Oklahoma and Brent Venables lost to a team whose fans want the coach to be fired

One Oklahoma writer viewed this loss to West Virginia as ‘rock bottom.’ WVU fans want coach Neal Brown fired. No one was happy.

It was a game in which fans of one team were hate-watching the game, and the fans of the other team wanted the head coach to be fired.

The fans who hate-watched the game saw their team lose.

The fans who wanted their coach to be fired saw their team win.

Absolutely no one was happy before, during, and after Oklahoma’s 23-20 loss to West Virginia on Saturday.

West Virginia benched former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels, who plainly struggled and has been swallowed up in a miserable year at WVU. Yet, the Mountaineers were still able to score when they had to, rallying from 10-0 and 20-13 deficits to beat Brent Venables and Oklahoma. The Sooners are not yet bowl-eligible. They still have to win another game.

West Virginia vs Oklahoma Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma running game has been just okay – it hasn’t been good enough.

It was no coincidence that the Sooner O wasn’t what it should’ve been last year when the ground game didn’t roll. Rhamondre Stevenson was eligible, the ground attack took things up a few notches and the offense blew up.

Stevenson is now a New England Patriot, the Sooners didn’t hit the 200-yard mark against Tulane and Nebraska, and the O didn’t do everything it should. That’s not to say they couldn’t run – they averaged over five yards per carry against the Huskers – but overall the team with this much talent should be doing even more.

Combine that and the lack of downfield plays – OU is averaging just 10.7 yards per completion – and there’s a glitch.

West Virginia’s defensive front lives in the backfield, the run defense is allowing just 102 yards per game, and the D is the best in America in the red zone. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma Will Win

West Virginia is one of the worst teams in the nation in turnover margin.

It lost to Maryland on four giveaways and a -4 turnover margin, and last week is almost ruined a terrific performance against Virginia Tech with two giveaways.

As good as the Mountaineer D is, it has just one takeaway. It’s going to take a whole lot more than that to get this done.

And yeah, the Oklahoma offense isn’t the unstoppable force it should be. It’s still fantastic, the yards are still there, the wins are still coming, and there aren’t mistakes.

There might not be a whole lot of risk, but there are rewards – the Sooners lead the Big 12 in turnover margin.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia has the experience, the defensive front and the ability to pull this off if it can just not be -2 or worse in turnover margin.

The defensive front will be effective and the offensive line will have a good game, but for OU, the steady production of the attack will be enough.

No, this might not be a perfect Sooner team, but it’s winning. It’ll be rocky, but the offense will come through when needed.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners were able to win the first time back in early January even though they didn’t shoot well and made a whole lot of mistakes. So how did they do it? They did just enough right to get by 75-71.

They did a wee bit more on the free throw line, they did a wee bit more on the glass, and they did a wee bit more from the field, even though the Mountaineers were great from three.

They have to repeat the performance.

West Virginia is terrific on the boards, and OU has to at least keep things even. The Mountaineers are also outstanding at bringing the pressure and forcing mistakes for easy baskets, and the Sooners just don’t turn the ball over often enough. However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Oklahoma’s three point defense is awful.

West Virginia lost in the first meeting despite going lights out from three, and it might be able to do that again against a defense that has been good at times at getting out and making a stop, but is also coming off a rough defensive day in the win over Iowa State.

At home, WVU needs to reverse the first game by doing its part to own the glass – it was -6 in rebounding margin the first time – and the defense has to keep the Sooners from generating easy points. OU jacked up a season-high 35 threes in that game, and that’s fine – WVU just needs to clean up the misses.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Baylor’s Big 12, but this is the battle for the No. 2 spot – for the moment.

The Mountaineers have won their last five Big 12 games, but they’re not necessarily a rock at home. They’ll be a bit better defensively in this – they’ll win the outside game – and they’ll be a bit tougher on the boards late to survive a fun back-and-forth battle.

Analyzing Oklahoma at West Virginia sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Oklahoma Sooners (17-11, 7-8 in Big 12) head to Morgantown, W.Va on Saturday for a 4 p.m. ET tip-off against the West Virginia Mountaineers (19-9, 7-8 in Big 12) in the WVU Coliseum.  We analyze the Oklahoma-West Virginia odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Oklahoma at West Virginia: Three things you need to know

  1. Oklahoma comes into the game off of a 65-51 dusting of the 2019 National Champion runner-up Texas Tech Red Raiders. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Sooners.
  2. West Virginia has lost two straight games and five of six games, including a 67-57 loss to the Texas Longhorns Feb. 24.
  3. These two teams have split each of their last four meetings with Oklahoma winning their lone season meeting, 69-59, on February 8.

Prediction

West Virginia 71, Oklahoma 60

Moneyline (ML)

Since 2016, Oklahoma (+310) has the second-worst road record in the Big XII (10-33) and fourth-worst mark against ranked opponents (10-23). West Virginia (-400) sits at No. 19 in the USA TODAY Sports men’s college basketball poll and is dominant at home with a 13-1 record in the WVU Coliseum. The payout for the Sooners isn’t high enough, and betting $400 to win $100 if the Mountaineers win outright is awful value.

PASS ON THE MONEYLINE in Oklahoma-West Virginia.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Like Oklahoma, West Virginia -7.5 (-121) is terrible on the road and awesome at home. I say that to give a reason for the 10-point whooping the Sooners put on the Mountaineers in Norman, Okla. +7.5 (even) in their first meeting. We should count on a more dialed-in West Virginia team, and one looking for revenge, at home on Saturday. They’ve covered five of their last seven games against Oklahoma and are 9-5 against the spread in home games. Also, against winning team West Virginia is 6-3 ATS at home this season.

BET WEST VIRGINIA -7.5 (-121).

Over/Under (O/U)

You either BET UNDER 135.5 (-110) or stay away from the total. The combined Over/Under record of the two teams is 19-47, and the Under has cashed in five of their last seven meetings. The Under is 9-2 in Sooners’ last 11 games as an underdog and 5-0 in Mountaineers’ last five games as a home favorite.
