Five reasons Ohio State beats Rutgers Saturday

Five reasons Ohio State remains unbeaten against the Rutgers program on Saturday.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a “hey, that was much better” victory over the Akron Zips where they destroyed the MAC opponent, 59-7. Everyone keeps saying, “but it’s just Akron” and I am aware, but keeping any opponent to seven points in this day and age of college football is a major accomplishment.

Although they suffered a loss, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights had an impressive week as well, barely losing to the two-touchdown favorite Michigan Wolverines, 20-13. Rutgers stopped Michigan cold in the second half and had an admirable comeback that fell just a bit too short.

The Buckeyes have dominated this series since the Scarlet Knights joined the league back in 2014, winning all seven previous meetings. We see ample reason why that trend continues and provide you with five reasons why Ohio State will make it eight in a row.

WATCH: What Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said about Ohio State in previewing Saturday’s game

Greg Schiano talked about Ohio State earlier this week. Hear and watch what he said about the Buckeyes in previewing the matchup.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are clearly a program on the upswing under head coach Greg Schiano. During his second stint as the man running the show, the Scarlet Knights were instantly more competitive last season and look to be even more talented in 2021.

Heading into Week 4, Rutgers was an undefeated ballclub and gave Michigan all it could handle. In fact, the Scarlet Knights outplayed and physically beat up the Wolverines in the second half, nearly knocking off a team currently ranked No. 14 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Now, Ohio State comes travels to Piscataway to take measure up, and Schiano met with the local media in New Jersey to preview the matchup. Adding his background as OSU’s defensive coordinator only sweetens the pot and interest in this matchup.

In case you missed any of what Schiano said about Ohio State, you can listen and watch his entire press conference thanks to the Rutgers official YouTube Channel.

Ohio State game against Rutgers to be 3:30 p.m kick

The game time and broadcast information for the Ohio State vs. Rutgers football game was announced Monday by the Big Ten conference.

We now know the kick time for another one of Ohio State football’s games in 2021. The Big Ten announced Monday that the Big Ten Network would televise the game between Rutgers and OSU, and that the contest would be held at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

To date, Ohio State’s schedule has been all over the map. Its first contest of the year was a Thursday night game against Minnesota up in Minneapolis. That was followed by a Saturday Noon kick against Oregon, then a 3:30 p.m. slot vs. Tulsa this past Saturday. The Buckeyes game this weekend will be a 7:30 p.m. kick at home against Akron. Then, it’s back to 3:30 p.m. for the Rutgers game.

Rutgers is clearly on the upswing under head coach Greg Schiano. The Scarlet Knights have started the year 3-0 and have a huge tilt against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

Ohio State basketball beats No. 15 Rutgers. Three takeaways.

Ohio State went to No. 15 Rutgers and came away with a big win. Here are three takeaways we observed from what we saw on the court.

We’re still trying to figure out which Ohio State basketball team is going to show up on a nightly basis. The one that can do some damage and make a deep run in March showed up at the RAC to take down No. 15 Rutgers.

It was a dominating performance for the Buckeyes, and one that frankly, was a bit surprising coming off the lackluster effort against Minnesota on the road. Especially since the Scarlet Knights have been fantastic at home so far this year.

As we do after every game, we give you some observations from what we observed on the court. Here are three takeaways from Ohio State’s big win over Rutgers on Saturday.

NEXT … Physical is the name of the game

Ohio State basketball drops close one to Northwestern. Three Things we learned.

Ohio State lost a hard-fought battle that could have gone either way at Northwestern. Here are three things we learned after defeat.

The Ohio State basketball team is going to consider this one a game that it let get away.

It was another hard-fought Big ten battle for the Ohio State basketball team, and this time the Buckeyes couldn’t quite get it done, falling to Northwestern 71-70. It was a nip and tuck affair all along, but OSU controlled the lead for most of the game, until the very end when the Wildcats hit some huge shots to wrestle victory away from defeat.

Ohio State played a pretty solid game, and you have to give credit to Northwestern for sticking to it, playing through some adversity, and making the plays it had to down the stretch, but OSU had a shot to win it. With 12.0 seconds left, Duane Washington was trusted to dribble drive to the rim, had a layup, and simply missed the shot. E.J. Liddell got the rebound through physical contact, but couldn’t get a shot up. Northwestern corralled the loose ball and got fouled with two seconds left, effectively sealing the deal.

As we do with every OSU basketball game, here are three big things we took away from the close-shave loss against the Northwestern Wildcats Saturday.

