Everything we know following Oregon’s 72-58 win over Arizona State

Oregon played a solid game, and it needed to, against Arizona State to come out with a 72-58 win, their 8th straight.

It seems like Arizona State gives Oregon fits whenever the two teams meet up. It doesn’t matter who is on the roster. Even the team that had Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally, and Ruthy Hebard had trouble with the Sun Devils.

Today wasn’t any different as these Ducks had to scratch and claw for everything they got. But Oregon was able to answer every potential rally from Arizona State to come out with a 72-58 victory in a game that was a make-up contest from Jan. 13.

Nyara Sabally dominated on the inside with 22 points and six rebounds with Te-Hina Paopao adding 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Ironically, only Endyia Rogers with USC was the only Duck to have played ASU in a game. But they got plenty of experience today and they’ll need that experience as the two teams are scheduled to meet again in five days in Tempe.

Oregon is now 14-5 overall and 7-1 in conference action. The Ducks haven’t lost since that setback to Stanford Jan. 7.

Everything we know following Oregon’s 80-48 rout over USC

Led by Nyara Sabally, the Oregon inside game was just too much for the Trojans to handle in the easy win over USC.

Oregon knew before the season that this women’s basketball team had the chance to be special. All they had to do was to get everyone healthy at the same time.

For the last six games, Kelly Graves has been able to play a full roster and the results more than show it.

The No. 19 Ducks have won their sixth straight game with an 80-48 rout over USC. Oregon is now 14-5 overall and 6-1 in conference action.

If anyone was worried if Oregon would be a bit sluggish after playing just once in the last nine days, there was no need to be concerned.

USC, who lost by two in overtime to OSU just two days ago, was playing without center Alyssa Pili and the Ducks took advantage of their post depth and played most of the game inside the key. Nyara Sabally dominated with 23 points and seven rebounds.

Everything we know following Oregon’s nail-biting 70-66 win over Utah

Oregon’s winning streak now grows to 5 games after surviving a closer-than-expected game against Utah on Wednesday.

Coming into this game, it felt like one that the Oregon Ducks shouldn’t have much trouble with. They were riding a 4-game winning streak and coming off two of the best wins we’ve seen from a Kelly Graves team in a long time. They jumped back into the AP Top-25 poll, coming in at No. 19, and had momentum on their side.

Maybe it was the 11 a.m. tip time? Maybe they were due for some regression. Whatever it was, though, the Ducks didn’t quite look the part in their 70-66 win over the Utah Utes on Wednesday morning.

All that matters, in the end, is a win, and they checked that box. They have now won 5-straight and will return to Matthew Knight Arena on Friday night to try and keep it rolling against UCLA. Here’s how it happened on Wednesday.

Everything we know following Oregon Ducks gritty 68-61 win over Washington Huskies

The Oregon Ducks picked up their 9th-straight win over the Washington Huskies, thanks in large part to big nights from Endyai Rogers and Nyara Sabally.

The Washington Huskies gave Kelly Graves and the Oregon Ducks their best shot on Friday night, but the Ducks were able to come out on top after a gritty game between two conference rivals.

After a back and forth game throughout much of the contest, the Ducks were finally able to pull away late in the fourth quarter, thanks in large part to a spark from Chanaya Pinto, who has really come on as of late.

The two heroes for Oregon Nyara Sabally and Endyia Rogers, who combined for 42 points in the contest. It was dearly needed, while both Te-Hina Paopao and Sedona Prince had off-nights.

Here’s how it all happened:

Nyara Sabally expected to be ‘good to go’ after knee injury vs. UConn

After what looked like a scary knee injury vs. UConn, Nyara Sabally practiced on Thursday and is expected to be okay going forward.

A joyous and celebration-filled afternoon upset over the No. 9 UCONN Huskies was interrupted on Monday when one of the Oregon Ducks’ best players, Nyara Sabally, crumpled to the floor after an awkward landing and looking to be in serious pain while holding her knee.

Sabally would eventually be helped off of the floor and into the locker room, where she would later emerge from with a bag of ice wrapped on her right leg. Her ability to limp through the postgame celebration and interact with teammates seemed to be some good news, and head coach Kelly Graves noted afterward that things looked to be more positive than expected.

On Thursday afternoon when meeting with media members, Graves gave an update on Sabally, noting that she practiced with the team and should be “good to go” for Friday’s game against the Washington Huskies.

Sabally is a huge piece for the Ducks, averaging 15.3 points per game, and 7.1 rebounds. Sabally has had a history of knee injuries in her career, but this one doesn’t seem to be as serious as we initially suspected.

‘A scare more than anything;’ Kelly Graves hopeful that Nyara Sabally will be fine after knee injury

The initial prognosis on Nyara Sabally’s injury is pretty good, with Kelly Graves hoping it was “a scare more than anything.”

Starting at 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon, the crowd at Matthew Knight Arena was about as loud as it has been in years, with Oregon Duck fans on their feet cheering on the home team as they dominated the No. 9 UCONN Huskies. It was raucous, unrestrained, and certainly exuberant.

