Everything Juwan Howard had to say after Michigan basketball beat Oakland in OT

The full transcript of what Juwan Howard said in the postgame press conference after Michigan basketball’s OT scare against Oakland.

Michigan survived against a winless Oakland Grizzlies team, winning in overtime, 81-71, on Sunday night.

But, there were moments when it seemed perilous, as the Wolverines repeatedly turned the ball over, especially early in the game. However, the maize and blue settled in and, with freshman center Hunter Dickinson and senior forward Isaiah Livers taking the charge, pulled away for the team’s second victory of the year.

After the game, head coach Juwan Howard discussed Dickinson’s play at length, why the Wolverines turned the ball over so early and often, the broadcast timeout exchange with Livers and much more.

Five takeaways: Michigan survives Oakland in OT

In a surprising turn of events, Michigan basketball struggles to get past the winless Oakland Grizzlies, having to take the game to overtime

It was a game that shouldn’t have even been in question, yet the Wolverines struggled mightily against the Oakland Grizzlies, a team that came into Crisler Center 0-3 and doesn’t have nearly as much talent as their in-state counterpart.

Yet, the zone defense stymied and stifled the Michigan offense, and carelessness and frustration took over from there.

Point guard Mike Smith found himself in early foul trouble, and as a result, the maize and blue looked rudderless with him on the bench, and the Wolverines went to the locker room with a halftime deficit. However, he was back for the bulk of the second half, but foul trouble put him back on the bench late. It ended up being a game, with Michigan finally cutting into the lead and pulling ahead with eight minutes left in the game, but it continued to go back and forth and the two teams went to overtime. However, the Wolverines survived, winningย 81-71.

But it wasn’t pretty, nor was it expected. Here’s what we saw from the game.

Michigan State basketball will renew their annual rivalry match-up with the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies on Dec. 13 at the Breslin Center.

Oakland released their official schedule on Friday afternoon, and it included a road game at the Spartans.

This will mark the ninth straight year and 14th time since 2005 that MSU-Oakland have played on the hardwood. Despite a few close calls, the Spartans are undefeated in 17 all-time match-ups against the Golden Grizzlies.

Yesterday, it was reported that Michigan State will host Western Michigan on Dec. 6. With the addition of Oakland, MSU now has only two open slots left on their non-conference slate.

Here’s what we currently know about the 2020-21 MSU basketball schedule based on reports and confirmed dates/opponents:

  • Nov. 28 โ€“ Notre Dame (home non-conference game)
  • Dec. 1 โ€“ at Duke (part of Champions Classic)
  • Dec. 6 โ€“ Western Michigan (home non-conference game)
  • Dec. 9 โ€“ at Virginia (part of ACC-Big Ten Challenge)
  • Dec. 13 โ€“ Oakland (home non-conference game)

A full schedule announcement from the Spartans should hopefully be coming in the next week.
