Ohio State vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

Really, just how banged up is Ohio State?

Star WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba might play on his injured hamstring, but that’s hardly for certain. The same goes for the running back tandem of Miyan Williams and TreVeon Henderson, but they’re supposedly okay with two weeks off after getting banged up.

Even if they can all go they’re not going to be 100%.

As amazing as the Ohio State offense is – with or without all the skill parts – the Iowa defense knows how to grind games down.

It kept Michigan to 327 yards and didn’t buckle until late. It hasn’t given up a rushing touchdown to anyone but the Wolverines, it allowed just three touchdown passes so far, forced three takeaways in three separate games, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Ohio State Will Win

Score once and this might be over.

It might be a punchline at this point, but the Iowa offense really is just that bad.

Forget about points, just getting first downs is like pulling teeth.

The worst offense in college football averages just 239 yards per game, it can’t come up with those pesky first downs – it’s last in the nation at doing that – the running game doesn’t exist, there’s no downfield passing game, and almost nothing happens unless the defense generates takeaways.

Yeah, the Iowa defense might keep the Buckeye offense from going off – Notre Dame was able to do it in the opener – but again, it’s not going to take a ton to put this away.

And …

What’s Going To Happen

Five of the top seven teams in the country in total defense are in the Big Ten. Four of them have yet to play Ohio State, and Ohio State is the fifth.

The amazing Buckeye offense gets the headlines, but the key to 2022 is the improved defense that appears to have made all the problems of 2021 disappear.

The rested Buckeye offense will score on the first two drives, but Iowa’s defense will clamp down and keep this from getting too far out of hand. It won’t matter.

As for Ohio State, they are looking to snap a two-game losing skid and look to turn things around but will also have a tough task against Luka Garza and Iowa

Ohio State (14-4) vs Iowa (13-4) Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

This team has found an attitude on the road lately.

It struggled earlier in the season, but in the last month it rolled against Rutgers, pushed past Illinois, and game up with a fantastic performance against Wisconsin as part of a run six wins in the last seven games.

What’s going right? There’s been more of an emphasis on getting to the basket, there isn’t much of a reliance on the three – at least over the last few games – and the defense has been fantastic at stopping teams from the outside.

Iowa doesn’t do that defense thing – especially from three – and Ohio State is more than happy to get into a shootout, but …

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa is going to keep on shooting.

The threes are coming, no one is better at moving the ball around and creating assists, and especially lately, few teams are stronger at coming up with offensive rebounds.

The Hawkeyes are great at cleaning up messes and Ohio State is just okay at hitting the glass. Even worse for the Buckeyes, they don’t force mistakes and should get roasted by the great passing Hawkeyes for a whole lot of easy baskets.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State will clamp down enough on defense, and will do enough on the free-throw line – to slip by.

The Buckeyes have to limit the turnovers on the road – that’s been a bit of a problem – and the have to get out to a hot start and keep on pressing the scoring gas pedal.

Expect a whole lot of wild swings in a fun battle.

Ohio State (17-8) vs. Iowa (18-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Ohio State Will Win

On a nice run, the Buckeyes have won five of their last six games with a defense that’s ramped things up a bit.

Meanwhile, if you believe in patterns, Iowa has alternated win-loss-win-loss over the last seven games, and now, after winning at Minnesota, it’s due for a loss again.

More importantly, the Hawkeyes aren’t doing much defensively lately on a consistent basis, they’re not forcing mistakes, and they’re having problems stopping the three. Ohio State can score from anywhere, but it’s the best team in the Big Ten from three. Take that to go along with the Big Ten’s best defense, an it’s a nice mix to pull this off on the road.

Why Iowa Will Win

Few teams are better at moving the ball around than Iowa.

It’s offense is the best in the Big Ten averaging over 78 points per game, and it comes from getting that every pass for the easy shot in shootout after shootout.

It’s an explosive O – it roared past Minnesota after getting down early – and it should be able to overcome a Buckeye D that’s fantastic, but doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa’s passing will be just enough to overcome the Buckeye D.

Ohio State might be able to keep the score from getting out of hand, and it’ll be in it late, but Iowa has won six straight at home and will come up with the scoring pop when needed to survive a fun battle.
