OKC Blue: Andre Roberson signed onto G League roster

Dre is back.

The G League’s OKC Blue surprisingly announced it had added Andre Roberson to their roster on Wednesday.

Roberson has been practicing with the Blue for the past month, but there were no serious indications of a potential comeback attempt.

Who knows how far this goes, but it’s good to see Roberson attempt a comeback to professional basketball. The local reaction to the news was very positive as Roberson is beloved by Thunder fans.

Roberson, who last played in NBA game in 2021 withe Brooklyn Nets, spent the first six seasons of his career with the Thunder (2013-2020). A ruptured left patellar tendon in January 2018 essentially ended his NBA career to this point.

Roberson was known as one of the best perimeter defenders of his era, despite a limited offensive ceiling due to being a non-outside shooting threat.

After Gobert’s Game 6, Andre Roberson says guards deserve more DPOY consideration

After Rudy Gobert struggled to defend the Clippers in Game 6, former Thunder defensive stalwart Andre Roberson gave his take on the DPOY award.

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert won his third Defensive Player of the Year award this season, but in Game 6 of the second-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers, he looked like a liability on that side of the ball.

When Clippers shooters received passes outside the 3-point arc, Gobert hesitated to close out and leave the lane open. That’s not a formula that works against Los Angeles, a team that shot a league-best 41% from 3.

With Gobert’s inability to get to the perimeter, the Clippers made 14 3-pointers in the second half to erase a 25-point deficit and end the series with a 131-119 win. According to ESPN, Los Angeles shot 12-for-15 when Gobert was the primary defender.

This prompted former Oklahoma City Thunder wing Andre Roberson to give his take on the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Roberson made his career by being a lockdown defender. Despite lacking solid offensive abilities, Roberson was essential to the team in the Russell Westbrook days. His impact was clear both by watching him play and by seeing the defense collapse when he got injured.

After Game 6, Roberson tweeted that guards should receive stronger consideration for DPOY.

“It’s about time we start looking at more guards for DPOY,” he tweeted.

A guard has not won the award since Gary Payton in 1996. The award was almost exclusively given to centers until Kawhi Leonard won it back-to-back in 2015 and 2016. Draymond Green, who plays forward and center, won in 2017, and forward Giannis Antetokounmpo won in 2020.

Voters have shown a clear willingness to go with forwards over the past decade, but there has been lack of appreciation toward guards.

Over the past five years, Ben Simmons (2020, 2021), Paul George (2018, 2019) and Andre Roberson (2017) are the only guards to finish in the top-five of voting.

If there is a guard fit to file this type of complaint, it’s Roberson, who has made his career on the defensive end of the court.

Nets waive Andre Roberson, Iman Shumpert and Noah Vonleh, expected to sign Tyler Cook

Sean Marks is messing around with the Brooklyn Nets roster once again, making quick decisions on some veterans.

Tuesday’s game against the Sacramento Kings was the first contest Iman Shumpert was available to play since signing with the Brooklyn Nets. He scored two points over six minutes in his return from a hamstring injury. And just like that, the guard has been waived by the Nets again; same goes for Andre Roberson and Noah Vonleh.

However, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Shumpert and Roberson are expected to rejoin the Nets once they clear waivers. The Nets are looking to sign the pair to 10-day deals to help the team maintain flexibility ahead of the guarantee deadline for contracts this week.

Neither Shumpert, Roberson nor Vonleh had been with the team for a month prior to the move after Tuesday’s win at Barclays Center. Shumpert rejoined the Nets on Jan. 30, Vonleh inked a deal on Feb. 8 and Roberson signed with Brooklyn on Feb. 16.

The Nets are also expected to sign Tyler Cook to a 10-day contract, per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski. The forward has not played in an NBA game this season, appearing in 13 games last season and logging very limited minutes (4.2 per game).

Thunder fans react to Andre Roberson joining former OKC players in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Nets signed Andre Roberson, and Thunder fans quickly noticed just how many former OKC players the Nets are gathering.

After years of being a fan-favorite, Andre Roberson’s departure from the Oklahoma City Thunder was a bit muted. An injury sapped almost his entire final two seasons, and when he did return, fans weren’t able to watch him in person, as it was during the NBA bubble. Roberson’s contract expired that offseason and the team did not re-sign him.

He left without fanfare, and two months into the NBA season, he remained a free agent. The Brooklyn Nets, in need of defensive help, finally snagged the former All-NBA defender, Shams Charania reported Friday night.

Thunder fans reacted with happiness to Roberson getting another chance in the league, but this wan’t the only reaction.

They quickly noticed just how many former Thunder players the Nets have on their roster.

Beyond the jokes, Thunder fans are thrilled Roberson is getting another chance.

There was also general appreciation for his defensive acumen.

Roberson isn’t ensured anything. HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported that it’s a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, and Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith described it as “essentially a one-week tryout.”

But it’s a chance, and Roberson has found a team willing to give him a chance to earn a role.

Thunder fans can rejoice for that.
