Safelite Autoglass buys naming rights to playing field at Ohio Stadium

How you feeling about this Buckeye fans?

They say the only thing constant in the world is change and like it or not, a significant change has just been announced in Columbus. Safelite Autoglass, a company based in the capital city has purchased the naming rights to the playing surface in Ohio Stadium, which will now be known as Safelite Field.

Two white Safelite graphics will be placed opposite the Big Ten graphics on the field. One can only assume Ohio State was paid a hefty sum to hand those rights over. Now fans can expect to be greeted by stadium announcers, as well as TV and radio voices to “Safelite Field at Ohio Stadium.”

Is it true that all publicity is good publicity? I can’t imagine that this change is going to go over well with the vast majority of the Buckeye faithful. Will more people have Safelite fix their cracked windshield now that their name is on the playing surface? Does anyone else even fix broken windshields?

In a world where money seems to rule all, nothing is sacred anymore. Seems like this would have been a prime opportunity to name the field after an iconic former coach. I don’t know… maybe Woody Hayes Field?

Maybe more money gives OSU a better chance to win more championships, but something just doesn’t feel right about this.

WATCH: Ohio Stadium stadium turf time lapse transformation

How do you like the new look now that it is completed? Here’s a time lapse video of the process of replacing the field turf inside Ohio Stadium. #GoBucks

When you turn on your high-definition streaming device this fall, we’re here to remind you that there will be a new look to the Ohio Stadium field turf. The program announced the replacement of the turf and even got some input from the fans, and the installation of the new green stuff has been completed.

There wasn’t a ton of fanfare over the replacement and new look, but the Ohio State Football Twitter account did share a time-lapse video of the old turf being transformed into the new, crisp look.

In case you missed it, we’re sharing it here with you. Watch as the old turf is ripped up, the ground prepared, and the new turf installed little by little until the finished product is complete.

This is great, but we can’t wait to see how this looks on our television sets and streaming devices under the bright lights against Notre Dame on September 3.

Notre Dame Stadium left off most intimidating list for 2022

Besides Clemson, which Notre Dame home game are you most excited for this fall?

When it comes to a college football venue what exactly does intimidating mean?

Loud, intoxicated fans that come in a crowd of more than 75,000 who are all ready to make life a living hell for the visiting opponent on a given week?

That’s a good place to start when discussing a list of the most intimidating places to play in college football.  Brad Crawford of 247Sports however took it even a step further and decided which home venues would be rocking the most this coming fall with key components being how good of a home slate a team has, and what that team’s preseason hype is at this point in time.

Spoiler alert:  Notre Dame Stadium didn’t make Crawford’s list of the top nine for 2022.

How can that possibly be you ask?  After all, Notre Dame has just one loss on their home field since week three of the 2017 season.  The Irish have to do the majority of their heavy lifting away from Notre Dame Stadium this fall.  The opener at Ohio State starts the year with a bang while a contest against BYU on a neutral field in Las Vegas is another compelling showdown.  The Irish conclude the year with another huge game at USC as [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] will square off for the first time.

But as for games at Notre Dame Stadium this year?  The early November game against Clemson could very possibly have College Football Playoff implications on the line, but the rest of the home slate hardly moves the needle.

September 10 vs. Marshall
September 17 vs. California
October 15 vs. Stanford
October 22 vs. UNLV
November 5 vs. Clemson
November 19 vs. Boston College

NEXT:  See Crawford’s top nine!

Ohio Stadium is among the most intimidating venues in college football

Where do you put Ohio Stadium among the most intimidating venues? #GoBucks

When it comes to college football venues, there are some that are more terrorizing than others. There is a multitude of reasons for the intimidation factor such as the student section, stadium size, and overall atmosphere.

As the start of the 2022 college football season draws near, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford put together his list of the nine most intimidating stadiums across the nation. Sure enough, Ohio Stadium was on the list.

What 247Sports says…

This is not always the loudest stadium in the country, but it’s going to be especially lively this season when you consider the sheer number of quality opponents who are coming to Ohio Stadium. One of the preseason favorites to win the national title in 2022, the Buckeyes host Notre Dame in the season opener, the first of five consecutive home games for the nation’s No. 2 team (according to most way-too-early poll projections). Ohio State takes on Wisconsin in Week 4, hosts Iowa on Oct. 22 and entertains Michigan with payback on its mind to close it out in November. That’s four contests against top 25 competition this fall for the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium.

