Nets waive Andre Roberson, Iman Shumpert and Noah Vonleh, expected to sign Tyler Cook

Sean Marks is messing around with the Brooklyn Nets roster once again, making quick decisions on some veterans.

Tuesday’s game against the Sacramento Kings was the first contest Iman Shumpert was available to play since signing with the Brooklyn Nets. He scored two points over six minutes in his return from a hamstring injury. And just like that, the guard has been waived by the Nets again; same goes for Andre Roberson and Noah Vonleh.

However, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Shumpert and Roberson are expected to rejoin the Nets once they clear waivers. The Nets are looking to sign the pair to 10-day deals to help the team maintain flexibility ahead of the guarantee deadline for contracts this week.

Neither Shumpert, Roberson nor Vonleh had been with the team for a month prior to the move after Tuesday’s win at Barclays Center. Shumpert rejoined the Nets on Jan. 30, Vonleh inked a deal on Feb. 8 and Roberson signed with Brooklyn on Feb. 16.

The Nets are also expected to sign Tyler Cook to a 10-day contract, per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski. The forward has not played in an NBA game this season, appearing in 13 games last season and logging very limited minutes (4.2 per game).

Kyrie Irving probable Tuesday vs. Pistons; Noah Vonleh not on status report

James Harden should have some reinforcements on Tuesday when the Brooklyn Nets visit the Detroit Pistons.

After sitting out Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers — which the Nets lost 124-108 — Kyrie Irving is likely to be available for Brooklyn’s trip to Detroit on Tuesday. The guard had been dealing with a right index finger sprain that Steve Nash previously said was a day-to-day injury. On Monday, the Nets announced Irving is probable to play.

Also featured on Brooklyn’s status report were Kevin Durant (health and safety protocols), Nicolas Claxton (right knee tendinopathy), Spencer Dinwiddie and Reggie Perry (G League) — all of which are unavailable for Tuesday’s game. Iman Shumpert also remains unavailable due to a left hamstring strain.

Not featured on Brooklyn’s status report for the Nets’ meeting with the Pistons is newly acquired Noah Vonleh, who Brooklyn officially signed to a deal on Monday. Like Shumpert and Norvel Pelle (before Saturday’s game), Vonleh has not appeared in an NBA game yet this season.

Report: Noah Vonleh expected to sign with Nets

The Brooklyn Nets continue to add depth at the big man position with Jarrett Allen gone.

Norvel Pelle may provide the Brooklyn Nets with some depth down low on the defensive end, but adding him was clearly not enough to make up for the void left by Jarrett Allen after he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the James Harden deal. While Pelle can help, Allen is one of the better rim protectors in the NBA at only 22 years old. So, Brooklyn needed to look for another big man to share minutes at center with DeAndre Jordan and Jeff Green.

Enter Noah Vonleh. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 6-foot-10 big man is expected to ink a deal with the Nets. A six-year NBA veteran, Vonleh has spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets and Denver Nuggets.

Like Pelle and Iman Shumpert, who also recently re-signed with the Nets, Vonleh has not played in an NBA game yet this season — it will likely take some time before the big man to log minutes for Brooklyn.

While he isn’t a shot-blocker like Pelle, Vonleh is able to guard multiple positions. He’s also a strong rebounder, grabbing 5.2 per game throughout his career despite only averaging 16.9 minutes a night.
