Indiana at Northwestern picks and predictions

Prediction

Northwestern 67, Indiana 63

Moneyline

BET NORTHWESTERN +125.

Northwestern is coming off a massive win against No. 1 ranked Purdue Sunday and is making a solid case for why it belongs in the top 25. It has played its best basketball on its home court with an 11-4 home record while Indiana has struggled on the road this season with just a 4-5 road record.

While this game will be a close battle, the Wildcats will be riding the momentum of their recent victories and home crowd to propel them to victory.

Against the spread

PASS.

While the Wildcats would cover the spread with a victory, there is more money to be played on the moneyline.

If you are not as confident in a Northwestern victory, the spread is worth a play. It is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games overall and 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games following an outright victory. The underdog is also 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these programs.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 134.5 (-115).

The Under is 4-0 in the Hoosiers’ last 4 games following a ATS win, 3-0-1 in their last 5 road games and 4-1 in their last 5 games following a straight-up win. The Under is also 4-2 in their last 6 games.

For Northwestern, the Under is 4-0 in its last 5 games, and the Under is 16-6 in its last 22 home games.

Expect Northwestern to try and control the possession, which will put points at a premium.

Indiana at Northwestern: Three things to know

  1. Northwestern won at Indiana 74-67 as a 9-point underdog in late December. Wildcats G Chase Audige scored all 17 of his team-high points in the second half. The sophomore accounted for the Wildcats’ final 11 points as they pulled away from a 63-61 lead in the final 3:01.
  2. Indiana is coming off a 67-65 upset of then-No. 8 Iowa Sunday as a 3.5-point home underdog to complete a season sweep of the Hawkeyes. IU won 81-69 as a 10-point dog in Iowa City when Iowa was ranked No. 4. Sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis leads the Hoosiers in scoring (19.9 points per game), rebounds (9.2 RPG) and blocks (1.8 BPG).
  3. It’s hard to believe Northwestern opened the Big Ten season 3-0 – beating Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State – since the Wildcats have since lost 9 in a row. Their most recent defeat was a 75-70 setback at Purdue Saturday, but they covered the spread as 8-point underdogs. Junior F Miller Kopp leads three Wildcats in double-figures, averaging 13.2 PPG.

Against the spread (ATS)

Place your bet(s) on NORTHWESTERN +4.5 (-115). Indiana is a “Jekyll and Hyde” type of team. The Hoosiers look good in an early January win against Nebraska but followed with an awful performance in a home loss to unranked Purdue. After their first upset of Iowa, they lost to Rutgers.

Until the Hoosiers prove they can play well in back-to-back games, it’s not wise to bet on them.

ATS: Indiana 11-7 | Northwestern 7-8

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 138.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Excluding Jackson-Davis, Indiana’s starters are terrible shooters. Before junior G Rob Phinisee’s 3-pointer at the 1:39 mark and sophomore G Armaan Franklin’s game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left Sunday vs. Iowa, IU’s three starting guards were a combined 2-for-24.

At 44.2%, Franklin is the only starting guard shooting above 40% from the field.

Meanwhile, Northwestern has averaged 66.0 PPG during its 9-game losing streak.

O/U records: Indiana 9-9 | Northwestern 9-6
