We are still awaiting the official announcement, but the Michigan State basketball non-conference schedule appears to be finalized — and just in time for the season that starts next week.

Kyle Austin of MLive reported on Tuesday that the Spartans will open the season against in-state foe Eastern Michigan on Nov. 25 (the first day games can be played this season). The game will reportedly take place at the Breslin Center, but there are no additional details at this point in time.

With the season-opener officially known, we have what is believed to be the finalized non-conference schedule. Here is the non-conference slate:

  • Nov. 25 – Eastern Michigan
  • Nov. 28 – Notre Dame
  • Dec. 1 – at Duke (part of Champions Classic)
  • Dec. 4 – Detroit
  • Dec. 6 – Western Michigan
  • Dec. 9 – at Virginia (part of ACC-Big Ten Challenge)
  • Dec. 13 – Oakland

Keep in mind that this is based on reports and announcements from other schools since Michigan State has yet to officially post their schedule. The Spartans should be announcing something very soon, based on this tweet from MSU Associate Athletic Director Kevin Pauga:

The Big Ten has yet to reveal the conference slate for the 2020-21 season, but as Austin pointed out in a follow-up tweet, it appears the conference schedule won’t begin until after Dec. 13. In the past two seasons, there were a pair of conference games in the middle of December to break up the non-conference slate, but that won’t be the case this year.

Michigan State basketball will renew their annual rivalry match-up with the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies on Dec. 13 at the Breslin Center.

Oakland released their official schedule on Friday afternoon, and it included a road game at the Spartans.

This will mark the ninth straight year and 14th time since 2005 that MSU-Oakland have played on the hardwood. Despite a few close calls, the Spartans are undefeated in 17 all-time match-ups against the Golden Grizzlies.

Yesterday, it was reported that Michigan State will host Western Michigan on Dec. 6. With the addition of Oakland, MSU now has only two open slots left on their non-conference slate.

Here’s what we currently know about the 2020-21 MSU basketball schedule based on reports and confirmed dates/opponents:

  • Nov. 28 – Notre Dame (home non-conference game)
  • Dec. 1 – at Duke (part of Champions Classic)
  • Dec. 6 – Western Michigan (home non-conference game)
  • Dec. 9 – at Virginia (part of ACC-Big Ten Challenge)
  • Dec. 13 – Oakland (home non-conference game)

A full schedule announcement from the Spartans should hopefully be coming in the next week.

Izzo hopeful MSU schedule finalized in ‘couple of days’; could include Duke, Notre Dame

The first day games can be played this season is Nov. 25 so we should hopefully get the final schedule announced soon.

We are creeping closer and closer to the college basketball season, and there’s still one big question Spartan fans want answered: who will MSU play this season? Well, we could finally be getting some answers “in a couple of days.”

Michigan State men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo met with reporters on Thursday via Zoom to discuss a number of items related to his Spartans — one of which is the still to be determined schedule. Izzo said there still is no update at this point but that he is hopeful the schedule will be figured out in the next few days. He also hinted at who potentially will be on the schedule — Duke, Notre Dame and other in-state foes.

See a pair of tweets from Brendan Quinn’s of The Athletic below:

This is all exciting to hear after the entire projected MSU non-conference schedule was thrown out the window in the past few weeks with the collapse of the Orlando bubble plan. That news broke earlier this week.

MSU had previously been pegged to play four games in Orlando — three games in the Orlando Invitational and Duke in the Champions Classic. From what Izzo said today, it appears the Duke match-up is still going to be played just in a new location.

At this point, it’s hard to truly project who the Spartans will battle in non-conference play, but we know there will still be five spots to fill should the Champions Classic and ACC-Big Ten Challenge go on as expected. We are also still waiting for the release of the Big Ten conference schedule.

The first day games can be played this season is Nov. 25 so we should hopefully get the final schedule announced soon.

Ohio State basketball to host Oakland in its 2020-2021 home opener

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Ohio State basketball team will host Oakland in its 2020-2021 home opener.

There’s still a long way to go before the college basketball slate is solidified next season for Ohio State. Like most years though, we’ll start to get a little trickle from here until then before it’s all set in stone.

One of those nuggets was made available Monday and it involves what team the Buckeyes will play for their home opener in 2020-2021. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, that team will be Oakland at Value City Arena. No date has been set yet.

It’s not Oakland, like California, but rather a Horizon League opponent from Auburn Hills, Michigan. The Golden Grizzlies will be looking to build upon a 14-19 finish this past year.

It’ll still be a while before we know the rest of OSU’s schedule, but there has been some information available on other matchups already out there through various sources. Ohio State is already set to play in the Battle 4 Atlantis from November 24-27 that will also feature Duke, Memphis, Wichita State, West Virginia, Creighton, and Utah.

Chris Holtman also confirmed earlier in the year that the Buckeyes will host in-state opponent Akron at some point in the non-conference.

Hopefully, by then we’ll be coming out of the current pandemic and life and sports can get back to normal.
