Anthony Richardson lands here in betting odds-based NFL mock draft

Here’s where two Gators are projected to be selected based on the betting market.

Just two days remain until the 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft held in Kansas City, Missouri, starting on Thursday, April 27, and running until Saturday, April 29. While the league prepares for its spring festivities the media and fans have been wondering where their favorite players will go and who their favorite teams select.

Among the many mocks floating out on the interwebs ahead of the big day is CBS Sports writer R.J. White’s offering, in which he employed the bookmakers’ projections to compose his predicted draft order. In his mock, former Florida Gators quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] lands at No. 8 overall with the Tennessee Titans.

Richardson is minus-130 to go in the top five at DraftKings despite his minus-320 odds to go Over 4.5 in draft position, and he’s minus-800 to go inside the top 10. It feels like we need to force him onto a team somewhere in the top 10, but the most likely candidate is Tennessee, which is minus-115 to draft an offensive lineman first and plus-115 to take a quarterback, a closer gap than with any other candidate for QB. The pick value chart pegs a 2024 second-rounder as a price that makes sense to move from No. 11 to 8, and the Falcons now potentially have three second-round picks (including the conditional pick in the Calvin Ridley deal) to help move up for a QB in next year’s draft.

The projection is consistent with most mocks in that Richardson is selected among the first 10 picks, but a tad bit later than many.

Then there is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who White has nabbed at No. 29 by the New Orleans Saints via a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

We’re running out of runway to get a sixth offensive lineman in the mix, so let’s have the Saints bypass defensive lineman/edge rusher (plus-105) for an offensive lineman (plus-200), specifically someone who can fill a need at guard. Torrence is minus-175 to be a first-round pick, and the Saints met with the Florida prospect during the draft process, so it’s a match that makes sense.

Torrence’s projections vary from the mid-first round to the early-second round according to most popular mock drafts — a window that includes the aforementioned prediction.

The most recent UF alumni taken in the first round of the draft are cornerback [autotag]Kaiir Elam[/autotag] (2022, No. 23), tight end [autotag]Kyle Pitts[/autotag] (2021, No. 4), wide receiver [autotag]Kadarius Toney[/autotag] (2021, No. 20) and cornerback [autotag]CJ Henderson[/autotag] (2020, No. 9).

4-Down Territory: The biggest questions for the 2023 NFL draft

In this week’s “4-Down Territory,” Kyle Madson and Doug Farrar get into the four most important questions as we near the 2023 NFL draft.

In this week’s “4-Down Territory,” Kyle Madson of Niners Wire and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire get into the four most important questions as we near the 2023 NFL draft.

  1. Do the Houston Texans HAVE to take a quarterback with the second overall pick?
  2. Is Texas running back Bijan Robinson worthy of a top-five pick, regardless of positional value?
  3. Beyond Aaron Rodgers, how many current NFL quarterbacks will be taken before (or during) the draft?
  4. Who are our underrated prospects who will make big impacts on their NFL teams, regardless of their Day 2 or Day 3 status?

You can watch this week’s episode of “4-Down Territory” right here:

Two former Gators featured in ESPN’s top-100 draft prospects

The 2023 NFL draft is quickly approaching and two Gators are earning high praise from ESPN as top-100 prospects.

The 2023 NFL draft is just four days away and the top-100 lists continue to flow as media outlets around the country prepare for the event. ESPN’s latest top-prospect list, put together by senior writer Jeff Legwold, features a pair of Gators on it, but it’s not the order most will expect.

Offensive guard [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] is ranked No. 14 on Legwold’s list, which is surprising with quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] on the team. Richardson still checks in at No. 27, but it’s Torrence that Legwold thinks is the most talented player coming out of Gainesville this draft cycle.

One of the big reasons Torrence gets the rub here is that he has the talent to start immediately for whichever team drafts him. Richardson likely needs a year or two before taking over an everyday role.

“Torrence has some technical issues and gets caught leaning on occasion, but he’s powerful, quick to adjust and played without a penalty this past season,” Legwold wrote. “He’s a walk-in starter on the interior and showed a glimpse of his play strength against Georgia‘s Jalen Carter and in the Senior Bowl practices.”

