas A&M (5-3, 3-2 SEC) entered Week 10 on the road vs. 10th-ranked Ole Miss with revenge on their mind after falling to the Rebels 31-28 just a season ago. Making obvious headlines throughout the week, Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher has not won a true SEC road game in two seasons and is 0-2 vs. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin as well.

On Saturday, after a shaky start on offense while giving up two scores on defense, Aggies safety Jacoby Matthews’ blocked field goal return from defensive end Shemar Turner, coupled with running back Le’Veon Moss’s late second-quarter touchdown has brought the Aggies within one score at the half, trailing Ole Miss 20-14.

Quarterback Max Johnson continued to face immense pressure in the pocket amid the issues on the offensive line that have festered in SEC play, completing 12/17 for 77 yards. In comparison, Grand Valley State transfer wide receiver Jahdae Walker currently leads the team in receiving with three receptions for 41 yards. No, the running game has not fixed its issues, but Moss’s 13-yard touchdown saw minor improvement that needs to continue throughout the game.

Despite giving up 20 points, Texas A&M’s swarming defensive line, specifically the aforementioned Shemar Turner, has continued to pressure Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart, one of the better signal callers in the conference. While star wide receiver Evan Stewart leaves a gaping hole in the Aggies’ passing offense, look for Walker, Moose Muhammad III, and Noah Thomas to step up in the second half.

Lane Kiffin supports LSU over Alabama in Week 10 matchup

Lane Kiffin is rooting for the LSU Tigers over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the big-time SEC West matchup

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has remained very close with the Crimson Tide program after leaving for FAU. His move to Ole Miss brought him back to the SEC and got him closer to Tuscaloosa and Nick Saban. While he’s typically supportive of Alabama, he appears to be anything but in favor of the Tide in Week 10.

During a brief remote appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay, which was broadcasting live from Tuscaloosa, Kiffin talked about rat poison, the Rebels’ game against Texas A&M, and the race to win the SEC West.

Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU could be in a three-way tie for the SEC West with an Ole Miss loss and an Alabama loss. However, if the Tide win and the Rebels lose today, Saban and his team clinch an SEC championship appearance.

Ending his appearance on College Game Day, Kiffin made sure to say “Geaux Tigers,” to show his support for LSU over Alabama in today’s matchup in Tuscaloosa.

Former USC QB Jaxson Dart named Davey O’Brien candidate, hopes to finish 2023 with a flourish

It’s the home stretch for Dart, a final chance to make a big impression at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss Rebels quarterback and former USC Trojan Jaxson Dart was named as one of the 35 quarterbacks on the Davey O’Brien Class of 2023 on Tuesday by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Every quarterback included in the class is officially a candidate to receive the 2023 Davey O’Brien Trophy, which is awarded annually to the No. 1 quarterback in the nation, and is the oldest and most prestigious quarterback award in college football.

The Utah native and former Gatorade National Player of The Year has thrown for 2,080 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions through eight games, with a 7-1 record this season. Dart has also rushed for 326 yards and seven touchdowns on 85 carries leading the Rebs to a No.10 overall ranking.

Dart is leading an Ole Miss offense that currently ranks third in the SEC in both scoring (38.9 points per game) and total offense (474 yards per game).

Dart, along with current USC quarterback Caleb Williams, has also landed on the watch lists for the Maxwell, Manning and Johnny Unitas Awards. Dart hopes for a big game against Texas A&M on Saturday, November 4.

The top plays from Auburn’s loss to Ole Miss

The Auburn Tigers lost for a fourth straight time on Saturday, but they did make some great plays. Here are the best four we saw on Saturday.

The Auburn Tigers lost again on Saturday, losing another one-score game at home, this time to Ole Miss, 28-21.

Auburn’s offense was brutal for most of the game once again, as quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] had under 50 passing yards until late in the fourth quarter.

The rushing attack was decent, but was outpaced by Ole Miss by 70 yards.

The Tigers’ defense was able to hold a very good Ole Miss offense to just four scores, but the offense couldn’t help them out as Auburn lost its fourth straight SEC game.

Here are some of the best plays from the loss.

