Micah Shrewsberry: Notre Dame showed ‘immaturity’ vs. North Dakota

Was he in the right to say these things?

Although Notre Dame barely trailed while beating North Dakota by 17, the game’s direction wasn’t made clear until early in the second half. Before that, the Irish let the Hawks hang around, and [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] didn’t hide his disappointment for that in his postgame news conference.

Shrewsberry said in his opening statement that the maturity the Irish displayed in their blowout win over Georgetown was replaced with “a lot of immaturity” against the Hawks.

Shrewsberry called out his team’s preparation and expressed dissatisfaction for their rebounding. Indeed, the Hawks won the offensive rebounding battle, 14-7, and ultimately outrebounded the Irish, 38-36. Six of the Hawks’ offensive rebounds came from Eli King.

In the Irish’s defense, they had little preparation time ahead of this game between traveling, a day off and classes earlier in the day. But Shrewsberry said such circumstances “can’t be an excuse” in college basketball. He promised a better showing for Friday’s game against Elon.

You can view Shrewsberry’s news conference in full here starting at 8:01 after words from [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] and [autotag]Julian Roper II[/autotag], two of the stars in this game:

Here’s hoping Shrewsberry won’t have to say these things after a win again.

Notre Dame men’s basketball cruises over North Dakota to move to 4-0

Let’s keep this perfection train going.

The Notre Dame men’s basketball is as off to as good a start as it could have asked for. North Dakota put up a little more of a fight than Georgetown did in the Irish’s previous game, but it was not nearly enough. The Irish remain unblemished in this young season after a 75-58 victory.

While the Irish (4-0) led almost the entire game, the Hawks (2-2) hung around during the first half and were within five points early in the second. But that’s when the Irish took complete control via a 14-3 run and didn’t lead by less than 13 the rest of the way. Big baskets and timely defense were the main determining factors during that second half.

[autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] came within a basket of his career scoring high with 29 points, but he made a career-high 13 field goals. He also was one rebound short of a double-double and had a team-high three assists.

At 12 points, [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag] was the only other Irish player to score in double figures. [autotag]Julian Roper II[/autotag] set a career high with five steals.

Notre Dame to play North Dakota for first time in over 80 years

Mark Nov. 19 on your calendars.

We slowly but surely are starting to see the college basketball schedule leak out. We haven’t seen much for Notre Dame except for a tournament in Las Vegas. However, we now know the Irish will be playing a program it hasn’t faced since the year the U.S. entered World War II.

The Grand Forks Herald is reporting that the Irish will welcome North Dakota to Purcell Pavilion on Nov. 19. To find the only other meeting between the teams, you have to go back to Feb. 4, 1941. The Irish won that game, 46-38, at the long-demolished Notre Dame Fieldhouse.

North Dakota athletic director Bill Chaves indicated his appreciation for the Irish and their history:

“I think back to my childhood when Notre Dame was playing UCLA. UCLA had all those amazing teams. (The Fighting Irish) were the ones to break up the 88-game winning streak. It’s kind of a neat thing for history buffs, and certainly it’ll be exciting for this year’s team.”

The Fighting Hawks are coming off an 18-14 season in which they placed second in the Summit League. When the Irish last played a team from that conference in December 2013, they lost, 73-69, to North Dakota State, which went on to upset a ranked Oklahoma team in that season’s NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State football lands transfer QB Tommy Schuster from North Dakota

Michigan State football lands transfer QB Tommy Schuster from North Dakota

Michigan State football already knows who their starter is going to be next year in elite transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles, who followed Jonathan Smith to East Lansing. Now, we also know who will be the backup for the Spartans, and it’s an elite option for that role.

On Sunday, North Dakota grad transfer quarterback Tommy Schuster committed to the Spartans.

Schuster, who is from Clinton Township in Michigan, threw for 2,238 yards and 19 touchdowns while throwing for just five interceptions last year. He put up even more impressive stats in 2022, when he threw for 2,728 yards and 20 touchdowns with the same amount of interceptions.

Nebraska vs North Dakota Game Preview

Why North Dakota Will Win

The Fighting Hawks should be able to keep things moving.

The offensive line is good enough to pound away a bit – maybe not like Northwestern did last week against the Huskers in Dublin, but enough to get the ground game going – and QB Tommy Schuster is careful with the ball.

He can hit the short, midrange throws, he’ll get time to throw, and the team has a way of controlling the clock and keeping things moving.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Nebraska Will Win

You think Nebraska is going to be just a weeeeeee bit fired up to get back on the field?

There were a whole slew of things that went wrong in the meltdown loss to Northwestern, but Casey Thompson threw for 355 yards and was solid in the first half, there was a little bit of a ground game when the offense tried, and even after giving up 528 yards of total offense, the defense actually held up more than it got credit for.

North Dakota won’t be able to grind it out like Northwestern did, the team should come out with a renewed energy, and …

What’s Going To Happen

How much does it matter that Nebraska is coming off that long, rough trip to Ireland? This is supposed to be the breather of a week – Northwestern is taking it off – but North Dakota is just physical enough overall and strong enough defensively to make the base grouchy.