The top 9:

  1. Memorial Stadium (Clemson Tigers)
  2. Ohio Stadium (Ohio State Buckeyes)
  3. Neyland Stadium (Tennessee Vols)
  4. Sanford Stadium (Georgia Bulldogs)
  5. Tiger Stadium (LSU Tigers)
  6. Autzen Stadium (Oregon Ducks)
  7. Kyle Field (Texas A&M Aggies)
  8. Beaver Stadium (Penn State Nittany Lions)
  9. D.W.R. Razorbacks Stadium (Arkansas Razorbacks)

Own a piece of the old field turf from the ‘Shoe

Get yourself a piece of Ohio Stadium field turf! #GoBucks

For those of you wondering if, or when, Ohio State might put some of the old field turf up for sale, wonder no more.

According to an announcement on Friday, the fine folks at OSU plan on selling parts of the turf that is being replaced as we speak. And while there are further details to come about pricing and such, you can start now by submitting your name to receive the latest news on how to perhaps make a putting green, frame some turf, or maybe make your entire backyard look like Ohio Stadium — within reason of course.

The filed turf of course is being replaced this offseason with new field turf that had some fan input, and all those rubber pellets and green turf have to go somewhere. The turf being replaced was a part of Ohio Stadium from 2014 through 2021 and saw the Buckeyes go 48-4. Guys like Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, the Bosa brothers, Justin Fields, Chase Young, and many, many more stars ran, sweated, and did some of their best work on top of its green hue.

As more information becomes available, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.

Take a look at the ripped up Ohio Stadium turf as new field gets installed

Look at the empty slate that is Ohio Stadium as the program installs new field turf for this season. #GoBucks

By now, you know that the field turf inside Ohio Stadium — the venerable ‘Shoe — is being replaced. According to many, it was well past time as we watched the colors on the field fade over time and some players lose their footing.

As those observations were made during the season last year, the fine folks at Ohio State confirmed that new turf would go in during the offseason and that input would be taken from fans on the new design.

Bonus!

The winning design was announced, and we must say, it’s a typical classic look without going too crazy. Fine by us, because Ohio State is a brand in and of its own and there’s no reason to go with a crazy color design to separate the program.

The season is now just a little over a couple of months away and we’ve got our first look at the turf being ripped up and replaced. And if you haven’t gotten a good look, you can the blank palate thanks to Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith.

We can’t wait to see the finished product on a high-definition streaming device or larger-than-life television this fall.

Ohio State begins installation of new field turn in Ohio Stadium

It won’t be long before we see the fresh new look of Ohio Stadium.

Ohio Stadium is getting a facelift as the new field turf installation has begun. The turf was last replaced prior to the 2014 season. A decision to replace the aging turf was made after players began losing their footing early last season. Fans also noted the fading scarlet resembling a shade of pink while watching on TV.

Fans were given the opportunity to submit designs for the new field and some of those designs… well, let’s just say fans are creative. Ultimately though, Ohio State chose to go a more traditional route with a few minor tweaks.

The biggest changes fans will see are the font used in the endzones, some striping at the goal posts, and two Buckeye leaves at each 35-yard line. Regardless of whether you love the new look or wish the OSU brass would’ve done more, The ‘Shoe will have a fresh look come fall.

Ohio State expects the turf installation to be completed by early July. When the new look is finished, we’ll be sure to give you a glimpse of the updated design.

Ohio Stadium is turning 100, and the celbration begins Saturday with the spring game

One hundred years is a long time for the venerable Ohio Stadium. Here’s what is planned for this year, starting with the spring game on Saturday.

The old Horseshoe is turning 100 years old and the celebration and almost year-long party begins on Saturday with the annual LiFEsports spring game.

“Ohio Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of all Buckeyes and it is a place of historic significance,” said President Kristina M. Johnson in a statement. “Families have celebrated a loved one’s academic achievement here, champions have been crowned here and it has helped so many of us fall in love with what it means to be a part of the Ohio State community. We are so excited to enjoy 100 years in the ’Shoe with thousands of our closest friends and we look forward to the celebration ahead this season.”

The big ‘ole stadium on the banks of the Olentangy is one of the most recognizable in all of sports. Its horseshoe design has been entertaining fans for football games, commencements, concerts, and more throughout its 100 years.