Legwold fully expects Richardson to higher than 27th overall in the draft, but he’s ranking players “based on grades, not position.” Richardson has more concerning flaws than Torrence, even if his ceiling is incredibly high.

“(Richardson) can do things most quarterbacks can’t with a power arm and mobility,” he wrote. “Richardson had five touchdown runs of at least 45 yards. He may not get enough credit for the pocket awareness and footwork, but he has to repair career-threatening accuracy issues or he will always be a tantalizing passer who doesn’t do enough between the flashes of brilliance.”

Interestingly, Torrence is the one who might slip out of the first round. Teams don’t usually draft the best-available player after the first dozen or so picks. Playoff teams typically have specific needs that need to be filled, and interior offensive linemen don’t often take priority over the skill position players.

Quarterback is of course one of the most important positions to take care of, and teams are likely to reach for a talented player early if it needs a new option under center.

Five Gators taken in CBS Sports’ latest 7-round NFL mock draft

Five Gators get the call in this full seven-round mock draft from CBS Sports.

The 88th edition of the 2023 NFL draft kicks off on April 27 and runs until April 29 in Kansas City, Missouri, which means the hyped-up spring event is quickly drawing near. The annual amateur draft festivities are among the most-followed storylines at the end of the month, culminating in the start of 259 professional football careers.

Given the fanfare that surrounds the league’s long-running tradition, the sports media has been frothing at the mouth with its respective mock drafts — including CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards, who unveiled his full seven-round projections for every pick in the draft on Friday. Among those selected were five former Florida Gators who look to represent the Orange and Blue at the next level.

The first Gator off Edwards’ board is standout quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who is selected at No. 5 overall by the Seattle Seahawks. Here is what Edwards had to offer on the Gainesville native’s draft prospects.

Seattle restarts the financial clock at quarterback with the selection of Anthony Richardson. He is afforded the time to grow and develop as a professional under the guidance of Geno Smith before being inserted into the starting role.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who is taken with the No. 19 pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Get a gander at Edwards’ take on the bruiser from the bayou.

Tampa Bay invested in its offensive line for years but the unit needs some attention after the past few offseasons. The Buccaneers have at least two long-term pieces to build around with Tristan Wirfs and now O’Cyrus Torrence.

Next up is defensive lineman [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag], who gets the call in the second round at No. 63 by the Kansas City Chiefs, followed by offensive lineman [autotag]Richard Gouraige[/autotag] in the sixth round at No. 189 overall to the Los Angeles Rams. Lastly, there is talented but oft-injured linebacker [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] who goes a few spots later to the New England Patriots at No. 192.

3-round NFL mock draft assumes Anthony Richardson lands outside top 10

Here is a rare NFL mock draft that has Anthony Richardson outside of the top 10. Not much of a justification for it, either.

The 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft takes place in less than a week in Kansas City, Missouri. Starting on Thursday, April 27, and running until Saturday, April 29, the league’s premier spring event has its selection order firmly in place, giving the sports media plenty to write about in the days approaching the seven-round affair.

Among those chiming in with their mocks is CBS Sports’ Will Brinson, who published his latest three-round predictions on Friday with the narrative of “What if the quarterbacks fell in the draft?” driving his selections.

The first Gator off Brinson’s board is standout quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who is selected all the way down at No. 12 by the Houston Texans with a pick acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The Gainesville native is almost a consensus top-10 pick, which makes this projection a bit of a long shot.

Here is what Brinson had to offer on the former Gator QB’s draft prospects.

I’m not sure this is the exact cup of tea for the Texans, but (Will) Anderson (who Brinson has taken at No. 2 overall) and Richardson is a robust haul.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who is taken shortly after with the No. 19 pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – which is about par for the course in the latest mocks. Here is Brinson’s take on the monstrous lineman from Louisiana.

Tampa Bay invested in its offensive line for years but the unit needs some attention after the past few offseasons. The Buccaneers have at least two long-term pieces to build around with Tristan Wirfs and now O’Cyrus Torrence.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag] gets the call at the very end of the second round, with the Kansas City Chiefs taking him at No. 63. The young defender is generally projected in the late second-to-third-round window.

