Iowa at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa Hawkeyes at Northwestern Wildcats odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 16 Iowa Hawkeyes (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) and Northwestern Wildcats (3-5, 1-4) meet Saturday at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Iowa vs. Northwestern odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The Hawkeyes fell 27-7 at Wisconsin last week, a second consecutive setback and non-cover after a 6-0 SU/5-1 ATS start. The 27 points allowed were a season high, and Iowa has yielded 25.5 PPG across the past two while averaging just 7.0 PPG.

The Wildcats also enter on a two-game skid. They were outscored 74-21 in two games at Michigan and home to Minnesota during the span. They enter 0-2 ATS in the past two, and 2-6 ATS overall.

Iowa at Northwestern odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 26, Northwestern 17

Money line

Iowa (-500) will cost you five times your potential return. That’s risky considering it’s on the road and in the midst of a two-game win streak. It’s also risky since the Hawkeyes have managed just 14 total points across the past two outings.

AVOID.

Against the spread

NORTHWESTERN +11.5 (-110) catching double digits at home is the play. The Wildcats have really struggled offensively this season, putting up just 19.0 PPG. But they’re decent defensively, and Iowa has had offensive issues of its own lately.

Look for the Hawkeyes to win, but the Wildcats to keep it within one score.

Over/Under

OVER 40.5 (-110) is the lean here, although don’t expect a track meet. Winds gusting 12-15 mph might wreak havoc on the kicking game, too. That’s always a concern in a tight game when playing the Over. I still expect a total in the 40’s as Iowa gets well against Northwestern.

Northwestern at Michigan odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Northwestern Wildcats at Michigan Wolverines odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Northwestern Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) and No. 6 Michigan Wolverines (6-0, 3-0) meet for a Saturday noon ET game at Michigan Stadium. Below, we look at the Northwestern vs. Michigan odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Northwestern is coming off a 21-7 victory over Rutgers. The Wildcats allowed a 97-yard touchdown drive early in the second quarter and almost nothing else in a contest that saw them hold the Scarlet Knights to 222 total yards. On the season, NU has struggled in finishing on drives. The Wildcats’ red-zone scoring percentage (68.2%) ranks 122nd in the nation.

The Wolverines are coming off a bye week after a three-point win (32-29) at Nebraska Oct. 9. Michigan covered a 2.5-point spread against the Cornhuskers and has gone 5-1 against the spread this season. UM has been stingy against both the run and the pass in holding foes to 15.5 points per game (eighth FBS).

Northwestern at Michigan odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan 31, Northwestern 14

Money line

Peg the true odds as being sandwiched in the substantial middle area here: AVOID.

Against the spread

The Wildcats are 5-1 ATS against winning teams. The underdog is 4-1 over the last five Michigan-Northwestern contests.

With just the slightest fade to Michigan’s offense but with little faith in the Wildcats offense, BACK NORTHWESTERN +23.5 (-110). What faith there is in the visitors is invested in a passing game that may give Michigan defensive backs trouble.

Over/Under

The Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between these Big Ten crossover foes. Saturday may not offer up idea weather conditions for scoring in the Detroit area.

TAKE THE UNDER 50.5 (-105).

Rutgers at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Rutgers at Northwestern odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) and Northwestern Wildcats (2-3, 0-2) meet for a noon ET tussle Saturday at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill. Below, we look at the Rutgers vs. Northwestern odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rutgers is coming off a rough stretch against Big Ten undefeated Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State. The RU defense has been solid: the Knights rank in the FBS top-50 in pass defense (yardage), and the team’s 366.8 yards allowed per game ranks a respectable 60th in the nation. Rutgers had three giveaways in a 52-13 loss to Ohio State but has otherwise had just two over the rest of its slate. That ball security has fed into a plus-5 in overall turnover margin.

The Wildcats are back at home after a bye week that came on the heels of a 56-7 loss at Nebraska. Northwestern allowed 657 total yards in that game, including 427 on the ground. On the season, NU ranks 126th in the nation in run defense (237.2 yards per game).

Rutgers at Northwestern odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:20 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers -135 (bet $135 to win $100) | Northwestern +110 (bet $100 to win $110)

Rutgers at Northwestern odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Rutgers 27, Northwestern 21

Money line

For a number of reasons — mainly that the analytics for these teams fall in the muddy middle in a lot of categories — this contest is one that’s tough to figure all around.

There is a bit more belief in Rutgers, especially if you toss the contest against a much more Ohio State Buckeyes squad from Oct. 2. And that’s the way the public has started to shade this one late in the week. But the Scarlet Knights coming off three tough, physical games and going on the road for a potentially sleepy early Saturday game does make for some skepticism.

PASS on the money line and look to leverage the 2.5 points against the spread.

Against the spread

Rutgers is 7-0 ATS in its last seven road games.

