Ohio State’s Neal Shipley finishes U.S. Open as low amateur

Shipley joins some of the biggest names in the history of professional golf. #GoBucks

It has been one whale of a season beyond the college game for Ohio State men’s golfer, Neal Shipley. After finishing as the low amateur at the Master’s earlier this year, he doubled down and accomplished the same feat this weekend at the U.S. Open.

Shipley was one of three amateurs to make the cut at Pinehurst No. 2, and finished the championship at +6, two shots ahead of Florida State’s Luke Clanton who started the day tied with Shipley.

The graduate student becomes just the tenth amateur golfer to win low amateur at both the Master’s and U.S. Open in the same year, joining another former Buckeye, Jack Nicklaus. You may have heard of him.

Shipley has clearly shown that he belongs with the big boys of the sport. Hopefully, the type of finishes we’ve seen from him at these PGA majors translate into a long and distinguished professional golf career.

Ohio State men’s golf falls in NCAA semifinals

In case you missed it, so close. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s golf team almost messed around and got itself into the national championship match play. In the end though, it lost in heartbreaking fashion to Auburn in an epic playoff.

The Buckeyes did enough to advance to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship by finishing in the top eight of the team stroke play, then upset Vanderbilt in the close quarterfinals contest to punch its ticket to the semifinals.

Things were nip and tuck all the way against the Tigers, with the hopes of a victory eventually falling on Adam Wallin in a playoff that took 21 holes to complete. Auburn’s Jackson Koivun finally clinched the win, giving the Tigers the 3-2 win.

Despite the loss, it was the Buckeyes best finish at the NCAA Championship since 1997 when it finished fourth in the team stroke play. Maybe the run in Carlsbad, CA will create some momentum towards next season.

Adam Wallin falls to an eighth place tie at NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

Not what Wallin was aiming for heading into the day, but still a fantastic result! #GoBucks

Ohio State men’s golfer, Adam Wallin, entered the final round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship with a two-stroke lead with designs of winning the first national title for an OSU golfer since Clack Burroughs took the trophy home in 1985.

In the end, there was a little rough patch in the middle of his round that cost him a chance at a title. Wallin posted a 4-over par for his round, dropping him into a tie for eighth place at 1-under par, just two strokes back of individual winner, Hiroshi Tai, from Georgia Tech.

It’s still one whale of a showing for the Buckeye golfer, and the first time an Ohio State player finished inside the top ten since 1995.

Wallin isn’t done either. He will now turn his attention towards helping his team get through match play against Vanderbilt on Tuesday as one of five golfers that will need to win three of five contests in match play.

Ohio State men’s golf advances to match play for NCAA Championship

Moving on to match play and a chance to win a national title! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s golf team didn’t exactly have its best day, but did enough to remain inside the top eight teams and will advance to the match play portion to determine the team national championship.

The Buckeyes entered the day in fifth place, but shot an 9-over par to slide two spots down to No. 7, but still four shots clear of the ninth place team, Oklahoma. OSU will be joined by first place finisher, Illinois, Vanderbilt (2), Virginia (T3), North Carolina (T3), Florida State (5), Auburn, and Georgia Tech (8).

Match play will begin on Tuesday and run through Wednesday when a national champion will be crowned. The Buckeyes will match up with Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals with five golfers going head-to-head in a best of five format for 18-holes.

Ohio State has won just two team national titles in its history, 1945 and 1979.

We’ll have more on the matchups and how it’ll all play out when it all falls into place, but congrats to the Buckeyes for advancing this far.

Ohio State men’s golf in fifth place after third round of NCAA Championship

Looking to advance to match play and in great shape to do so. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s golf team posted another solid round at the NCAA Championship Saturday, shooting a 1-over 289 to move into fifth place with just one round to go at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

All the Buckeyes have to do when they tee off on Monday is to remain in the top eight teams in order to advance to the match play format that will determine the team championship. OSU is sitting in pretty good shape with an eight stroke advantage over both Arizona and Georgia Tech.

Ohio State was paced by Jackson Chandler who shot a 2-under par 70 in a week in which all five players have had their moments in playing great team golf.

OSU is eleven shots behind leader Illinois (-2), and just three strokes behind fourth place Florida State. It’ll look to solidify its spot in the final eight when it tees off with Florida State and North Carolina for Monday’s final round at 2:25 p.m. ET. Golf Channel will have coverage of the final round from 6-10 p.m. ET.

Ohio State golfer Adam Wallin holds lead at NCAA Championship

One more round to go! #GoBucks

Through three rounds of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, Ohio State golfer, Adam Wallin, holds the top spot after firing a 3-under par 69 Sunday.

Wallin notched five birdies and just three bogeys during his round to grab the lead at 5-under par for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Virginia’s Ben James and Stanford’s Karl Vilips.

“I had a really solid day,” said Wallin. “I don’t know exactly how many greens I hit, I think like 16 or something, which was really solid. I never made any mistakes, just strung together a good round of golf.”