NEXT … Have to be more mentally tough

Watch what Rutgers head basketball coach Steve Pikiell said about Ohio State after the game

Rutgers basketball coach Steve Pikiell met with the media following his team’s loss to Ohio State. Watch what he said about the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State basketball team used a big second-half to knock off No. 11 Rutgers after getting outplayed thoroughly in the first half. It was a physical game that the Buckeyes were able to take control of because of some foul issues in the paint for the Scarlet Knights.

OSU was able to get to the free-throw line and get high percentage baskets to reel things back in, grab the lead, and ultimately take control and win comfortably in the end.

Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell met with the media afterward to discuss his team and the challenge of what Ohio State offered. If you missed any of his comments, we have them for you thanks to the YouTube Channel of Rutgers Football.

Watch the below and listen to the Rutgers head man give a lot of credit to Ohio State, talk about the physicality of the game, the respect he has for Chris Holtmann, and more.

Ohio State basketball knocks off Rutgers. Three Things we learned.

The Ohio State basketball team used a dominating second half to knock off the unbeaten Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

It sure looked like Rutgers was going to run Ohio State out of Value City Arena in the first half Wednesday evening in an important Big Ten clash. To the Buckeyes’ credit, they stuck with things and were able to slowly turn the tide and take control of the game in the second half en route to an 80-68 win over No. 11 Rutgers.

The win moves Ohio State’s record to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. The loss was the first for No. 11 Rutgers, dropping their conference record to 2-1 after two impressive wins on the road against Maryland and at home vs. Illinois.

As always, there are some things to take away from the performance by OSU, and we’ve got three that stand out. Here are three things we learned from the Buckeyes’ big win against Rutgers.

NEXT … This team is at its best when it gets offense going to the rim

Ohio State basketball hands No. 11 Rutgers its first loss

Ohio State basketball took it on the chin in the first half but rallied in the second 20 minutes to knock off unbeaten Rutgers.

Just when you thought things were going south, the Ohio State basketball team got up off the mat and showed its resiliency by handing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights their first loss of the 2020-21 campaign 80-68.

It would be an understatement of the century to tell you that Rutgers was on the verge of running the Buckeyes out of the gym in the first half. The Scarlet Knights were playing with purpose, defending, and shooting the lights out. They took a sixteen point lead midway through the first 20 minutes and went into the locker room up 38-28.

It all changed in the second half though. Ohio State outscored Rutgers 52-30 in the second half thanks to some foul and injury trouble by the Scarlet Knights. The Buckeyes began to pound the ball inside, got the benefit of some calls, and Rutgers had no answer once the fouls and parade to the foul-line started.

Add that to guard Jakob Young going out of the game with injury midway through the second half, and the Rutgers team that finished the game wasn’t nearly the same one that started it on fire.

Still though, this was all about Ohio State imposing its will going to the rim. Ohio State got 22 points from the free-throw line and outrebounded Rutgers 45-25. Duane Washington led the Buckeyes with 22 points, and E.J. Liddell wasn’t far behind with 21 of his own, many of it coming in and around the lane. Kyle Young chipped in another 17 points.

It was Rutgers’ first loss of the season, and one that the Buckeyes should be able to use as a building block for the rest of the season.

As a side note, Ohio State forward Seth Towns recorded his first points in a Buckeye uniform and finished with four points. As he gets more healthy and his conditioning improves, he could end up being an x-factor the rest of the way.

With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 7-1. They are next in action Saturday at Northwestern.

Ohio State released the names of the champions for the game against Rutgers along with the Players of the Game, and we’re just passing it along. This week, after the 49-27 win against the Scarlet Knights, nineteen players graded out as champions.

Ryan Day postgame Rutgers press conference

As he always does, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with the media after the bizarre game against Rutgers. Watch, listen to his comments.

Ohio State won in a relatively easy fashion Saturday night against Rutgers. The way the second half played out though won’t leave anyone on the Scarlet and Gray sidelines feeling good about the way things ended.

Justin Fields was still Justin Fields, the defense showed some dominating play in the first half, and the offensive weapons were on full display. However, the Scarlet Knights unleashed an onslaught of trick plays in the last thirty minutes that created some confusion, lack of discipline, and kept OSU on its heels.

Buckeye head coach Ryan Day met with the media on a Zoom call after the game to discuss what he saw and we’ve got all the comments for you thanks to the YouTube channel of WBNS 10TV below.

Watch and listen as Day discusses the tale of two halves, Justin Fields’ high level of play, the need to stay focused and disciplined, and much more.

Next up for Ohio State is a trip to Maryland Saturday. Time to improve, learn, and move forward.