Until it wasn’t.

With about 5 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, with the Ducks holding a double-digit lead, you could hear a pin drop on the court. Nyara Sabally, Oregon’s leading scorer, was down on the ground, holding her right knee and writhing in pain. As a supremely talented player with an annoying history with knee injuries, this is one of the few things that could have killed the atmosphere in MKA on the afternoon.

Eventually, Sabally was helped off the court and into the locker room, and the game resumed. Minutes later, she limped back onto the bench with ice wrapped around her knee.

The early prognosis is good, and Sabally is expected to be okay, according to head coach Kelly Graves.

When talking to the media after the game, Graves noted that tweaks to her knee are something that Sabally is used to, and an annoying habit that she’s had to deal with during her career. Here is his full quote:

“I think she’s going to be fine,” Graves said. “You never know with those kinds of things. She’s not with a doctor right now, so that’s a good sign. It’s just something she’s had to live with, you know. Kind of each and every day, she gets it tweaked, there’s a little swelling. She just shows a lot of heart and keeps showing up and keeps doing it. I’m just hopeful that she is well, and that it was kind of a scare more than anything.”

After two historic upsets over No. 7 Arizona and No. 9 UCONN, the Ducks now have a few days off before they head up to Washington for a road stand against both the Huskies and Washington State Cougars. We will have to wait and see if Sabally is healthy enough to play by then, but the hope is that her season can continue with the Ducks.

Everything we know following Oregon’s wild OT comeback win over No. 7 Arizona

The Oregon Ducks picked up a massive upset win over the No. 7 Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, coming away with a buzzer-beater win in OT.

What a way to win for the Oregon Ducks.

A couple of days after the men’s basketball team upset the No. 3 UCLA Bruins in overtime, Kelly Graves and his squad joined in on the action, beating the No. 7 Arizona Wildcats in overtime, 68-66.

In a game that they trailed by double-digits in the fourth quarter, Oregon stormed back and forced overtime thanks to stellar play from Nyara Sabally, Te-Hina Paopao, and Sedona Prince.

It was the Ducks’ best win of the season, and now gives them a ton of momentum going into Monday’s game against No. 11 UCONN, who comes to Matthew Knight Arena.

Everything we know following Oregon’s 80-68 loss to No. 2 Stanford

Oregon didn’t have an answer for Stanford’s Lexie Hull, who burned the Ducks for a career-high 33 points on seven threes.

It all comes down to making shots and tonight, No. 2 Stanford found and made nearly every shot it wanted while Oregon struggled to find open shooters.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team made a couple of small runs at the Cardinal, but Stanford eventually came out with an 80-68 win over Oregon. It was the Ducks’ first conference loss on the season.

Oregon didn’t have an answer for Lexie Hull, who lit up the Ducks for a career-high 33 points on 7-of-10 shooting from three-point range.

Nyara Sabally, Endyia Rogers and Te-Hina Paopao did their best to keep their team in it, and in the fourth quarter, Oregon had a couple of chances to cut the Stanford lead to five or even four, but it wasn’t to be.

Kelly Graves has optimistic outlook for Nyara Sabally after knee injury in season-opener

Nyara Sabally went down with an apparent knee injury vs. Idaho State, but coach Kelly Graves had some cautious optimism about her outlook.

Whenever Nyara Sabally goes down to the floor and holds on to her knee, any knee, the world of Oregon Ducks women’s basketball holds its collective breath.

That’s exactly what happened in the middle of the third quarter during the season opener against Idaho State. The 6-foot-5 forward went after a loose ball and hit the floor hard. The training staff and head coach Kelly Graves went out to help Sabally walk off the floor and straight into the locker room.

Fortunately for everyone involved, a crisis might have been averted as Sabally came out to sit on the bench with ice on her knee and watched the rest of the game where the Ducks went on to win 91-34.

Sabally has had a history of knee problems as they have caused her to miss two seasons. Losing her for any length of time would be a big blow to the Ducks as guards Te-Hina Paopao and Endyia Rogers are already missing time with various maladies.

Oregon (1-0) will continue its season Sunday, Nov. 14 as the Ducks host Dixie State for a 5 p.m. tip at Matthew Knight Arena.

Good luck to Pac-12 guards trying to go inside to score against Oregon in the coming years.

The Ducks women’s basketball team just got taller as they secured a commitment from 6-foot-7 center Kennedy Basham out of Arizona.

According to ESPN.com, Basham ranks as the 44th best prospect in the country and the No. 6 post. It helps to know fellow Oregon recruit Jennah Isai, also from Arizona, who has played with Basham on the prep level.

Basham joins one of the best-recruiting classes head coach Kelly Graves has ever assembled at Oregon as she joins not only Isai (No. 35), but guard Chance Gray (No. 7 overall).

Basham will be eligible to play at Oregon for the 2022-23 season where the Ducks could have a front line of 6-foot-5 Nyara Sabally, 6-foot-7 Sedona Prince and 6-foot-8 Phillipina Kyei.
