Photos of Ohio State women’s ice hockey’s national title win

Enjoy the reflection. #GoBucks

In case you missed it, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team beat the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday to win the program’s second title in three years.

It was a nip and tuck affair, with one lone goal meaning the difference between winning and losing for the Buckeyes with a 1-0 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers and further cemented OSU as the nation’s top women’s ice hockey program at the moment.

The win set off quite the celebration on the ice and the game made for some pretty amazing high-resolution photos that we’re sharing with you. Check out some of the best pictures from Ohio State’s national-title winning performance vs. Wisconsin in the Frozen Four over the weekend and reminisce being on top of the college hockey universe.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey wins second national title in program history

Congrats to the women’s ice hockey team! #GoBucks

For the second time in three years, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is national champions. The Buckeyes were able to outlast the Wisconsin Badgers in a 1-0 win in Durham, New Hampshire, on Sunday evening.

The game was one where the goalies and defense owned the day. The first two periods saw both teams button down on defense with little to show in way of offensive chances for teams that knew each other all too well. Then, in the third period, things opened up a bit.

Still, It took until the 7:12 mark of the last period for Ohio State’s leading scorer, Joy Dunne, to fire a shot past Badgers goalie, Ava McNaughton, and put the Buckeyes up 1-0. Things would continue with Wisconsin emptying its net in an attempt to get the extra attacker and get an equalizer, but OSU goalie, Raygan Kirk, continued to shine, adding to her 27 saves for the game and helping the Buckeyes to the title.

“Very humbled to be sitting here,” said Ohio State coach Nadine Muzerall. “First, congrats to the players and all the hard work they put in throughout the year. Congratulations to Wisconsin. That was one hell of a game. Both teams really battled hard.

“We knew it was going to be a tough challenge because they have so much offensive power. We focused early on their transition side of the game and not giving up odd-man rushes and controlling the neutral zone. We did that very well as we were getting our chances as were they. I was very proud of our defensive side of the game and very proud of the way they punched back after a tough loss the last time we played against Wisconsin. I think it showed a lot of character of not letting that get to them on this high stage.”

For Ohio State, it was the culmination of a team that was ranked No. 1 for most of the season. It was also a little revenge against the Badgers who beat the Buckeyes 2-1 last season in the Frozen Four national title game and also knocked off OSU in this season’s WCHA championship 6-3.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey to play for national title

Three years in a row! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team will be playing for a national title for the third consecutive time courtesy of a 4-1 win over Clarkson on Friday night.

Clarkson actually got on the board first early in the first period with at the 17:35 mark, making it a needed comeback story for the Scarlet and Gray. Things stayed close, with OSU equalizing at later in the period to make it 1-1 on a Makenna Webster goal.

Things would stay that way through the second period and on into the last stanza, with the Buckeyes getting the all-important go-ahead goal from Sloane Matthews with just 6:48 to play. From there, it seemed like it was survive and advance.

However, Joy Dunne added a goal as a power play expired to give Ohio State a 3-1 lead with just 3:23 left after a barrage of attempts on the man advantage. Hadley Harmetz would add an empty-netter to completely seal the deal with 1:54 to play and OSU would be on its way.

It’ll be a familiar opponent for Ohio State. The Buckeyes lost to Wisconsin, 1-0, in the national championship game last season and will be looking to get back at the Badgers who will be opposite OSU on Sunday night for all the confetti.

Wisconsin is the No. 2 seed, with Ohio State holding the No. 1 seed. The two have played five times this season with the Buckeyes holding a 3-2 advantage, but having lost the last two games against Bucky.

Game on.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey to take part in fourth-straight Frozen Four Friday

Another shot at a title for the women’s ice hockey program. #GoBucks

It’s easy to get spoiled with the recent run of the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team, but it’s the last thing anyone on the team should be thinking about after the Buckeyes secured their fourth-straight trip to the Frozen Four with a decisive 9-0 win over Minnesota-Duluth over the weekend.

The Buckeyes will now travel to Durham, New Hampshire, on Friday to begin its quest for a second national title in three years as the No. 1 overall seed with a 33-4 record. OSU will face No. 4 seed Clarkson Friday at 4 p.m. ET and then will take on the winner of No. 2 seed Wisconsin vs. No. 3 seed Colgate if it gets into its third-straight national championship game. The Badgers beat the Buckeyes in last season’s national title matchup.

The national championship game is set for 4 p.m. ET in Durham, New Hampshire, as well on Sunday, March 24.

Head coach Nadine Muzerall has turned the OSU women’s ice hockey team into the best program in the country and we should all continue to take notice and root the ladies on towards a potential national championship.

Ohio State’s Sophie Jaques wins Patty Kazmaier Award for best player in women’s hockey

What an honor! #GoBucks

Ohio State women’s ice hockey defenseman, Sophie Jacques, was named the winner of the Patty Kasmaier Award, handed out annually to the best women’s ice hockey player.

Jacques is of course known for her stifling defense but has been a force on the offensive end as well, often jumping up in the play to provide an advantage on the attack for the nation’s No. 1 team. She has tallied 24 goals and 48 points on the year, the best in the country for a defenseman.

The Toronto native beat out the other finalists, Alina Mueller of Northeastern and Danielle Serdachny of Colgate. She is the first-ever winner of the award for Ohio State and is now trying to polish off some individual notoriety with a national championship on Monday night.