The first game in the venerable venue took place on Oct. 7, 1922, vs. Ohio Wesleyan. Since then, more than 36 million fans have streamed through her gates throughout history.

“I don’t know if there is a more iconic structure in college athletics than Ohio Stadium,” said Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletic Director Gene Smith. “Ohio Stadium has been home to so many wonderful memories, thrilling moments and important events over the past 100 years, and the university, the Department of Athletics and Buckeye Nation are all incredibly proud of our venerable and grand structure.”

To commemorate the milestone anniversary, a few key events are scheduled to take place this year:

  • A commemoration at the homecoming game against Rutgers on Oct. 1.
  • Starting Aug. 20, University Archives will sponsor “A Walk in Our ’Shoe: 100 Years of Ohio Stadium” at Thompson Library. The free exhibit will focus on the history of the stadium with historic uniforms and memorabilia from Buckeye coaching legends.
  • Buckeye fans can share their memories and photos as the university collects and circulates those stories throughout the year.
  • Limited edition licensed merchandise celebrating 100 years of Ohio Stadium will be available starting at the Spring Game. It will also be available at The Team Shop or online at gobuckeyes.com.

I’m sure we’ll have more as we step through all the pomp and circumstance of celebrating a place that is on the National Registry of Historic Places throughout the year.

Ohio State unveils new field turf design for Ohio Stadium this fall

Take a look at the new field turf design that’ll be inside the venerable ‘Shoe this fall. #GoBucks

We now know what the new field turf design will look like in Ohio Stadium. The athletic department teased fans with the ability to play a part in the new look of turf that was in need of replacing, but since then, it’s been somewhat quiet until a Tweet went out this weekend saying the new design was forthcoming.

And here we are just a day later for the big reveal. According to a release from the fine folks at Ohio State, input was used from fans to incorporate the following:

  • The Block O at midfield has been emphasized with the outer stroke color adjusted to gray
  • Buckeye leaf decals replace the two X’s at the respective 35-yard line kickoff locations
  • Official OHIO STATE and BUCKEYES athletics word marks, consistent with those on other venue playing surfaces and on team uniforms and apparel, are in the two scarlet end zones
  • The outer boundaries of play have been color adjusted to gray to complement the scarlet end zones
  • Yard line numbering matches the block type font on the players’ uniforms
  • The iconic black/white/scarlet striping pattern, found most prominently on Buckeye helmets, will have a home in each end zone along the end lines, matching the width of the goalposts

Most, if not all elements were taken from many of the over 1,300 designs an OSU spokesman says were submitted by fans with the majority ruling in a lot of cases. Here’s a look at the new design thanks to a picture posted on the Ohio State Football Twitter account.

Of course, the design won’t please everyone. It’s a classic, traditional design that didn’t get too crazy or go too far out of the box, and I for one, say good job on that. But of course, as is the case with most of these things there will be some rumblings and harrowing comments.

Don’t get too excited though. The new turf won’t be installed in time for the annual spring game but will be in place when OSU opens the season against Notre Dame on September 3.

Ohio State close to releasing new turf design for Ohio Stadium

Ohio State says fans have helped inspire the new field turf look which will be revealed soon.

Back in the fall, the field turf at Ohio Stadium got some publicity after fans noted a worn look. The turf was last replaced in 2014, but the scarlet was giving an almost pink vibe from our HD televisions. As a result, the Buckeye brass decided the brand needed to look good and announced the surface would be replaced in time for the 2022 season. But that’s not all, the university said that fans could submit ideas in the process.

Now, here we are. It was announced via Twitter that it’s almost time to reveal what the new design will look like. A collage of many of those designs was posted to the Ohio State Athletics Twitter account and all we can say is fans definitely got creative.

Some are hoping to go all Boise State and make the turf predominantly color-filled, while others tried to stick to a more traditional look. Many submitted designs included an outline of the state at midfield and buckeye leaves scattered throughout.

Ohio State has not given any indication as to what the new turf will look like, but it seems that the fans have helped the creative process and will use at least some elements of the submitted designs. Take a look below to see some of the fan renderings.

It’s hard to imagine that Ohio State would stray too much from a traditional look, but we do expect there to be some changes that will stick out. Of course with any change, some will love it, some will hate it, but one thing is for sure, there will be no shortage of opinions for either side.