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart will try to make LSU win a springboard at Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart needed a reason to believe they can achieve big at Ole Miss. The LSU win gave them that source of hope.

Lane Kiffin and Jaxson Dart finally got a signature win in 2023. Ole Miss won the Magnolia Bowl Saturday night in wild fashion, prevailing 55-49 over LSU at home.

Dart completed 26-of-39 passes for 389 yards to go with four touchdowns. On the ground, he added 50 more yards on seven carries and a score, outdueling LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Both teams combined for 1,343 yards of total offense, 14 touchdowns, two late lead changes, and strong individual performances from both quarterbacks.

This win could not have come at a better time for Kiffin and Dart. The Rebels were coming off a deflating loss at Alabama last week. It seems Kiffin is either on the hot seat or looking for another job every week according to some pundits, so shutting them up is important.

The Rebels were rewarded for their victory in both polls, ascending to No. 16 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

The Rebels host Arkansas to complete a two-game homestand on Saturday.

College Football Week 5 Winners and Losers: Ole Miss and Notre Dame bounce back, LSU still haunted by defense

We’re approaching the midway point of the season, and no team has truly separated from the pack.

Nothing good lasts forever, and that includes the college football season, which approaches its midway point this week.

The 2023 season feels particularly puzzling so far. No one has really separated from the pack, and while some top teams struggled during Week 5 on Saturday in USC, Georgia and Notre Dame, all ultimately escaped with wins.

Other top teams like Michigan and Oregon haven’t really faced significant tests, at all.

We’re still trying to make sense of it all, and it feels like we could be heading toward a College Football Playoff race filled with chaos, chalk or anything in between.

For now, here are the winners and losers from Week 5 of the college football season.

Fans loved Ole Miss’ hilariously unhinged Twitter response to win over LSU

Hilarious and horrifying all at once.

The Saturday night matchup between No. 13 LSU and No. 20 Ole Miss did not disappoint. It was wild and chaotic and a high-scoring thriller with scarce defense and a total of five punts.

Ole Miss came out on top, 55-49, after surviving the Tigers’ comeback effort. Quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for nearly 400 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns, as Ole Miss put up 706 total yards to LSU’s 637 in one of the most exciting games we’ve seen this season.

And while Ole Miss fans rushed the field after the win, the team’s account on X, formerly Twitter, might have had the best reaction. Following the win, the Ole Miss football Twitter account absolutely roasted LSU with an unhinged and remixed video featuring Tigers head coach Brian Kelly, quarterback Walker Howard — who transferred to Ole Miss from LSU after last season — and a bunch of mocking emojis.

Just see for yourself:

It’s hilarious and horrifying all at once, but Ole Miss collected more than one W on Saturday. And college football fans totally loved the reaction.

Former Trojan Michael Trigg is no longer with Ole Miss football team

The USC “Rebels” — Lane Kiffin, Jaxson Dart, and Michael Trigg — are all struggling in Oxford this season. The Ole Miss offense is stuck.

Junior tight end Michael Trigg is no longer with the Ole Miss football team. Ole Miss confirmed the news with the Daily Journal Tuesday afternoon. Trigg, who transferred from USC in January of 2022, is no longer listed on the team’s roster.

Trigg joined the Rebels as a highly-touted member of a 2022 transfer portal class that was highlighted by him, USC teammate Jaxson Dart, and former TCU running back Zachary Evans.

Trigg appeared in 10 games over the course of two seasons with the Rebels, catching 21 passes for 221 yards and four touchdowns while missing time due to injury. The Ole Miss offense simply hasn’t been able to thrive with Dart and Trigg and a number of other transfers. Lane Kiffin has struggled to unlock his offense’s potential in both 2022 and 2023.

Trigg was the No. 130 overall prospect in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports composite, and has tons of potential. However, leaving the program in the middle of the season isn’t the best look to be sure.

Trigg has a ton of talent, so it’ll be interesting to see where he lands in 2024 and beyond with two years of eligibility left.

As for Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin, the Rebels (3-1, 0-1 SEC) next take the field against LSU (3-1, 2-0) on Saturday (6 p.m. Eastern time, ESPN).