The Knights outgained Michigan, 352 yards to 275, in a game they lost, 20-13. Two weeks later at home against Michigan State, RU was undone by two explosive-play touchdowns in the second half. The Knights led that game, 14-13, midway through the second quarter.

A bit of marginal regression toward average in converting key third downs and red-zone opportunities would make for confirmation of a Big Ten East team on the rise.

BACK RUTGERS -2.5 (-107). Consider a partial-unit play here, as the lean is not a strong one.

Over/Under

Peg this one as having enough of a chance at a close-throughout contest, one that spirals the total into the high-40s or low 50s. Keep an eye on the forecast for a windy-by-the lake day in the Chicago area, but BACK THE OVER 45.5 (-107). Again, consider this one a very close call — a partial-unit play may be wise.

Northwestern at Nebraska odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Northwestern at Nebraska odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Northwestern Wildcats (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) and Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-3, 0-2) clash in a Saturday night Big Ten West battle in Lincoln, Neb. Kickoff for the contest at Memorial Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Northwestern vs. Nebraska odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Northwestern is coming off a 35-6 home win over the Ohio Bobcats. The Wildcats piled up 7.3 yards per carry in bolting for 373 rushing yards in that game. For the season, NU has rushed for 214.0 yards per game and 5.1 YPC; both figures rank fourth in the Big Ten.

The Cornhuskers are coming off back-to-back one-score losses against ranked foes. Nebraska was undone 23-20 by then-No. 21 (AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports) Michigan State last week. The ‘Huskers outgained the Spartans, 440 yards to 254, in that game.

The Wildcats won last year’s meeting 21-13, battling back from a 13-7 halftime deficit in the process. Northwestern won four of the last six meetings between the two Big Ten West foes. The Cornhuskers lead the all-time series, 8-6.

Northwestern at Nebraska odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Nebraska 31, Northwestern 17

Money line

PASS on the juice-obscured true odds in this play. Nebraska is the lean but not at a price heavier than -400.

Against the spread

The Cornhuskers are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games following a straight-up loss.

Nebraska has outdistanced three of four foes in yardage by a wide margin. Its performance against a talent gap in the Sept. 18 loss at Oklahoma was a building block. Both Nebraska and Northwestern have been steady on defense and the ‘Huskers have displayed enough drive-efficiency upside to be worthy of a near-two-touchdown figure here.

TAKE NEBRASKA -11.5 (-108).

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

Look for both teams to lean on the run and a moderate exchange of scoreless drives wouldn’t be a surprise either. Neither would some red-zone stalls.

It all spells decent value on the UNDER 51.5 (-107).

Michigan State at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Michigan State at Northwestern odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Michigan State Spartans and Northwestern Wildcats meet Friday in the season opener for both teams at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Michigan State at Northwestern odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Spartans were able to trip up the Wildcats 29-20 last season in East Lansing, one of a few bright spots in an otherwise bleak first campaign for head coach Mel Tucker. Sparty has a pretty decent defense, but the offense will be breaking in a new quarterback and the run game should struggle, too.

The Wildcats turn to former Clemson recruit QB Hunter Johnson under center, and he has one of the top backs in college football to take the pressure off of him. RB Cam Porter has the chance to be one of the top tailbacks in the Big Ten, and OL Peter Skoronski is a star up front.

Michigan State at Northwestern odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Northwestern 26, Michigan State 17

Money line

NORTHWESTERN (-170) isn’t terribly expensive if you would like to just bet them straight up and avoid messing with the points.

The Wildcats, the defending West Division champs in the Big Ten, likely have had this game circled on the schedule for a long time. Not because it is the opener, but because they’re looking for revenge after a loss in East Lansing last season.

Against the spread

NORTHWESTERN -3.5 (+102) is worth a look laying the 3 and a hook, especially at plus-money. The Wildcats will have a very good rush attack and should be able to make noise against a Michigan State side which is very average. If the Wildcats grab the early lead, Sparty doesn’t quite have the pieces in place in the pass game to clap back.

Over/Under

The play is UNDER 46.5 (-110), even though a line in the 40s in this era of college football is rather low but Northwestern is old school, chewing up clock in the run game, while playing suffocating defense.

The lack of top-notch skill position players for Michigan State will make the Wildcats D look even better, too.