The Nebraska passing game will kick in after the first quarter, but it’s not going to be as smooth as everyone might like, at least for a little while.

These nine states have never hosted a PGA Tour event

There are still nine states that are still hoping their day in the sun is still to come.

This week the PGA Tour visits the First State for the time.

Wilmington Country Club will play host, marking the PGA Tour’s first-ever event in the state of Delaware and the 10th different venue to host the BMW Championship since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007.

“You’ve got to hit it as far as you can and hit a lot of fairways,” advised BMW defending champion and reigning FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay.

Delaware becomes the 41st state in the union to host a Tour event, but that means there are still nine states that are still hoping their day in the sun is still to come.

Maine is one of the nine remaining states that have never hosted a Tour event. Professional golf has been absent from northeast New England, five states within the Mountain Time Zone and Alaska. Some states barely avoided making the list. Nebraska was spared solely by the 1933 Nebraska Open, Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene hosted the 1992 Merrill Lynch Shootout and Arkansas made headlines with the Arlington Hotel Open from 1955-63.

Some of these states have hosted Nationwide, Champions and LPGA events, but the locals are waiting patiently for Rory, Tiger and Jordan to grace them with their presence.

Here’s a list of some of the golf courses that could potentially host the stars of the PGA Tour someday. (Special thanks to longtime Golfweek reader and journalist Peter Kollmann, who helped with the research.)

Watch: Highlights from Notre Dame’s thrilling OT win

March Madness – on the ice

Notre Dame hockey is moving onto the East Regional Final after a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against North Dakota on Thursday night.  The win sends the Fighting Irish to their seventh Regional Final in program history with a chance to end up in the Frozen Four for the fifth time.

Landon and Graham Slaggert both played huge roles as they combined to score both Notre Dame goals in the contest as well as rack up an assist.  Now awaiting Notre Dame is a date with the top seed in the region, Minnesota State, on Saturday.

See highlights from the thrilling 2-1 victory below.

Notre Dame wins overtime thriller and advances to Regional Final

One win away from the Frozen Four after a thriller!

Notre Dame hockey is now just one win away from earning a trip to the Frozen Four after a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over North Dakota on Thursday night.

The Fighting Hawks struck first with roughly 1:30 remaining in the first period as freshman Brent Johnson netted just his second goal of the season give the game its first tally.  It would be the final goal scored by North Dakota during the 2021-22 season, however.

Landon Slaggert then took advantage of a North Dakota turnover early in the second as he used his backhand on a breakaway to knot the game at one, with an assist from his brother and captain, Graham.  More on him shortly.

The third period saw both Notre Dame and North Dakota get special teams chances with none greater than the Fighting Hawks getting a penalty shot attempt by Riese Gaber but he missed the net.  Matthew Galajda was great in net on the night, stopping 23 of 24 shots he faced.

In the extra frame Notre Dame had a few shots early before Graham Slaggert scored on a power play snipe just 98 seconds into the extra frame to send the Fighting Irish to the East Regional Final where they’ll meet top-seeded Minnesota State.

This is Notre Dame’s seventh trip to a Regional Final all-time as they’re seeking their fifth appearance in the Frozen Four.

Minnesota Duluth reached the Frozen Four with an epic win in the fifth overtime

Six hours of hockey.

We’re not talking Cawlidge Hawkey here. None of that grating Northeast accent in this post.

This is Midwest hockey and …. well, I don’t know how to write out a Minnesota accent. I think it’s like, “Oh, dontcha know there was a good game the other night and also here is a lovingly crafted pie I just baked.”

But this was a very good game, one that took more than six hours (or 142.13 of playing time) to complete. In the end, the two-time defending champion Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs won the longest game in NCAA Tournament history 3-2 in the fifth overtime to return to the men’s Frozen Four:

Slow motion, better angle:

That’s freshman Luke Mylymok, who appeared in all of 11 games this year, scoring off the rush on the 119th shot of the game. (I hereby decree that all Fifth OT goals scored in hockey, anywhere and everywhere, are now and forever known as “Mylymoks.”)

Mylymok hadn’t played a game in exactly a month, so maybe he had really fresh legs?

No. 1 seed North Dakota had tied this game by scoring two goals in the final two minutes after pulling its goalie.

Hilariously, the highlight package for this game stretches *16 minutes.*

Fighting Hawks coach Brad Berry had a wonderful way of putting the game into perspective after the crushing loss. From the Grand Forks Herald:

“It will probably go down as one of the most memorable games, even though we lost the game in overtime,” UND coach Brad Berry said. “That’s what sports is. I told the guys after the game, ‘This is life. This is what life is. It’s not fair.’ At the end of the day, we could have argued all day who should have won the game. . . we felt we had a very good opportunity. We had a ton of opportunities to win the game. We felt it wasn’t fair that we didn’t win the game. But again, that’s what sports is, that’s what life is. You keep moving on.”

Well said.