As a team, the Buckeyes are in fifth place. The top eight teams following Monday’s final round move on to a match play format to determine a team champion. The Buckeyes are in pretty good shape, eight shots ahead of Arizona and Georgia Tech in ninth place.

It’s been quite some time since an OSU golfer has taken the NCAA crown. Clark Burroughs did it in 1985, and he is one of five OSU individual champions, including Jack Nicklaus in 1961.

Wallin, along with his Ohio State teammates, will be paired with Florida State and North Carolina for Monday’s final round and will start off the first tee at 2:25 p.m. ET. Golf Channel will have coverage of the final round from 6-10 p.m. ET.

Ohio State golfer Maxwell Moldovan qualifies for Barbasol Championship

In case you missed it, Maxwell Moldovan will be representing Ohio State in a PGA Tour event this weekend. #GoBucks

Ohio State men’s golfer, Maxwell Moldovan shot a -7 under to finish in second place at the PGA Tour’s Monday qualifier earlier this week to qualify for this weekend’s Barbasol Championship. With the result, he is one of just four in a field of 65 golfers to make the cut at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club.

It’ll be Moldovan’s first official PGA Tour event when he tees off at Champions Course at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholsville, Kentucky, though he did qualify for both of the last two U.S. Opens. He will be joining two other Buckeyes — Ryan Amour and Bo Hoag — this week in the field.

Moldovan continues to build upon a stellar career. He set a single-season Ohio State scoring record for the third consecutive year and finished in the top 20 in 11-of-13 events this season. He had a whopping seven top-five finishes.

Join us in wishing Moldovan a great showing on tour this weekend in Kentucky.

Ohio State men’s golf tied for 12th after one round at NCAA Championships

In position to advance, just need to get to work. #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s golf team didn’t play itself to the top of the leaderboard at the NCAA Championships on Friday, but it didn’t play itself out of contention either.

The Buckeyes shot a 7-over par round of 287 as a team on Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, which is seven strokes off the lead of an even par 280 Georgia Tech posted. The top fifteen schools will make the first cut after Sunday’s third round, followed by the top eight teams that will head to match play after the round on Monday.

Individually, the best score of any Buckeye was posted by junior Maxwell Moldovan, who shot a 1-under par round of 69 that included 17 pars and one birdie. He is tied for 14th heading into the second round.

Ohio State will be paired with Colorado State and Georgia for the second-straight day for the second round. The teams will tee off at 12:25 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Ohio State men’s golf advances to NCAA Championship

In case you missed it, the Ohio State men’s hockey team is headed to Arizona to compete for a national championship. #GoBucks

By way of finishing in fourth place at the Auburn Regional last week, the Ohio State men’s golf team will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Phoenix, Arizona, this coming weekend.

It was a week in which the Buckeyes were in contention as one of five qualifying spots out of the regional to qualify, and used an effort that resulted in just one of two teams that shot under par on Wednesday to make their way through.

It’ll be the 48th national NCAA Championship appearance and the first in two consecutive years since 1997 and 1998 for the program.

“Today is always a special day and it brings forth an exceptionally high volume of emotions,” head coach Jay Moseley said in a statement. “This week is what every team and athlete prepares for all season. Our guys came out with courageous energy today and their performance on the final nine holes was truly spectacular. I could not be more excited for our team. We know our team is equipped with the skills to play Greyhawk and this week confirmed that we can play with anyone in the country when we play at, or near, our best.”

Maxwell Moldovan led the way as the medalist of the event, shooting -7 for the tournament to pace the Buckeyes, who will be one of 30 teams at the event that begins Friday, May 26.

Two Ohio State men’s golfers set to compete in U.S. Amateur this week

Ohio State men’s golfers Maxwell Moldovan and Elis Svard will be competing in the U.S. Amateur out in Bandon, Oregon this week.

Two Ohio State men’s golfers are preparing to compete this week on the Dunes and Trail courses. Incoming freshman Maxwell Moldovan and graduate transfer Elis Svard were both selected by way of exemption status rather than qualifying due to COVID-19 concerns.

Moldovan has had quite the summer. Not only was he selected as the 2019 AJGA Player of the Year, but he’s played and showed well in just about every top amateur event. He rose to as high as No. 33 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and led the US side to a victory in Junior President’s Cup in Australia this past December. Last summer, Moldovan advanced to the Round of 32 in the U.S. Amateur and the Round of 16 in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

For Svard he’s still getting acclimated to life as a Buckeye after an outstanding collegiate career at Cal State Monterey Bay before transferring to Ohio State. A three-time All-American, he won four times and posted 20 top-5 finishes. This past year, he was a finalist for the DII Jack Nicklaus Award after finishing in the top-10 in all six of his collegiate tournaments. The Sweden native recently won the Stockholm Amateur where he fired rounds of 68-66-66.

Stroke play begins on Monday and Tuesday with two rounds. The top 64 golfers will then advance to match play beginning on Wednesday. The winner will be crowned after a 36-hole match on Sunday with the GOLF Channel and NBC Universal’s Peacock alternating live streaming coverage beginning on Wednesday.