Wisconsin at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Wisconsin Badgers at Northwestern Wildcats odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Wisconsin Badgers (15-8 overall, 9-7 Big Ten) visit the Northwestern Wildcats (6-13, 3-12) for a Sunday evening (7 p.m. ET) contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Below, we analyze the Wisconsin-Northwestern college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Wisconsin is No. 21 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Wisconsin at Northwestern: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Wisconsin -275 (bet $275 to win $100) | Northwestern +220 (bet $100 to win $220)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Wisconsin -5.5 (-115) | Northwestern +5.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 130.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Wisconsin at Northwestern: Three things to know

  1. The Badgers beat the Wildcats 68-52 Jan. 20 but have gone just 3-5 in eight games since. Wisconsin has beaten Northwestern five straight times, winning by an average margin of 12 points. Northwestern’s last win in the series came on Feb. 1, 2018, a 60-52 win.
  2. Northwestern is coming off a 73-66 road loss to Illinois on Tuesday. The Wildcats mounted a comeback after falling behind by 18 points early. They eventually got within two points of the No. 5 Illini with 1:54 to play. Illinois took control after that, sending NU to its 12th straight loss.
  3. The Wisconsin offense has recorded a turnover on just 13.7 percent of its possessions, which is the third-best rate in the nation. The Northwestern defense has forced opposing teams to turn the ball over on just 18 percent of all possessions (258th NCAA-I).

Wisconsin at Northwestern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Wisconsin 67, Northwestern 62

Money line (ML)

The Badgers have a solid defense, and their offense can be efficient and productive against lesser defensive teams. Peg Northwestern’s defense as being better than the surface assumption implied by the Wildcats yielding a scoring average of 72.1 PPG.

This tag deserves a PASS but also your attention. Something north of Northwestern +230 makes NU a decent play.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The home team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four games of this series. And that’s the lean here. Northwestern is solid inside, and the Wildcats tend to perform better against slower-paced teams. UW’s tempo figures rank among the slowest in the game.

TAKE THE WILDCATS +5.5 (-105).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Badgers are coming off an ATS loss. The last seven times that occurred, the Under has hit the next time out.

The Under is the lean here, but consider holding out for a total of 131.5.

  • Over/Under: 143.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Northwestern at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. The Illini beat the Wildcats 81-56 as 6.5-point road favorites in the first meeting of the season. Northwestern led 43-28 at the half but was outscored 53-13 in the final 20 minutes. Sophomore C Kofi Cockburn led the Illini attack by scoring 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half. He also had a game-high 12 rebounds.
  2. Northwestern is on an 11-game skid after opening the Big Ten season 3-0. The most recent setback was a 64-50 loss as an 8-point underdog at Rutgers Saturday. The Wildcats trailed 43-40 with 10:29 remaining before a Scarlet Knights 11-2 run sealed it. Sophomore G Chase Audige leads the Wildcats in scoring (12.8 points per game) and junior F Pete Nance leads in rebounds (6.8 RPG).
  3. Illinois, which enters on a 5-game win streak, is coming off a 77-72 overtime victory at Nebraska Friday. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu, who scored 22 of his game-high 31 points in the second half, took over down the stretch as Illinois overcame a 6-point deficit in the final 2:35. He scored the Illini’s final 10 points of regulation and the first 5 points of overtime as Illinois avoided an upset but failed to cover as a 14-point favorite. Dosunmu and Cockburn lead the Illini in scoring (21.7 PPG) and rebounds (10.6 RPG), respectively.

Against the spread (ATS)

ILLINOIS -12.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Illini are 9-1 ATS in the last 10 of this series and there’s no reason to think they can’t cover the spread again.

The ‘Cats are 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 against an opponent with a winning record. They’re also 0-7 straight up in their last seven Big Ten road games, including five losses by double-digits and four by 14 or more points.

ATS: Northwestern 7-9-1 | Illinois 11-7-1

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The line of 143.5 is too close to the projected score. The Under is 5-1-1 in the Illini’s last seven home games; however, the possibility of a blowout would lead to late garbage points that could push this Over.

Below, we analyze the Indiana-Northwestern college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Over/Under: 138.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Indiana at Northwestern: Three things to know

  1. Northwestern won at Indiana 74-67 as a 9-point underdog in late December. Wildcats G Chase Audige scored all 17 of his team-high points in the second half. The sophomore accounted for the Wildcats’ final 11 points as they pulled away from a 63-61 lead in the final 3:01.
  2. Indiana is coming off a 67-65 upset of then-No. 8 Iowa Sunday as a 3.5-point home underdog to complete a season sweep of the Hawkeyes. IU won 81-69 as a 10-point dog in Iowa City when Iowa was ranked No. 4. Sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis leads the Hoosiers in scoring (19.9 points per game), rebounds (9.2 RPG) and blocks (1.8 BPG).
  3. It’s hard to believe Northwestern opened the Big Ten season 3-0 – beating Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State – since the Wildcats have since lost 9 in a row. Their most recent defeat was a 75-70 setback at Purdue Saturday, but they covered the spread as 8-point underdogs. Junior F Miller Kopp leads three Wildcats in double-figures, averaging 13.2 PPG.

