How were 8 tight ends drafted before George Kittle in 2017?

George Kittle was drafted in the fifth round out of Iowa by the 49ers in 2017. He was the ninth tight end selected.

George Kittle has proven to be one of the great draft steals in many years. The San Francisco 49ers selected the tight end from Iowa in the fifth round, 146th overall, in 2017. Eight TEs were chosen before Kittle. How did that work out?

O.J. Howard (first, 19 overall)

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

O.J. Howard came out of Alabama to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a big rep and high hopes for the NFC South team. It has not materialized. Howard does have 12 TD catches — the same number as Kittle — but he has far less receptions, 94 for 1,456 yards.

Which Bucs tight end should you start in Week 12?

Jenna Laine of ESPN offers advice to fantasy football owners on what to do with Buccaneers tight ends O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard hasn’t been having the breakout year the team, and fantasy football owners, were hoping for.

The third-year tight end out of Alabama has just 17 receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown this season. He drew the ire of head coach Bruce Arians earlier in the season, and after his careless turnover against the Saints in Week 11’s loss, it looks like the season is spiraling out of control for Howard.

So, how should fantasy owners proceed with Howard? Was last week’s “benching” a sign of things to come or just a hiccup? Jenna Laine of ESPN offered her two cents on the matter.

Take a look.

“Howard will continue his role as a run-blocker, but as a pass-catcher, I don’t think they can trust him fully. His bobbled pass that he attempted to juggle behind his body sent the Bucs spiraling into a 20-0 deficit early against the Saints last week. Brate, meanwhile, caught 10 of 14 targets last week, so he’ll be the one getting the bulk of opportunities in the receiving game.”

The best catch Howard’s made all season did’t even come on the field, but while he was attending a Tampa Bay Rays game.

Yeah, it’s been a strange year for Howard.

Watch: Demario Davis sets up Michael Thomas TD with heads-up interception

New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis made a heads-up interception to help set up a touchdown pass for Michael Thomas and Drew Brees.

Turnovers have been hard for the New Orleans Saints to come by this season. They’ve had five different interceptions overturned by a penalties throughout the year, but there was no doubting the latest pick — this time by linebacker Demario Davis. It followed a tackle at the line of scrimmage in which Davis used textbook-perfect technique.

Davis was in the right spot at the right time to snag a ball jarred out of Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard, which Saints safety Marcus Williams managed to punch out. There was some initial confusion whether the play was an interception or a fumble, but the ball never touched the ground, crediting Davis with his first interception of the year. See it for yourself:

Not to be undone, the Saints offense used the opportunity in scoring range to go get a touchdown. Quarterback Drew Brees lobbed a high-arcing pass to wide receiver Michael Thomas on a corner route into the end zone, which confused the inexperienced Buccaneers secondary and allowed him to walk in untouched for six points. It was about as perfect a sequence of plays as you could draw up. Here’s the other segment of this Saints highlight reel:

Ranking 12 of the most disappointing players in the 2019 NFL season

Saquon Barkley and Le’Veon Bell, New York’s best RBs, are among those NFL players who have failed to perform in 2019.

The NFL is heading into the 11th week of its season. Some players have delivered in a big way, while others who were expected to perform at a certain level have not. Ranking a dozen players who have not reached the levels hoped.

12. Adam Vinatieri

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Adam Vinatieri is on his way to a spot in Canton. However, his 2019 season will not be a fond memory unless he regains his kicking stroke. The venerable Vinatieri has missed five field goals in 19 attempts and six PATs. The Colts are sticking with him, which may be more of an indicator of what else is out there.
