Oklahoma makes final four teams in the running for Eastern Washington transfer Tanner Groves

Oklahoma has found themselves in the final four schools in the running for Eastern Washington transfer forward Tanner Groves.

Oklahoma basketball has a lost a lot in terms of players departing from the team since the end of last season in the transition from former head coach Lon Kruger to new head coach Porter Moser.

But, one very key addition could be on the way for the Sooners. On the same day both Alondes Williams and De’Vion Harmon entered the transfer portal, Eastern Washington transfer forward Tanner Groves has Oklahoma in his final four schools, per Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Groves burst on the scene to many with his big performance in this year’s NCAA Tournament against Kansas as it became clear that the redshirt junior would be an interesting candidate as someone who could make the jump to a bigger program.

Interestingly, another team to make the final cut for Groves is Oklahoma’s biggest rival in Texas under their new head coach in Chris Beard. Both Beard and Moser are just beginning their tenures in the Red River rivalry, but they already have a big time battle on their hands to try and land the services of the Eastern Washington big man.

Groves seems like a home run pickup for Moser and the Sooners should they land him, given the severe lack of players underneath right now on the roster. His 17 points and 8 rebounds per game would be a very welcomed addition to Oklahoma’s hopes for competing in the stingy Big 12 conference next season.

Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates on Groves as they become available.

Oklahoma hiring Drake’s Jennie Baranczyk as new head women’s basketball coach

Oklahoma is hiring Drake’s Jennie Baranczyk as the new head coach of the Sooners women’s basketball.

A little over three weeks after long-time Oklahoma women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale announced her retirement, the Sooners have found her replacement.

Former Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk was officially announced as the new leader of the program on Saturday in an official release.

At just 39 years old, Baranczyk built Drake into one of the very best programs in the Missouri Valley Conference, winning the league in 2017, 2018 and 2019. She was also named the coach of the year in the conference in both 2017 and 2018. She previously spent time at Kansas State, Marquette and Colorado as an assistant before taking over with the Bulldogs in 2012.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named the next head coach for the University of Oklahoma’s women’s basketball program and follow the highly successful and much-admired Sherri Coale,” said Baranczyk in the release. “My coaching philosophy is based upon the most powerful human emotion to me and that is love. The players who put on this jersey must love the game, love to compete and love OU.

“We are going to compete at the highest level on the court and in the classroom. We will play hard, play together and be fun to watch. I’m looking forward to being at Oklahoma where there are amazing people and where we can – and will – compete for championships.”

As a player, Baranczyk (then by the name of Jennie Lillis) was one of the elite players in the history of the Iowa Hawkeyes. From 2000-2004, she was an all-Big Ten selection three times and graduated as the only player in program history inside the top 10 in all five categories of points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

Now, she takes over the helm for the legendary Coale to try and get Oklahoma women’s basketball back to prestige it once had. Athletic director Joe Castiglione released a statement on the new hire:

“This is a truly exciting day for our university and athletics department, as we welcome Jennie Baranczyk as our new head women’s basketball coach,” said Castiglione. “Her track record of overseeing creative and effective offenses, and producing high win totals, conference championships and postseason appearances during her time at Drake certainly appealed to our search committee as it evaluated the very competitive candidate pool. But her mastery of the head coaching role extends far beyond the court, and it’s clear that her personal and professional values align with ours.

“Jennie prioritizes the overall well-being of everyone in her program, is passionate about empowering her student-athletes and recognizes that a program is only as good as its people. She is family-oriented and community-minded, both of which will help her generate enthusiasm among our fans and as she works to return our program to Big 12 and national prominence. We are thrilled that she and her husband Scott and kids Eli, Jordi and Hope have joined the OU family, and we are so eager for their arrival in Norman.”

University of Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. also offered some words on the hire:

“We’re thrilled to have Coach Baranczyk join the Sooner Nation,” said OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. “Her enthusiastic coaching style fits perfectly in our culture and her track record of excellence will serve our student-athletes and our program well into the future. The Baranczyks will make a wonderful addition to our OU family.”

An offseason of change for both Oklahoma basketball programs is starting to have both teams take more shape, as they now each have their new head coaches after Porter Moser was named the new leader of the men’s team a week ago.

Oklahoma offers four-star center Jonas Aidoo out of Charlotte, North Carolina

Oklahoma basketball offered four-star center Jonas Aidoo from Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday morning.

Oklahoma basketball is in the early stages under the new coaching regime led by Porter Moser and things are already moving along. On the same day he was officially introduced, Moser landed the commitment of three-star point guard Alston Mason. Now, on Saturday, the Sooners have officially put out an offer to four-star center Jonas Aidoo from Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Aidoo has already received a medley of other offers with Kansas and West Virginia being the other Big 12 programs in the running to land him. Some other notable offers include Alabama, Marquette, Houston and Tennessee. He was actually previously committed to the Golden Eagles, but decommitted back in March when coach Steve Wojciechowski was let go.

Big men underneath has been an Achilles heel for Oklahoma in recent seasons, so Moser finding a way to get ahold of a strong one right out of the gates would be a pretty big win. Aidoo would be a very nice pickup should they manage to land him.

Former Oklahoma forward Victor Iwuakor transferring to UNLV

Former Oklahoma forward Victor Iwuakor will be transferring to UNLV to join former assistant Carlin Hartman.

A former Sooner has found his new home as sophomore forward Victor Iwuakor is heading to become a member of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, per a team release.

Iwuakor was reported as entering the transfer portal just last Thursday, so it didn’t take him much time to find his new landing spot. This move seems entirely logical due to the fact that his former assistant coach Carlin Hartman is also headed to Las Vegas next season and the new head coach of the program is Kevin Kruger, son of former Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger.

Needless to say, the familiarity is there for Iwuakor as he heads to a situation with coaches who know his skill set and how to properly utilize him in the coming seasons. A lightning rod player off of the bench, his athleticism was as good as anybodys. With more opportunity and refinement, it is entirely within reason to think that Iwuakor can be a quality contributor for UNLV moving forward.

Oklahoma adds former Texas assistant K.T. Turner to coaching staff

Oklahoma basketball added former Texas assistant coach K.T. Turner to the coaching staff on Monday, according to multiple reports.

The first addition to the Oklahoma basketball coaching staff under new head coach Porter Moser has been made as the Sooners are bringing in former Texas associate head coach K.T. Turner on as an assistant.

Turner spent last season with the Longhorns under Shaka Smart, even serving as the interim coach for one game (ironically against Oklahoma) when Smart was out due to COVID-19 protocols, after spending the previous seven on the staff at SMU.

Known as a good recruiter with great ties to the region, Turner looks to be a very nice addition as an asset to Moser to help him recruit in a region he has not spent the bulk of his career in. On paper, this looks like a very nice hire. Someone who does seem to like it is De’Vion Harmon, who took a page out of Lincoln Riley’s book with the eyeballs emoji tweet just after it was reported.

While it is not clear what the exact role Turner will have on the staff, it seems reasonable to think he may be the lead assistant under Moser similar to what Carlin Hartman was for Lon Kruger in recent seasons. Hartman left to join the staff at UNLV a week ago.

Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates on the ever-changing Oklahoma basketball program as the offseason continues to roll on.
