Ohio State vs Wisconsin Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

You 100% sure this Ohio State defense is where it needs to be?

It was the biggest topic of conversation around the program this offseason – could the D rise up to a national title level?

It’s been great so far, but Notre Dame, Arkansas State, and Toledo aren’t proper tests to see just how strong this group really is, and now the Badgers are showing up after getting everything rolling against New Mexico State in a 66-7 win.

No, Wisconsin isn’t going to throw for 335 yards like it did last week, but it’s going to pound, and pound, and pound some more. Get ready for the game to slow down a bit as the O tries to hold on to the ball for well over 35 minutes.

And then there’s the other side.

Wisconsin’s defense might not be the best in the nation like it was last year – at least statistically – but it held down Cameron Ward and the Washington State offense, gave up one decent drive against Illinois State, and so far has allowed just one touchdown pass.

Notre Dame was able to hold up against the Buckeye onslaught, and Wisconsin’s defense is even better.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State isn’t screwing up.

One. The Buckeye offense lost just one fumble against Arkansas State, and that’s it for the turnovers. One. The team got hit with just one penalty in the 77-21 annihilation of a solid Toledo team.

How did Wisconsin lose to Washington State? It turned it over three times and committed 11 penalties. This isn’t a team – or a program – that reacts well to adversity. All it might take is one giveaway and a few third-and-long moments to screw it all up.

Get up early with a few scoring drives, make Graham Mertz have to throw to get Wisconsin back in the game, and bad things are going to happen.

On the other side, as good as the Wisconsin defense might be, it’s about to get hit hard by the Ohio State offense that’s got the balance, the line, and the ability to take over right away.

To do that, it starts with …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

CJ Stroud. 73% completion rate, 941 yards, 11 touchdowns, no interceptions.

Even with Jaxon Smith-Njigba hurting, the machine keeps on rolling, TreyVeon Henderson and Milan Williams are running well, and the offense is operating at a whole other level.

Wisconsin will have a few decent drives with Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi pounding away early, but it’ll all come apart late in the second quarter.

The Buckeyes will start well, sputter as the Badger defense settles in, and then …

Turnover. The Ohio State D will come up with a pick, Stroud will connect on a TD pass three plays later, and that will be that.

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes are crushing from three.

They might have lost to Purdue last time out, but they still hit 14 threes. Okay, so it took 35 tries to get there, but it was their fourth straight game and fifth of the last six with double-digit made threes.

Wisconsin is strong at defending overall and it’s decent at stopping the three, but it’s not amazing at it. What it doesn’t do is force a whole lot of mistakes and take the ball away enough, and Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country at not screwing up. But …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin is even better at not messing up – it’s third in the nation and tops in the Big Ten in the fewest turnovers per game.

That defense is still the defense. It leads the conference, it’s still great at slowing everything down to a stop at times. Yeah there were issues against Michigan – everyone has issues against Michigan – but it clamped down allowing fewer than 70 points in every game but three.

Ohio State doesn’t force mistakes, and it doesn’t move the ball around well enough. You have to do both to get past the Badgers.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State will want to get moving, and the Badgers won’t let that happen. The biggest problem will be the lack of made threes from the Buckeyes. They don’t have to generate at least 30 points from beyond the arc to pull this off, but that’s when things are working.

Wisconsin has yet to allow anyone to hit ten three-pointers this year.

Ohio State (11-2, 1-1) has played its fair share of tough opponents to begin the season, but after a 71-65 win vs. No. 17 Kentucky, the Buckeyes were unable to pick up a win at home, losing 67-59 vs. No. 16 West Virginia on Sunday. While the Buckeyes had a 37-31 lead at halftime, the team had trouble finding the bottom of the net in the second half and were outscored 36-22. Ohio State shot just 31.3 percent for the game and 33.3 from three-point range. The team was led by Kaleb Wesson, who had 17 points and nine rebounds.

Wisconsin (8-5, 1-1) cruised to victory on Tuesday with a 65-37 win over Rider. The team has won by 15 or more points over the last three games. Wisconsin’s offense hit its stride in the second half, scoring 20 points in only five and a half minutes. The flurry of scoring to open the second half was led by three straight three-pointers from Brad Davison. Nate Reuvers led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Aleem Ford also scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The Badgers shot 43.6 percent from the field and held Rider to just 24.6 percent.

Many were unsure if it would happen, but with a 38-17 win over Minnesota, last weekend, Wisconsin and Ohio State will face-off for the second time this season. However, this time it will be for more than a regular-season win. This time it is for the Big Ten Championship on Saturday in Indianapolis. The Badgers have revenge on their minds after a 38-7 beatdown at the hands of the Buckeyes on Oct. 26. A win by No. 8 Wisconsin over No. 1 Ohio State could change the outcome of the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State vs. Wisconsin

  • When: Saturday, December 7
  • Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
  • TV: FOX
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Wisconsin has been waiting weeks to get a second chance at facing the Ohio State after a demoralizing loss showed many of the team’s flaws. Head coach Paul Chryst had a lot of positive things to say about the improvement of his team since its loss to the Buckeyes. During his weekly press conference, Chryst said his team is playing at a higher level than the last time the two teams met. That certainly looked to be the case after the Badgers dominated Minnesota.

Whether it’s October or December, the Badgers offense does its best when Heisman hopeful Jonathan Taylor finds success on the ground. Taylor has a chip on his shoulder after being held to a season-low 52 yards rushing in the first matchup. Quarterback Jack Coan will also need to have his best game of the season to make sure that Ohio State isn’t solely focused on the running game. He threw for just 108 yards and one touchdown in the first matchup. On the defensive side, the Buckeyes need to keep an eye on senior linebacker Chris Orr, who had six total tackles and one sack in the first matchup.

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, another Heisman hopeful, will be playing in the game despite some pain he is feeling in his strained knee. He aggravated it during a 56-27 thumping of Michigan last weekend. He’ll be wearing a brace on his left leg, which will no doubt limit his running capabilities. Fields threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns in the first game vs. Wisconsin and rushed for 28 yards. The Badgers defense has to prepare for the explosiveness of running back J.K. Dobbins, who has shined in the last two games against Penn State and Michigan and killed the Badgers for 163 yards on 20 carries. Just as big of an impact player on the defensive side of the ball is Chase Young, who tallied four sacks in the first matchup. He’s considered by most observers to be the best defensive player in the country this season.