Indiana at Northwestern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Indiana 66, Northwestern 64

Money line (ML)

PASS. Not only is Indiana (-190) too chalky, the Hoosiers are too inconsistent to back here.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Place your bet(s) on NORTHWESTERN +4.5 (-115). Indiana is a “Jekyll and Hyde” type of team. The Hoosiers look good in an early January win against Nebraska but followed with an awful performance in a home loss to unranked Purdue. After their first upset of Iowa, they lost to Rutgers.

Until the Hoosiers prove they can play well in back-to-back games, it’s not wise to bet on them.

ATS: Indiana 11-7 | Northwestern 7-8

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 138.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Excluding Jackson-Davis, Indiana’s starters are terrible shooters. Before junior G Rob Phinisee’s 3-pointer at the 1:39 mark and sophomore G Armaan Franklin’s game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left Sunday vs. Iowa, IU’s three starting guards were a combined 2-for-24.

At 44.2%, Franklin is the only starting guard shooting above 40% from the field.

Meanwhile, Northwestern has averaged 66.0 PPG during its 9-game losing streak.

O/U records: Indiana 9-9 | Northwestern 9-6

Rutgers at Northwestern odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Northwestern Wildcats odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (9-6 overall, 5-6 Big Ten) visit the Northwestern Wildcats (6-8, 3-7) in a Sunday evening contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Rutgers-Northwestern college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rutgers at Northwestern: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Rutgers -185 (bet $185 to win $100) | Northwestern +150 (bet $100 to win $150)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Rutgers -3.5 (-115) | Northwestern +3.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 140.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Rutgers at Northwestern: Three things to know

  1. After starting the season 6-1, the Wildcats have lost seven in a row. Northwestern’s losing skid has included two home games — both were against ranked foes (Illinois and Iowa).
  2. Rutgers mauled Michigan State by 30 (67-37) at home Thursday. The Spartans committed 19 turnovers and shot just 28.6% from the field. The Scarlet Knights were a plus-7 in the turnover margin and have now been on that side of the turnover ledger in 10 of their last 11 games.
  3. RU took down the Wildcats 77-73 in overtime last season. The Knights were outshot from distance (47.8% to 20.0%), but Rutgers was strong in winning a 44-25 battle on the boards. Over the last seven meetings between the Knights and Wildcats, the visiting team is 5-2 against the spread.

Rutgers at Northwestern: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 72, Northwestern 67

Money line (ML)

These two offenses are similar, but Northwestern’s attack has exhibited more downside lately. Rutgers is the lean but not worth a play at -185.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Knights should have a fair measure of confidence after winning on the road at Indiana and then routing MSU. RU can defend mid-range and 3-point jumpers at a high level and is 5-1-1 ATS when following a straight-up win.

The multiple-possession tag here is a little scary, but look for the Knights to get a boost in the hidden-scoring departments of points off turnovers and second-chance points. BACK RUTGERS -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean here is toward a game-flow bell curve hitting on too many numbers between 139-142. PASS.

  • Over/Under: 135.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Northwestern at Wisconsin: Three things to know

  1. Northwestern enters on a 5-game slide straight-up and ATS, most recently falling to now-No. 4 Iowa 96-73 Sunday as a 9.5-point home underdog. It’s been quite a bad turnabout for the Wildcats, who opened the season 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten play. Junior F Miller Kopp leads four Wildcats in double-figures, averaging 13.5 points per game.
  2. Wisconsin is coming off a two-game road trip in which it beat Rutgers 60-54 Friday as a 2.5-point favorite following a 77-54 loss at then-No. 5 Michigan last Tuesday as a 2.5-point underdog. Senior G D’Mitrik Trice leads the Badgers in points (15.0 PPG) and assists (3.6 assists per game), while senior F Micah Potter averages 12.3 PPG and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game.
  3. Wisconsin owns a 4-game win streak vs. Northwestern, including a 63-48 home victory as a 13-point favorite in last season’s only meeting. The Wildcats’ last win vs. the Badgers was a 60-52 upset as 2.5-point road underdogs Feb. 1, 2018.

Northwestern at Wisconsin: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Wisconsin 69, Northwestern 54

Money line (ML)

PASS. The Badgers (-715) will continue their recent dominance over the Wildcats, but risking more than 7 times your profit is not smart sports betting.

Against the spread (ATS)

Back WISCONSIN -11.5 (+100). During Northwestern’s current 5-game skid, it has lost by an average of 18.4 PPG, dropping each game by at least 10 points.

The Badgers have been holding opponents to 62.1 PPG, including 66.0 PPG in conference play. Until the Wildcats show they can hang with anyone, the play is betting against them

ATS: Northwestern 5-6 | Wisconsin 6-7-1

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 135.5 (-105) is the play. The last nine games in this series have finished no higher than 135 points.

O/U records: Northwestern 7-4 | Wisconsin 8-6