“I am extremely honored and humbled to receive the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award,” Jaques said in a statement. “I am grateful to be a recipient of an award named after the incredible athlete, scholar, and human being, Patty Kazmaier. While this is an individual award, I have been supported by a whole team of people throughout this season and my career at Ohio State, and I owe this all to my coaches and teammates over the last five years. Receiving this award is something I never even could have imagined was possible.”

Head coach Nadine Muzerall has got to witness Jacques’ continue her improvement during her years in the scarlet and gray.

“I am overwhelmed with happiness for her and all the hard work she has put in over the years,” Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall said. “Seeing her develop as a player and as a human, I am just so glad that it is nationally recognized that she is the best player in the country. I think this demonstrates how coming to Ohio State can help young women develop and its hopefully just the start of what we can do here as Buckeyes.”

This is a massive achievement for an Ohio State athlete and one that should be celebrated probably more than it will be. Congratulations are more than in order and well deserved.

Ohio State women’s hockey advances to Frozen Four national championship game

Moving on for a shot at back-to-back national titles! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s hockey team will get a chance to defend its national championship thanks to a win over 3-0 win over Northeastern in a Frozen Four semifinal Friday.

The Buckeyes drew first blood just 1:56 into the contest when Sloan Matthews stuffed in a rebound out in front of the goal. Just like that, Ohio State quickly had the advantage in an all-important first goal with massive stakes on the line.

Neither team was able to get one into the back of the net the rest of the first period, but OSU struck again in the second with Makenna Webster’s one-timer from the slot to make it 2-0.

Hardley Hartmetz made it 3-0 late in the second period with a screened slapper from inside the blue line, and all of a sudden the Buckeyes could begin to feel what was coming. The last period was about shutting things down and making the Huskies work for contested shots, and OSU held on without giving up a goal to move on to the national championship game on Sunday.

Ohio State will play at 4 p.m. Sunday against the winner of Minnesota and Wisconsin with a shot at a back-to-back national championship.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey team advances to Frozen Four

In case you missed it, the OSU women’s ice hockey squad is on to the Frozen Four! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is on schedule to defend its national championship from a year ago after beating Quinnipiac 5-2 in a first-round NCAA Tournament matchup on Saturday for a spot in the women’s Frozen Four.

The Buckeyes join Northeastern, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in Duluth, Minnesota, and will be making their third-straight appearance in the Frozen Four. The way Ohio State did it on Saturday took a little bit but ended up much more decisive than previous runs.

Quinnipiac got on the board first just before the first period ended and took a 1-0 lead into the second stanza. OSU would bring things even though on the power play halfway through the second period on a goal by Gabby Rosenthal. That was followed up quickly thereafter by another goal at 16:00 by Lauren Bernard to give Ohio State a 2-1 advantage entering the third period.

From there, the floodgates opened a bit with the Buckeyes scoring three more goals en route to a comfortable 5-2 win.

OSU will now face Northeastern in the first game of a single-elimination, four-team format. The game against the Huskies is set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday. A win would advance Ohio State to the national championship game against the winner of Wisconsin vs. Minnesota next Sunday, March 19, at 4 p.m. ET.

Ohio State women’s ice hockey advances to WCHA Final Faceoff

On to the WCHA tournament semifinals for the OSU women’s ice hockey team. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team will be attempting to follow up its first-ever WCHA regular-season title with a tournament title after advancing to the WCHA Final Faceoff with a 2-1 win over Bemidji State Saturday at the OSU ice rink.

The best-of-three series didn’t need a third game after the Buckeyes took care of business Friday night in a 4-1 victory over Bemidji State. The win moves OSU’s record to an impressive 30-4-2 overall, and a 23-4-1 WCHA mark.

Here’s how the win unfolded on Saturday:

  • Freshman Sloane Matthews got the scoring started for the Buckeyes just 2:00 into the game by finding the back of the net. It was a one-timer by Matthews off of a feed from Kenzie Hauswirth to give OSU the 1-0 lead.

  • Neither team would score again 16:17 left in the third period when Jenn Gardiner found the back of the net off of assists from Gabby Rosenthal and Sophie Jaques.

  • Ohio State goalie Amanda Thiele almost had a clean sheet, making 15 saves on the day but finally allowing a goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game on the last shot she faced. The Buckeyes were able to salt away the last 2:23 of the game to close out the 2-1 victory.

The WCHA Final Faceoff semifinals will begin Friday, March 3, with Ohio State taking on No. 4 seed Minnesota.

Ohio State women’s hockey wins first ever WCHA Tournament

With a 1-0 overtime win, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team took home its first ever WCHA Tournament championship.

The Ohio State women’s hockey team is WCHA Tournament Champs for the first time in program history, but it sure didn’t come easy.

The Buckeyes have been in position to hoist a trophy before, but after 12 WCHA Final Faceoff appearances and two Championship appearances, they can finally put some hardware in the trophy case.

OSU needed one whale of a game from its netminder as Wisconsin had more shots on goal through 60 minutes of a scoreless contest that had to be settled in overtime. Goalie Andrea Braendli stopped a whopping 40 saves in regulation, a season high. But she wasn’t the only goalie stonewalling opponents.

Wisconsin goalie Kristen Campbell was also fantastic, making 26 saves through regulation, and both teams had to take their chances with sudden-death overtime.

The Badgers controlled large portions of the game, outshooting and outskating OSU for a lot of the contest, but this night would have a familiar hero emerge at an opportune time.

For the second-straight night, Ohio State’s Tatum Skaggs managed to get the game-winner just 4:24 into OT, propelling the Buckeyes to the 1-0 win and title.

Congrats to the lady Buckeyes. They now await their fate in the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament.
