Ohio State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The schedule hasn’t been a killer lately, but the team is playing well, the defense has been terrific, and the shots have been falling.

The problems come when the threes aren’t falling and the turnovers start flowing, but the Buckeyes have given it up just 22 times over the last three games and they’ve been demons on the offensive glass.

Purdue doesn’t force teams into too many mistakes and it’s just okay at guarding the three.

It might be this simple. Ohio State doesn’t lose when it hit 40% or more from three – 7-0 when it does that – but …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue has only allowed five teams to get to 40% or better from three, and it won four of those games.

And no, Ohio State isn’t getting 18 offensive rebounds like it did against Minnesota.

Third in the nation in field goal percentage, the Boilermakers have been lights out from the field and amazing from three over the last several games. They rolled into Iowa and didn’t let the Hawkeyes breathe, hitting 61% from the field and going off from three.

It’s not all just about making the outside shots, but Purdue has pumped in 40% or better from three in five of its last seven games. The open shots will be there.

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue won’t be nearly as hot as it was in Iowa City, and Ohio State is solid – for the most part – on the road, but shooting matters. Purdue is better at it.

The Buckeyes aren’t going to generate enough turnovers for easy points, but they’re great from the field, too. Purdue will pull away on a few three to go on a bit of a run in the second half, but it’ll take a while to get that separation.

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm on Ohio State after the game: ‘We were lucky to hold ’em to 59′

Among other glowing remarks he had for Ohio State, Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said the Boilermakers “were lucky to hold ’em to 59.”

The Ohio State football team came out and showed all the naysayers and critics that yes — when executing at the level it can — the points will come in bunches. The Buckeyes came out and put up over 600 yards of offense for the game and scored 42 points before even heading into the locker room at halftime.

OSU pulled the throttle back a little in the second half but finished the game with 59 points and surrendered 31 to Purdue to walk away with another victory on this 2021 journey it hopes ends in another Big Ten championship and run to the College Football Playoff.

Take that, national pundits.

Count Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm as a believer. He met with the media after the game to talk about what he saw and it turned into a six-minute informercial for Ohio State. He couldn’t stop talking about the talent level, how well the Buckeyes executed, and even said the Boilermakers were probably destined to give up more points.

“They (Ohio State) have tremendous talent,” Brohm said. “That offensive line is enormous, they do a tremendous job. The quarterback is athletic. He can throw it, he can move and make throws. The receivers across the board, I mean I don’t know if you can guard them. They have receivers on the outside — both sides — on the inside, they got really good running backs, and I think they’re well-coached. So, they know how to score points, they know how to move the ball. They get into the best play they can by looking at the defense and adjusting and doing those things.

“You know, in order to beat them you have to match up to them, you got to challenge them, you got to get up and guard them, and try to create some turnovers,” continued Brohm. “The other side of the ball they play well too, so like I said, I give them a ton of credit. They definitely came ready to play and executed at a high level and got it to their playmakers it seemed like whatever they wanted. We were lucky to hold them to 59.”

You can listen to the comments for yourself by clicking on the below thanks to the Journal & Courier’s YouTube Channel.

To be honest and fair to Brohm, it seemed like all of the questions that were lobbed to him were about how good Ohio State was, so he was just being honest, taking his medicine, and giving the Buckeyes their due credit after what we all witnessed on Saturday. Still, the six minutes of the interview was pretty much an advertisement for why you might want to come to the banks of the Olentangy to play some good ‘ole American football if you’re a strapping young lad that can play the game at a high level.

Ohio State will now prepare for another big one. The Buckeyes will host Michigan State this coming Saturday. They just keep getting bigger.

Five things we learned from Ohio State’s scoring barrage against Purdue

What are some things we took away from Ohio State’s scoring barrage vs. Purdue.

Well, that was more like it for the Ohio State football team. After a couple of weeks of sputtering on in the red zone on offense, the Buckeyes found their groove again and put up a ton of points against Purdue with a 59-31 statement win in the ‘Shoe.

Yeah, the defense probably gave up some more yards and points than what it wanted to, but at some point, human nature takes over and you’re just not as sharp on defense when things get out of hand. At the end of the day, OSU looked impressive and that will resonate with the media and College Football Playoff Committee as well.

Each game we reflect upon what we just witnessed with Ohio State football’s performance on the field and pull five things out of all the action. Here are five things we think we learned with OSU’s win over Purdue on Saturday.

WATCH: Garrett Wilson scores fourth touchdown against Purdue

Garrett Wilson is making up for lost time and has scored his fourth touchdown of the day. #GoBucks

It seems as if Garrett Wilson is making up for lost time after missing the game last week at Nebraska. The Ohio State offense is rolling and Wilson is a big reason why.

The Buckeyes got the opening kickoff of the third quarter after deferring to the second half. C.J. Stroud promptly marched the offense downfield where the Bucks were facing a fourth-and-one from the Purdue 24 yard line. Instead of kicking the field goal, Ryan Day sent the offense back on the field. One might expect a run play, but Stroud dropped back and found Wilson on a quick slant.

