Ohio State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

Will there be a massive wind storm like Ohio State had to deal with in the 21-7 win over Northwestern last week in Evanston? No, but there’s supposed to be a decent breeze.

The Hoosiers will take anything they can get.

Ohio State goes in spurts. It took a while to put away Penn State, there were a few too many stalls throughout the last few weeks, and even with the bad weather it took too much work to get by a miserable Northwestern.

Even though the only thing anyone could do was run – and everyone knew what was coming – the Ohio State defense still gave up over 200 yards to the Wildcat ground game.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Ohio State Will Win

Indiana isn’t running for 200 yards. It probably isn’t even getting to 70.

The offense can’t get anything moving – it hasn’t come close to 100 yards since the Week 3 win over WKU – and the passing attack isn’t steady enough to make up for it.

Indiana can throw. It was able to push Maryland with a good day, and throwing for 200 yards is likely, but there’s not enough steady firepower.

Ohio State doesn’t have to worry about any sort of steady pressure from the Hoosier defensive front, and it doesn’t have to worry about its defense getting gassed.

Indiana is dead last in the nation in time of possession.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State will open it up a bit, just because.

The Northeastern game was frustrating because of the weather, and now it’s time to let the offense go off.

Next week is a trip to Maryland and then it’s on against Michigan. This is the fun home game, and the team will play like it with a big start to all but end this in the first quarter.

Ohio State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Indiana offense isn’t there.

It was fun against Idaho, and it worked okay against WKU, but in Big Ten play it scored a grand total of 21 points in three games. Granted, the Hoosiers faced Iowa, Penn State, and Michigan State, but it’s not like Ohio State is a week off – even with its mediocre D.

On the flip side, the Ohio State O is the most productive in college football. It was five yards away from 500 in the opener against Minnesota and cranked up well over five bills against everyone since.

QB CJ Stroud has settled in. He’s playing at a Heisman-level stat-wise, TreVeyon Henderson might be the best running back in college football, and Indiana doesn’t have any prayer of keeping up any sort of pace if the Buckeye machine gets going early.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Indiana Will Win

The Ohio State defense is a whole lot better now that it’s not dealing with Oregon, but it’s still a bit suspect.

Granted, most teams are throwing to try keeping up the pace – and not doing a good job of it – but Akron is the only team that couldn’t get to 200 yards through the air.

IU can’t make this any sort of a shootout, and time of possession won’t matter that much since the Buckeyes can go on a one-play scoring drive at almost any time, but controlling the clock as much as possible matters.

The Hoosiers are good in the time of possession battle, overall the defense has done its part to keep games alive. No one has gouged them yet, with Cincinnati being held to just 328 yards and getting key points from the special teams. And …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana is incredibly plucky.

It hasn’t been able get the season going thanks to a slate with four top ten-caliber teams in the first six outings.

It couldn’t do anything offensively against Penn State, but even in the 24-0 loss the game never got out of hand. The Iowa loss was over fast thanks to turnovers and a big early offensive hit, but the Michigan State game was a close fight and Cincinnati was there for the taking.

Yeah … this one won’t be that close.

The rested Buckeye offense will need a little while to stretch its legs, and then the big play drives will come. The IU offense won’t be able to keep up the fight after the midway point of the third. Then it’ll open up.

Why Indiana Will Win

The lines have been solid so far, with the offensive side giving Michael Penix Jr. time to work.

The left-handed sophomore struggled for the first 58 minutes of the season, led IU to the win over Penn State, and he hasn’t slowed down ever since, throwing for 320 yards or more in each of the last two games. Even though he threw two picks against Michigan State, there weren’t any problems in the shutout win thanks to the defensive front that stuffed everything.

The Hoosiers allowed a grand total of 73 rushing yards against Michigan and Michigan State, they lead the Big Ten in sacks, and they’re second in tackles for loss. They’re going to get to Justin Fields and apply enough pressure to be a problem.

Why Ohio State Will Win

How do you know you have a great team? You don’t play that great – at least by your own high standards – and you still roll to three straight double-digit wins.

No, there’s no JK Dobbins around anymore, but the Buckeye have rushed for over 200 yards in each of the first three games.

No, this isn’t the same receiving corps as the 2019 version, but Fields hasn’t had any issues hitting 87% of his passes for 908 yards and 11 touchdowns without an interception.

No, the defensive front isn’t quite the same sort of a killer without Chase Young, but it still leads the Big Ten in sacks and there haven’t been too many things to get into a twist over defensively.

For all of the good things Indiana is doing, there’s no real running game. It has yet to push past 118 yards in any of the four games, it’s averaging just 2.7 yards per carry, and that means …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Michael Penix or Bust against the Buckeyes, and that’s a problem.

Fields will be better than Penix.

It’s not that Penix isn’t amazing, and it’s not that he won’t have a good game, and it’s not that IU doesn’t have the ability to make this slightly interesting, but this is a one-dimensional offensive team against an Ohio State team that either needs to be pounded on, or has to deal with a versatile O full of playmakers.

Look at this as a copy of Ohio State’s game against Penn State. It’ll be great, there won’t be any real concerns after a few early scores, but the final score will look cosmetically better than the game itself with Indiana putting up a few late points to hang around.

The No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes cruised through their non-conference schedule, but Big Ten conference play has been another story. The team has just a 1-3 record but will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday against host Indiana, who is looking for its third conference win.

Ohio State (11-4, 1-3) is in quite a rut. Once ranked as high as No. 2 in the country, the team comes in having lost to West Virginia, Wisconsin and Maryland. However, two of the three were ranked. In Tuesday’s game against No. 12 Maryland, the Buckeyes lost 67-55. Three players scored in double digits, with Kaleb Wesson leading the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Andre Wesson and DJ Carton also had 14 points.

It’s been an up and down few weeks for Indiana (12-3, 2-2). Following three straight wins before Christmas, the Hoosiers lost 71-64 to Arkansas at home and then 75-59 on the road to Maryland. On Wednesday against Northwestern, who is just 5-9 on the season, the Hoosiers just squeaked by, winning 66-62. Indiana outscored Northwestern by seven points in the second half and had as big as a 10-point lead in the first half. The Hoosiers squandered that lead by committing 11 turnovers and went into halftime trailing by three. The Hoosiers were led by Trayce Jackson-Davis, who scored 21 points. Justin Smith also had 18 points, while Aljami Durham had 16 points.