Pair of former Gators made CBS Sports’ latest first-round NFL mock draft

This pair of former Gators gets the first-round nod from CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.

The clock is ticking down as the 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft — which kicks off on April 27 and runs until April 29 in Kansas City, Missouri — quickly approaches. The sports media has been furiously publishing its respective mock drafts, including CBS Sports writer Jonathan Jones, who published his first-round mock draft on Friday

The first Gator off Jones’ board is standout quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who is selected at No. 5 by the Seattle Seahawks with a pick acquired in a trade with the Denver Broncos. Here is what Jones had to offer on the former Gator’s draft prospects.

General manager John Schneider hangs tight and gets his QB of the future. Geno Smith is fantastic, but he’s essentially on a one-year deal, which is perfect for Richardson to wait and learn.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who is taken with the No. 27 pick by the Buffalo Bills. Get a gander at Jones’ take on the bruiser from the bayou.

He’s a Day 1 starter at guard in the NFL, and that’s all I have to say about that. Obviously the Bills could go defensive tackle here, but I can’t overlook Torrence.

Here’s where 3 Gators go in Touchdown Wire’s latest 3-round NFL mock draft

Three Gators are taken in Touchdown Wire’s latest three-round mock draft.

Less than a week remains until the 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft, which kicks off on April 27 and runs until April 29 in Kansas City, Missouri. With the selection order firmly in place, the sports media has been publishing its respective mock drafts including Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar’s latest three-round edition of his mock draft published on Friday, which included three former members of the Orange and Blue.

The first Gator off Farrar’s board is über-athletic quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who lands at No. 8 overall with the Atlanta Falcons. Here is what Farrar had to offer on the former Gator’s draft prospects.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith prefers a heavy play-action offense with multiple tight ends and a power running base. Atlanta has all the parts to work that except for the quarterback (sorry, Desmond Ridder). Richardson would add a developing quarterback sense, unbelievable ability as a runner, and measurables we’ve never seen at the position to that offense. Smith could design all sorts of evil run stuff with Richardson and Tyler Allgeier, and no Falcons receiver or tight end would be able to outrun Richardson’s deep ball. There would be bumps in the road early on, but the payoff could be something else.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who is taken in the second round at No. 49 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Defensive lineman Gervon Dexter gets the call in the third round at No. 71 by the New Orleans Saints — the same spot projected by College Sports Wire’s Patrick Conn.

Here’s where 3 Gators go in College Sports Wire’s final 3-round NFL mock draft

Here’s where these three Gators landed in @College_Wire’s final NFL mock draft.

Just one week remains until the 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft, which kicks off on April 27 and runs until April 29 in Kansas City, Missouri. With the selection order firmly in place, the sports media has been publishing its respective mock drafts including College Sports Wire’s Patrick Conn who released the final three-round edition of the CSW mock on Thursday.

The first Gator off Conn’s board is quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who jumped four spots from the previous mock and is projected to be picked at No. 3 by the Las Vegas Raiders in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. Here is what Conn had to offer on the former Gator’s draft prospects.

The Cardinals seem like the most likely team to drop out of the top five this year. With the Raiders need to get in front of Indianapolis at No. 4, they move up four spots and surrender their No. 38 pick this year as well as their first round pick next year. Las Vegas addresses their quarterback need with Richardson and allow him to sit and develop in 2023.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who dropped 12 spots from the previous mock and is now projected to be taken at No. 28 by the Cincinnati Bengals. Here is the lowdown on the big offensive lineman from Louisiana.

The Bengals have a glaring need at safety but the value just isn’t there at No. 27 overall. Torrence gives them a boost on the interior of the offensive line and he can be an absolute mauler for Cincinnati over the next decade.

Defensive lineman Gervon Dexter gets the call in the third round at No. 71 by the New Orleans Saints.

Three Gators included in ESPN’s latest 3-round 2023 NFL mock draft

If ESPN’s latest three-round mock draft proves to be correct, Billy Napier will be able to point to the NFL draft when recruiting the top talent in the nation.