Wilson did the rest from there, juking a defender and stiff-arming his way into the endzone. Check out the great catch and run below.

There is no quit in this Purdue team as the Boilers answered with a score of their own.  Ohio State leads 52-24 midway through the third quarter.

Ohio State vs. Purdue three and out halftime review

Ohio State #Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers: three and out halftime review

The Ohio State Buckeyes are destroying the upset mined, Purdue Boilermakers, 45-17. The Buckeyes are already beating the spread, which was almost three touchdowns and it is only halftime. This game may be the most impressive performance from Ohio State since they smashed the Indiana Hoosiers a few weeks ago.

It appears that the Buckeyes were not falling for all of the trap game storyline non-sense that was floating around this week and understood that this Boilermakers squad has already beaten two top-five opponents this season. Ohio State appears to be composed and in a great position to end this game by the end of the third quarter. The following are the three things, which happen to be all positive, that we have noticed so far.

WATCH: Garrett Wilson makes a spectacular catch for the score against Purdue

Watch Garrett Wilson haul in his second touchdown of the game with an incredible catch. #GoBucks

Garrett Wilson may have missed the game last week at Nebraska, but the young man hasn’t missed a beat in his return this week against Purdue.

Wilson hauled in a touchdown on Ohio State’s first drive of the game and now he’s brought in his second score of the day with a spectacular catch. The Junior receiver contorted his body to put himself in position to make the catch, then not only got one foot down but showed NFL scouts why he should be a first-round pick by getting both feet in bounds.

Check out Wilson’s incredible catch via the BTN Twitter account.

The Ohio State offense is rolling. Up 35-7 early in the second quarter and looking for more.

WATCH: TreVeyon Henderson go 57 yards for the TD against Purdue

TreVeyon Henderson goes 57 yards untouched for the score. #GoBucks

Purdue gifted Ohio State with a turnover after a miscommunication caused a fumble with Jerron Cage falling on the rock. When that happens, the offense has to capitalize. And that’s just what they did.

TreVeyon Henderson took the handoff from C.J. Stroud on the very next play and went untouched for 57-yards to the endzone. Henderson displayed his incredible speed pulling away from everyone. It was the freshman phenom’s second touchdown of the day.

Watch Henderson take it to the house courtesy of 247 Sports Twitter account.

That makes 17 touchdowns for Henderson on the season. He now is just one score away from tying Maurice Clarett’s record for touchdowns by a true freshman.

WATCH: Garrett Wilson takes it to the house for first score against Purdue

Watch Garrett Wilson get loose to open the game for Ohio State. #GoBucks

Welcome back Garrett Wilson! After missing last week’s game at Nebraska, Wilson is off to a fast start against Purdue.

The Ohio State defense held the Boilermakers to a three and out on their opening drive and gave OSU great field position with a shanked punt. The Buckeyes moved the ball down the field efficiently before C.J. Stroud found Wilson on an out route. The Purdue defenders lost Wilson as he sped down the sideline before diving into the endzone.

Check out the opening score to put Ohio State up early in the game.

I’m sure Stroud is ecstatic to have one of his favorite targets back this week against Purdue.

Ohio State vs. Purdue Buckeyes Wire staff predictions

Ohio State #Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers: Buckeyes Wire staff predictions

The Ohio State Buckeyes are continuing their run for the College Football Playoff this Saturday in a match-up against the Purdue Boilermakers in Columbus at 3:30 p.m. EST. The Buckeyes are coming off of an extremely close victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 26-17, and will be looking to provide some style points for the CFP Committee.

Purdue has had a weird and inconsistent season so far, but it currently sits at 6-3 and is coming off a blow-out upset over the then No. 3 Michigan State Spartans, 40-29. A common term being thrown around is a trap game, but does that still apply if the team trapping you has already beaten two top-five opponents?

The staff at Buckeyes Wire has some interesting takes this week and hopefully we have a more accurate take considering all three of us predicted large Ohio State wins last week.

Three reasons Purdue could give Ohio State issues on Saturday

Here are three reasons Purdue could give Ohio State fits on Saturday. #GoBucks

We are just a couple of days away from another game on Ohio State football’s journey to make it to yet another Big Ten Championship game and potential College Football Playoff, but a team that has already slain a couple of top-five opponents stands in the way. The Purdue Boilermakers have already taken down Iowa and Michigan State, respectively ranked No. 2 and No. 3 at the time, and they now set their eyes on toppling another one.

The Buckeyes host Purdue at home in the ‘Shoe and the Boilermakers aren’t often called the Spoilermakers without reason. Even aside from this season, Purdue has a history of spring upsets and has even been a thorn in the side of OSU during the last ten meetings, winning four of those including the 40-29 2018 debacle that still triggers Ohio State fans.

If anything, the team Jeff Brohm has this year might have more pieces to shock the world yet again than it has in recent memory, including that 2018 team. So, OSU had better be a more focused, engaged, and intentional bunch on Saturday afternoon.

Here are three reasons Purdue could cause some fits for Ohio State this weekend,
