Former Ohio State guard Taylor Mikesell has a classy response to one fan

Don’t try to give Taylor Mikesell a compliment at the expense of another player because she’s not having it. #GoBucks

Taylor Mikesell is a classy individual.

After helping lead the Ohio State women’s basketball team for the past two seasons, Mikesell was selected by the Indiana Fever as the first pick in the second round (No. 13 overall) in the 2023 WNBA draft. Unfortunately, she didn’t get much of a chance to show what she can do on the court and was released before the start of the season.

With only 12 roster spots among 12 teams in the WNBA, there are many good players who don’t make the cut. One fan tried to give Mikesell a compliment that didn’t go over so well with the former Buckeye.

In a since-deleted tweet, the fan showed a clip of Fever guard Lexie Hull air balling a three-point attempt with some disparaging comments about Hull while stating that the Fever could still have Mikesell. Hull was Indiana’s first-round pick in the 2022 WNBA draft.

Mikesell didn’t take kindly to the tweet and called the fan out saying “Lexie is a great player and a phenomenal person, this is completely unnecessary. She earned that spot and is more than deserving!”

What an absolute class act and honestly it would be good to see more athletes stand up to the online trolls who are oh-so brave behind the computer screen. Clearly, Mikesell got her point across as the tweet was taken down.

Mikesell is a very good basketball player and she’ll have other opportunities to play the game she loves. More than that, she is an even better human being. In a world of keyboard warriors, these are the acts that make the online world a better place. Well done Taylor. Well done.

Ohio State women’s basketball adds Kentucky transfer

Another lift out of the transfer portal for the Ohio State women’s basketball program. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team has been rather active in the transfer portal this season. The Buckeyes added Duke guard Celeste Taylor and Michigan State forward Taiyier Parks to already boost the talent level on the roster this offseason, and now there’s another addition.

Kentucky guard Kennedy Cambridge on Wednesday committed to Ohio State after entering the transfer portal after just one season with the Wildcats where she averaged 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in 19 games during her freshman season. In other words, she will still be a work in progress for the Buckeyes as she continues to develop her game in the Big Ten.

And as a 4-star prospect coming out of high school, there’s no reason to believe that she could be part of a significant future for the Buckeye women.

With what OSU has coming back, there are several preseason predictions that have the Buckeyes as a top ten to top five type program when looking at the crystal ball for the 2023-2024 season. The additions Ohio State has made via the transfer portal can only enhance those views.

Former Ohio State women’s basketball guard Hevynne Bristow transferring to James Madison

A former OSU women’s hoops player is on the move. #GoBucks

The transfer news continues to trickle out, and the latest comes from the Ohio State women’s basketball program. On Wednesday, James Madison announced that former Buckeye guard, Hevynne Bristow, is joining the program as a graduate transfer after spending her last three years in Columbus.

Out of Brooklyn, New York, Bristow came to OSU after one season at Providence. She was thrust into action during what was supposed to be a transition, redshirt year, but never really carved out a role on a Buckeye squad the next two years after.

Last year was the campaign Bristow contributed to the most, appearing in 29 games but averaging just 3.6 points and 3.0 rebounds on 10.5 minutes of action. As the team made a run in the NCAA Tournament, all the way to the Elite 8, Bristow’s minutes seemed to evaporate.

For her part, James Madison head coach Sean O’Regan was happy to add Bristow to the team.

“Hevynne is a special player, person, and athlete,” O’Regan said. “She got to see us up close and in person when we played Ohio State in the NCAA tournament, and she could really see herself here with us. I have watched her since she was a junior in high school and her potential is off the charts. I’m super excited to get her on the court with us and help her get to where she belongs.”

We, of course, wish nothing but the best as Bristow takes the next step in her college basketball career.

Former Ohio State guard Taylor Mikesell waived by Indiana Fever

We’re sure Mikesell will land on her feet somewhere else down the line. #GoBucks

Things are a little different in the WNBA than the good ‘ole fashioned NBA. Ohio State guard, Taylor Mikesell, was selected by the Indiana Fever as the first pick in the second round (No. 13 overall) of the 2023 WNBA draft. That would be more than good enough for an NBA team to invest in you and let things play out with development and plenty of opportunity.

In the WNBA though, with only 12 roster spots among 12 teams, not so much. Mikesell, unfortunately, found that out on Wednesday when she was released from the Fever just a couple of weeks after hearing her name called in the draft.

All indications and reports suggest that Mikesell had a very good camp when she got to Indy, but it wasn’t enough. It can likely be chalked up to the situation and hard roster moves that must be made in the WNBA.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Unfortunately for Mikesell, there really isn’t a soft landing spot with each team in the league dealing with the same roster constraints and similar tough decisions of their own.