The NFL draft is a time for players to achieve their ultimate goal of playing professional football. What sometimes goes unsaid, is just how much of a recruiting opportunity the draft provides top programs in the nation. It’s one thing to say that you can put a top recruit in the NFL. It’s another thing to back up that talk with results on draft night.

Thankfully for Gators fans, Florida has never had many issues with proving how good of a development program they are. They consistently put players in the NFL, having at least one player drafted every year in the common draft era, which began in 1967. Even better, they have had a player drafted in the first round nine out of the last ten years, with 2019 the only season without a first-rounder.

In ESPN’s latest three-round mock draft, analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay included three Gators inside the first 102 picks, with [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] going in the first round to Indianapolis, [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] going in the second round, also to Indianapolis, and [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag] going in the third round, to Cleveland.

Here is what McShay had to say about Richardson going No. 4 overall to the Colts:

Indy has to solve the problem under center. Richardson might not be ready to play right away, but the sky is the limit on his potential. With a huge arm and great mobility, he’d be a dynamic player running new coach Shane Steichen’s offense.

Here is what Kiper Jr. had to say about Torrence going No. 35 overall to the Colts:

If we’re giving the Colts a quarterback in Round 1, we should help that passer here. Torrence can clear running lanes. He and Quenton Nelson would form one of the league’s most tenacious guard tandems.

Here is what McShay had to say about Dexter going No. 74 overall to the Browns:

Welcome to the NFL draft, Cleveland. I’m wasting no time once the Browns are finally on the clock in addressing the roster’s biggest hole. It’s a thin defensive tackle class, but Dexter gives them depth up the middle and some interior pass-rushing upside thanks to his speed.

Richardson has been in the conversation to be the No. 1 overall pick throughout the entire process. In this mock draft, he would be the third quarterback taken after Bryce Young (No. 1 to Carolina) and CJ Stround (No. 1 to Houston).

If the Colts can manage to land both Richardson and Torrence (a 2022 consensus All-American offensive guard), they could be in a position to compete for a long time, given the effectiveness and familiarity between signal-caller and sworn protector. Dexter will provide the Browns with much-needed depth on the defensive line.

The first round of the 2023 NFL draft will begin on Thursday, April 27 from Kansas City. It will be broadcast on ESPN and the NFL Network. Rounds two through seven will continue on Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29.

Here’s where two Gators go in USA TODAY Sports’ latest NFL mock draft

Just 10 days from the NFL draft! Here’s where USA TODAY Sports has a pair of former Gators going.

Just 10 days remain until the 88th annual edition of the 2023 NFL draft, which kicks off on April 27 and runs until April 29 in Kansas City, Missouri. With the selection order firmly in place, the sports media has been publishing its respective mock drafts including USA TODAY Sports’ Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, who released his latest mock draft on Monday with less than two weeks remaining.

The first Gator off Middlehurst-Schwartz’s board is quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who lands with the Indianapolis Colts with the fourth-overall pick. Here is what he had to offer on the former Gator’s potential near the top of the draft.

Owner Jim Irsay summed up the current moment in the draft process with a seemingly meaningless tweet Sunday, leaving fans to decipher any intention behind how he decided to order the photos of the top four quarterbacks in the draft. Richardson earns this spot not due to Irsay placing him first among those photos, but instead for the remarkable potential he would bring to a franchise burned out on short-term solutions. If this pairing does materialize, it would be a boon to both Richardson and coach Shane Steichen, whose track record suggests he’d do a fine job of making use of the 6-4, 244-pounder’s dazzling deep passing and singular mobility.

The second Florida alumnus selected is offensive lineman [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag], who sneaks into the first round with the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 30 pick overall. Here is Middlehurst-Schwartz’s take on the big man from the bayou.

Philadelphia seems like a strong candidate to trade out of this slot, but if the team stands pat, Howie Roseman doesn’t need to be sold on adding more talent along the offensive line. The 6-5, 330-pound Torrence would help the Eagles prepare for the looming post-Jason Kelce future by solidifying the right guard spot and allowing Cam Jurgens to eventually take over at center.
