WATCH: Former Ohio State baseball player gets first Major League hit

What a moment! #GoBucks

In case you missed the news earlier this week, former Ohio State catcher, Dillon Dingler was promoted to the Major League’s with the Detroit Tigers and appeared in Monday’s game vs. the Cleveland Guardians in Commerica Park.

It was a memorable start to his career because Dingler not only got his first MLB hit, but he drove in a run as an extra base hit while doing it. It all happened in the 7th inning with the Tigers trailing the Guardians 8-0. Dingler took a 1-1 pitch and drove it into the right field corner for a run-scoring double against Guardians starter Tanner Bibee.

In case you didn’t get to see this memorable liftime moment for Dingler, you can check it out thanks to the Detroit Tigers’ “X” account.

Good on Dingler. We’ll continue to keep an eye on what this former Buckeye is doing in the majors and hope he’s in for a long, major league career.

Report: Former Ohio State baseball star expected to make Major League debut

A dream come true! #GoBucks

When the Detroit Tigers selected Ohio State baseball’s star catcher [autotag]Dillon Dingler[/autotag] in the second round of the draft, it seemed  like only a matter of time until he made his Major League Baseball debut.

On Sunday, a trade that the Tigers made involving its starting catcher Carson Kelly has opened up a big league starting spot. It was reported by MLB Network’s Jon Morosi that Dingler will indeed be called up on Monday to make his debut.

On the season in AAA, the catcher has hit .308 with 17 home runs and 52 RBI. Dingler has also scored 44 runs while chipping in 5 steals, showing he has a well-rounded game.

This will clearly be a huge moment for Dingler, and we will all be rooting for him as he looks like his Major League service clock will begin.

Ohio State baseball adds SEC transfer infielder, former top-100 prospect Luther Ellis

A Buckeyes baseball BOOM!

Ohio State baseball may have landed its biggest transfer on Friday afternoon.

Infielder, [autotag]Luther “Lee” Ellis[/autotag], committed to the Buckeyes after playing his freshman season at South Carolina. He played in 17 games this past year, starting six of them batting .273 with 8 runs and a steal.

Ellis was a highly ranked recruit coming out of high school, as Perfect Game named him as the No. 1 prospect in Maryland and the 85th overall player in the country as noted in his player page.

A cannon for an arm, Ellis was clocked at 96 miles-per-hour at a Perfect Game event, while his 6.41 60-yard dash is equally impressive.

There is no doubt that assistant Joey Holcomb had a part in this move by Ellis, as he had the same responsibilities with the Gamecocks. He should compete for a starting spot immediately.

Ohio State baseball sees one player taken in the MLB draft

Congrats Gavin! #GoBucks

It wasn’t the best showing for Ohio State baseball during the [autotag]2024 MLB draft[/autotag], but luckily the Buckeyes didn’t get shutout.

In the 17th round with pick No. 500, the [autotag]Washington Nationals[/autotag] selected left-handed pitcher, [autotag]Gavin Bruni[/autotag]. The starter has been solid over the past two seasons, while consistently taking the bump when his name was called.

The results weren’t spectacular, as his ERA was 4.87 in 2023 and 6.19 this past year. Bruni did a great job striking batters out, as he averaged over a strike-out per nine innings over those two seasons.

While it’s great for Bruni to get drafted, this is a direct reflection on the need to infuse the program with more talent and develop that talent to elevate things.

Congrats Gavin, we look forward to your continued success in the professional ranks.

Ohio State adds infielder from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College

The Buckeyes add another key piece on the diamond #GoBucks

The Ohio State baseball team added another player to its roster today. Marc Stephens announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he would be joining the Buckeyes.

Stephens hails from Orange Beach, Alabama, and spent the last two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. While at MGCCC Stephens hit .387 with six homers, 71 RBI, and 16 stolen bases in 94 career games with the Bulldogs. Stephens helped lead Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 26-22 record this past season.