But don’t give up on the Massillon, Ohio, native. She has the sharpshooting skills that someone will likely want to give another look to down the road.

We wish her nothing but the best.

Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon earns spot on Team USA

Congrats to another very cool experience for Cotie McMahon. #GoBucks

Ohio State women’s basketball’s Cotie McMahon has officially earned a spot on the U19 USA Basketball squad. We told you about her being invited to the team trials last week and thought she had a good chance of making the team. After all, she already has a history of performing well with one of the Team USA junior teams and was one of the best freshmen in women’s college basketball last year.

And now, after going through the paces with 23 other players in Colorado Springs, Colorado, McMahon will again get to wear the Red, White, and Blue for the purpose of participating in the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup. The Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year was one of 12 players selected to be a part of the team.

The World Cup is set to take place July 15 through 23 in Madrid, Spain. Training camp to get the team prepared for the trip is set to begin in Colorado Springs on July 2.

Congrats to McMahon and we’ll be cheering her on to help take home the gold.

Ohio State women’s basketball forward Cotie McMahon invited to Team USA U19 trials

Good luck to McMahon! #GoBucks

In a very cool opportunity, Ohio State women’s basketball forward, Cotie McMahon, has been invited to participate in the Team USA U10 World Cup team trials for 2023. It’s the second straight year McMahon has had the opportunity to compete for a spot on Team USA. She represented the U18 team that won the Women’s Americas championship in June of last year.

The team trials are set to begin on Friday, and you have to think that the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year has a more than decent chance of making the squad. She averaged 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 rebounds during 29.1 minutes of action this past season. A season in which she helped Ohio State reach the Elite 8 before falling to Virginia Tech.

If McMahon makes the team, the U19 USA squad will begin competing against the world’s best in Spain in mid-July. Team USA is set to begin play in Pool B and start its journey against Mali.

We’ll keep you posted on how McMahon does and if she makes her way onto the team wearing the red, white, and blue. We like her chances.

Ohio State women’s basketball get a commit from top graduate transfer

A BOOM for the OSU women’s hoops team #GoBucks

After a run to the Elite 8 for [autotag]Ohio State women’s basketball[/autotag], there is plenty of buzz around the program. Head coach [autotag]Kevin McGuff[/autotag] has his team trending in the right direction.

Even though they lost leading scorer Taylor Mikesell to the WNBA, a majority of their large contributors will return.

The shoes to fill Mikesell’s void are large but McGuff went to the transfer portal and found a replacement in former Duke guard [autotag]Celeste Taylor[/autotag]. The graduate transfer averaged 11.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.2 steals for the Blue Devils this past season.

The addition of Taylor puts the 2023-24 squad in good hands and should make another run at a Big Ten title along with a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Photo gallery of Taylor Mikesell at the WNBA draft

Congrats to Taylor Mikesell on a fantastic night at the WNBA draft. #GoBucks

Ohio State guard Taylor Mikesell realized a lifelong dream on Monday night when she was selected 13th in the WNBA draft, the first selection in the second round.

In a nod to what WNBA officials thought about her, the leading scoring from OSU’s team last season was one of 15 players on hand in New York to take part in person with the draft. And, yeah, it was a memorable night with red carpet, stage photos and more.

Not only did Mikesell get to walk across the stage, but she posed with her peers and other WNBA personnel in photo opportunities, and it just so happens that we have a lot of them to share with you.

Here are some of the best photos of Taylor Mikesell at the 2023 WNBA draft.

Ohio State guard Taylor Mikesell drafted No. 13 overall in WNBA draft

Taylor Mikesell won’t be far from Columbus when she puts on her WNBA uniform. #GoBucks

Taylor Mikesell has been drafted at No. 13 by the Indiana Fever in the WNBA draft — one pick into the second round on Monday night.

Mikesell was a spark for the Ohio State women’s basketball team from the moment she returned to her home state. The Canton native started her career in Maryland and headed west to Oregon before realizing home is where it’s at. The sharpshooter helped the Buckeyes reach the Sweet 16 in 2022 and the Elite Eight in 2023.

Now she’ll stay relatively close to home, heading west about three hours on Interstate 70 to play professionally in Indianapolis.

Mikesell joins a star-studded draft class for Indiana. The Fever had two first-round picks this year. With the No. 1 pick, Indiana took the best player in the draft, Aliyah Boston from South Carolina. With the  No. 7 pick, Indiana went a few miles south and selected Grace Berger from the University of Indiana.

The Fever is building a young nucleus that should be formidable for years to come.
