Caleb McConnell, a Rutgers basketball legend, wins NBA G-League Championship with Oklahoma City Blue

Caleb McConnell wins the NBA G-League championship.

Former Rutgers basketball standout Caleb McConnell helped the Oklahoma City Blue make history this week. The Blue secured their first championship in team history by defeating the Maine Celtics in a best-of-three series, and McDonnell continued to be a lockdown defender.

While McConnell only played two minutes in the Blue’s 117-100 win on Monday, he added one offensive rebound to his resume. He was a mainstay in the lineup during the regular season, averaging 6.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Like he did at Rutgers, McDonnell thrived on defense.

In his first season with the Oklahoma Blue, the former two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year played in 32 games, starting 11. It is an experience that he did not take for granted.

“I am blessed to even get this experience to play beyond college in a top league like this,” McConnell told Rutgers Athletics. “I feel like I am just one step closer to achieving my dreams and aspirations. My first year in the NBA G-League was an awesome experience. I feel like this organization is run differently than other teams and I am just blessed to be a part of it.”

As McConnell prepares for a well-deserved offseason, he will look to build on his success. He averaged just under 20 minutes a game for the Blue. While his focus is on his professional career, McConnell has kept an eye on Rutgers basketball and is excited about what the future holds.

“I am so excited for next year, especially with some of the pieces we have coming in,” McConnell said. “Pikiell is bringing in all the right pieces. He deserves the best.”

Former Luke Kornet teammate Adam Mokoka reveals the recent origin of the ‘Korntest’

Adam Mokoka, a teammate of the Celtics center’s from their time with the Chicago Bulls, revealed Kornet developed the unorthodox method recently.

Boston Celtics backup center Luke Kornet has made an impression on his teammates with his intelligence, hard work, and sense of humor around the NBA, particularly during his time with the Chicago Bulls. The Celtics Wire recently caught up with fellow Bulls alum Adam Mokoka at a G League tilt between the Oklahoma City Blue (Mokoka’s current squad) and the Capitanes in Mexico City, and the French shooting guard had plenty of good things to say about his former teammate.

“He’s a really good guy on and off of the court,” shared Mokoka. “Luke is quiet, but he’s funny and really smart.”

“He was our team captain when I was there in Chicago,” added the Blue wing.

Mokoka is aware of Kornet’s unorthodox method of trying to stymie shooters on the perimeter — the so-called eclipse, Kornet Kontest, or Korntest, as it has been various dubbed — but has not tried it himself, at least yet.

“I’ve just seen it, he wasn’t doing it in Chicago,” explained the Paris native. “I feel like if it is working, it’s pretty smart.”

OKC Blue: Tre Mann scores 40 points, named to All-Showcase Team in 132-131 loss to G League’s Mad Ants

I think it’s safe to say Tre Mann found a rhythm in his two-day stay in Las Vegas.

It looks like the two-game getaway from the NBA did Tre Mann good.

While the OKC Blue lost to the G League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants in a heartbreaker, 132-131, on Thursday, Mann continued to dominate.

In 39 minutes, Mann scored 40 points on 13-of-26 shooting and 6-of-14 shooting from 3. In his two G League games, Mann scored 75 points on 25-of-44 (56.8%) shooting and went 13-of-24 (54.2%) from 3.

The two games were so impressive that Mann was named to the All-Showcase team. Mann returned to OKC on Friday and is available to play against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Here are some of the other notable performances from the game:

  • Robert Woodard II: 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 12 rebounds
  • DJ Wilson: 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists
  • Scotty Hopson: 21 points
  • Terry Taylor: 46 points on 20-of-24 shooting, 14 rebounds

OKC Thunder news: Tre Mann, Jaylin Williams assigned to G League’s OKC Blue

The news should not be surprising for Thunder fans.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Sunday that sophomore guard Tre Mann and rookie forward Jaylin Williams were assigned to the G League’s OKC Blue.

Neither move comes as a surprise. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault revealed the moves following their win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

Daigneault said the decision to assign Mann to the G League was a pre-planned move and was not made on a whim. The timing is odd though. Mann had his best game in a while against the Grizzlies. He finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 2-of-5 from 3 in 18 minutes.

When asked about the G League assignment, Mann said he’s embracing it as an opportunity to gain confidence and not viewing it as a demotion.

“Looking forward to it. Ready to go with the Blue,” Mann said. “Just grow. That’s my mindset going down there.”

Mann has struggled in his second season, regressing to 8.3 points on 38.1% shooting. From 3, Mann is shooting 28.8% on 4.6 attempts.

A quick reset with the Blue could do wonders for Mann as it gives him a platform to play more freely and not worry about minimizing risks.

OKC Thunder news: Jaylin Williams assigned to G League’s OKC Blue

The Thunder announced the roster move on Monday.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Monday they had assigned rookie forward Jaylin Williams to the G League’s OKC Blue.

After he played 11 minutes against the Memphis Grizzlies last week, the Thunder decided to reassign Williams to the Blue.

In six games with the Thunder, Williams is averaging 2.3 points on 35.7% shooting, two rebounds and 0.8 assists.

In eight games with the Blue, Williams is averaging 13.8 points on 61.5% shooting, 9.4 rebounds and six assists.