In his second collegiate season, Stephens improved his average from .340 to .435, a massive jump from an already impressive freshman campaign. It’s doubtful he’ll be able to replicate that kind of increase going to the Big Ten, but it’s clear the talent is there. It seem’s the Buckeyes are getting a good one.

Ohio State baseball adds pitcher from transfer portal

A homecoming for the New Albany native #GoBucks

The Ohio State baseball team has added a pitcher via the transfer portal this week. Spencer Hill announced his commitment to the Buckeyes via social media.

Hill is a central Ohio native growing up in the northwest suburb of New Albany. A 2020 graduate, Hill spent a post-graduate season at Bridgeton Academy where he posted a 2-0 record with 13 strikeouts in a COVID-19-shortened season. From there Hill headed to Northern Illinois for a year before landing at UNC-Asheville.

While in Ashville, the 6-4 right-hander made 28 appearances for the Bulldogs. He posted a 10.18 ERA while striking out 21 batters in 20 innings of work.

Hill will most likely continue his work as a specialist out of the bullpen for newly hired head coach Justin Haire. Coach Haire would be familiar with Hill from his time at Campbell University where his teams squared off against UNC Ashville several times.

Ohio State baseball has found its new head coach

Welcome to Buckeye Nation Justin! #GoBucks

Although it seemed like a great idea to hire [autotag]Bill Mosiello[/autotag] away from a national power in TCU, it turned out to be the completely wrong move for the Ohio State baseball program.

Distance from his family along with so-so results pushed him to resign and return back to a familiar place with the Horned Frogs after just two above-average seasons with the Buckeyes. The program went just 60-51 overall.

The search for the Buckeyes new leader didn’t take long, as on Friday it was announced that Ohio native, [autotag]Justin Haire[/autotag], would be taking over the position. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he played collegiately for Bowling Green and Indianapolis before starting his coaching career with Sterling.

Haire moved quickly up the ranks, earning his first head coaching opportunity just four years later in 20215 with Campbell. It was a huge success, and he was named the Big South Coach of the Year four times, the last three seasons in-a-row.

With the exception of the COVID-19 season, Haire led his team to the NCAA Tournament every season since 2018. During his tenure with Camels, he won 317 games to 212 losses. If he is able to replicate those results in Columbus, this will be a great hire from new athletic director Ross Bjork.

Ohio State baseball head coach Bill Mosiello resigns, to return to former home

The Bucks will have a new leader for their baseball program next spring

It was a trying season for Ohio State baseball, even though it made the Big Ten Tournament.

The Buckeyes completed their season with a 29-26 record, 12-12 in conference play. Head coach [autotag]Bill Mosiello[/autotag] who was hired just two years ago, guided Ohio State to a 60-51 record, each campaign just a few games over .500.

Mosiello came from Texas Christian, and helped the Horned Frogs to four College World Series berths as an assistant. Clearly, that success didn’t follow him to Columbus, and on Friday he resigned from his position and will return to TCU once again. It was reported by Kendall Rodgers of D1 Baseball that the move was being made.

It looks like family played a big part in his decision, as they never fully made the move to Columbus. We wish him the best as he returns to TCU and hopefully new Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork finds a great replacement for him.

Ohio State baseball falls to Nebraska, season comes to an end

That’s a wrap for the Buckeyes in ‘24. #GoBucks

Although Ohio State baseball managed to knock off Nebraska during the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, it wasn’t able to replicate that magic on Friday afternoon.

The Buckeyes once again allowed double-digit runs, as they fell to the Cornhuskers by a final score of 12-5. Nebraska jumped out a a 4-0 lead after the second inning, and although Ohio State got within two runs, 5-3, after the top of the fifth, the higher seed just continued to pile on the runs.

Ohio State’s season comes to an end, finishing with a 29-26 record, and will watch the postseason from home.

With the transfer portal and the MLB Draft upcoming, it remains to be seen who will return for the Buckeyes next year.
